Motorbike racetrack training in winter

Winter training in southern Europe
Race track instead of snow shovel

While we turn up the heating, hobby pilots in southern Europe heat over the warm asphalt – keyword winter training. You too can turn from an ice scraper to a winter racer:

Do you always fall into this big black hole at the end of the season? Frustration shopping at Louis (ten pairs of knee sliders in different colors), television in the leather suit and the sad look into the garage every hour? Then give yourself a race training session in the sunny south – and make your dream of the endless motorcycle season come true.

Racetracks

Winter training is offered on almost all racetracks in southern Europe. Including MotoGP courses such as Valencia, Barcelona or Mugello. But also mountainous natural race tracks like Castelloli, which offer a lower level of safety, but are at the forefront of the hobby drivers in terms of driving pleasure. On pages 70–71 you will find an overview of the winter race tracks in southern Europe with all current driving dates.

weather

In winter, temperatures on the other side of the Alps rise to 15 to 20 degrees. Michael Dangrieb from Bike Promotion knows that good driving conditions always require a bit of luck: “Two years ago there was a storm in Almeria in February, so one day nothing worked.” In the following year, the contrasting program. “All participants sat around in swimming trunks at 28 degrees in the shade.” In general, it can be cooler on the racetracks located to the north such as Aragon or Calafat. In the more southerly like Jerez and Portimao it tends to be warmer, but more prone to rain.

Motorcycle transportation

Private motorcycle transport can pay off on racetracks like Mugello or Ledenon – they are only 700 kilometers from the German border. If you are aiming for more exotic destinations like Cartagena (1700 km), you should pay attention to the tolls in France and Spain. A Sprinter bus with a trailer costs a toll of 400 to 700 euros there and back alone.

Many organizers therefore transport the motorcycle, including the driver’s equipment, tires and accessories, directly to the racetrack on request. Those who ride more often can store their bikes with the organizer over the winter and have them transported from route to route. Rent a motorcycle is completely stress-free.

Insurance

For racing training abroad, the so-called “European health insurance card” is mandatory. It ensures that the person concerned does not have to pay the doctor’s bill on site. Inexpensive (approx. 10 euros / year) and recommended is an additional international travel health insurance that covers the return transport to Germany and any additional costs incurred by private doctors. Accident insurance is also advisable; it compensates for permanent physical damage.

Matching tires

Experience has shown that medium-sized tire compounds work best at temperatures between 15 and 20 degrees. The tires should be preheated, however, because the flanks can otherwise tear due to the low asphalt temperatures. The same thing happens when tires get frost, says David Fuchs from Speer Racing: “We often have the problem that new tires are destroyed after two turns despite tire warmers and a suitable suspension setting.” The expert advises: “Transport the motorcycle on old tires and the pack a new one in a warm car. “

Driving program

Around 100 participants take part in each event, only half compared to race training in summer. That means a lot of driving time with little traffic. Michael Dangrieb from Bike Promotion: “There is a holiday mood, people don’t have to exhaust every second of their driving time.” The lack of volume limitation in Spain also has a relaxing effect (caution: 98 db in France and Italy). Some organizers also offer enduro trips, trips to the sea or strolls through the city. Highly recommended, because before May there is hardly any tourism in the southern corners of Europe – and after that the German racing asphalt lures again.
