Second-hand Uncle Beyl: Other manufacturers also have enduro bikes of this displacement class. But they are either older (Honda XL 350, Yamaha XT 350), heavier (Cagiva W12), more expensive (KTM Freeride 350, Beta Alp 4.0) or too extreme for everyday use. The DR actually offers the best package. So it is important to be patient and quick!

Looking for used motorcycle bargains all over Germany
Four men, four tasks

Woe to you when you let go: The MOTORRAD experts for treasures from second to seventh hand not only constantly scour the virtual used motorcycle offer, they also leave their editorial cages every now and then to view the full second-hand happenings live and on site. This time even with clear work assignments.

Representative surveys in the MOTORRAD editorial team have shown that 78.6 percent of all colleagues have saved at least one of the relevant used vehicle sales portals under their Internet favorites. Four of the said colleagues even surf the Internet with difficulty on business and thus officially during working hours to see what the market has to offer. Preferably, of course, bargains.

This story is about them. Not just any, but previously clearly defined: four men, four tasks! And they pretty much correspond to your own preferences, which gave the whole thing an additional charm – personal concern is always good in revelation stories. The four used uncles gave each other a week as a time window, from searching for and finding two potential candidates on the Internet to contacting the sellers and on-site inspection appointments – regardless of where in Germany.

Province can be really worthwhile

And so the tours led from northern Schleswig-Holstein to southern Bavaria, from the bulging Pott in the west to the east to the picturesque New Five Lands. First realization of the bargain tour: the provinces can be really worthwhile; because in addition to the “sellers a little further afield” presented here (for example in Husum or Sangerhausen), many providers who were stuck in the preselection also showed that metropolitan areas have the highest motorcycle density, but not always the best bargain deals. Second insight: buying countercyclical is clever.

When full beards wearing checked shirts plunder the BMW two-valve market for the purpose of a retro bike project, older four-valve boxers have a harder time – and are therefore potential special offers. Which, by the way, also applies to long-forgotten (Suzuki GSX 1100 F) or largely unknown (Harley-Davidson MT 350 E) treasures. Third, not really surprising finding: bargain offers on popular machines require a pronounced basic speed – as the young colleague Beyl had to painfully discover. Otherwise the following applies: If you heed the pre-owned bids below, despite all the hunting fever, you are very likely to buy correctly. In this sense: Waidmannsheil!

Tips for buying used

archive

This should be taken into account when buying a used bike.

1. Don’t get stuck on a particular model, color, or year of manufacture. This only puts you under unnecessary pressure and the offer is too limited. Inquire about possible alternatives at an early stage.

2. Never go to the viewing appointment alone.

3. Plan enough time. To be fair, cancel appointments that you cannot or cannot keep.

4th. Stay away from machines that have not even done the simplest maintenance work (oil level, chain tension, etc.). Take particular care when the engine is warm.

5. Don’t let the seller put you under pressure (“I still have several interested parties”). Hardly any offer is unique.

6th. Basically take a test drive or have it done by a knowledgeable acquaintance.

7th. Do not rely on loose promises (“TuV / registration no problem”). If it’s that simple, the seller could have done it himself. In principle, there is only money when all promises have been fulfilled.

8th. Listen not only to your head, but also to your stomach. You like a motorcycle straight away – or you never like it.

9. Always carry cash on your body, do not leave it in a jacket or backpack.

10. Always make a written sales contract. Record all warranted properties in writing.

BMW R 1100 S for less than 5000 euros

Motorcycle bargains in Germany

Jorg Lohse

Second-hand Uncle Lohse: Like the two-valve engines, the air-cooled 4V boxers will mature into cult objects. My investment tip: sports boxers in their original condition, with few kilometers and with a checkbook. Lovers – and those who want to become one – are shopping for very little money right now.

BMW drivers usually eat up kilometers. Normally this also applies to owners of the sports boxer R 1100 S. Used uncle Jorg Lohse, 46, has put the youngtimer on the wanted list in almost new condition. Is there really something going on – possibly even for less than five million? The solution: an authorized dealer or a lover who does not want to sell.

A well-hung BMW R 1100 S. with less than 20,000 kilometers? No problem! But under 10,000 km? Oh, that’s going to be more difficult. Mobile.de does not even list a handful of hits. The attractive offer for a 1999 model is available from a genuine BMW dealer for 4950 euros. Salesman Michael Heinzel, 29, laughs on the phone when I announce the visit of the MOTORRAD-used-uncle: “Then fix it. Tomorrow two interested parties want to come! ”So off to BMW Fritze in Sangerhausen (motto“ Mobile with style ”).

On the way there, I cross the finest motorcycle area with our long-term test R-1200-R: Thuringian Forest, Kyffhauser, southern Harz. How do you get 9052 kilometers in this great area in 17 years? Actually a scandal! A few kilometers later, the icing on the cake is illuminated by spotlights in the middle of the Fritze showroom. Metal and lacquer surfaces in top condition, deep black carbon shimmers, no faded plastic. The service booklet with two stamps: 1000 inspection one year after approval, 14 years later the 6000 service.

Bottrop, BMW R 1100 S, EZ 5/2000, 6778 km, 4900 euros: At Klaus, the sports boxer has been humming in third hand for two years.

After all, the last owner (third hand) drove around 3000 kilometers in the following two years before he fell in love with the new R 1200 R and left his sports boxer at Fritze. There is no risk of structural damage such as the notorious ABS pressure modulator with this BMW R 1100 S – because no ABS! But that is not a sales problem, according to Heinzel: “There is now a special clientele for the air-cooled sports boxer – they don’t care whether with or without ABS.” Not five mille, with a review and guarantee from a highly motivated BMW dealer? Actually, you should strike there. But wait, there’s another one in Bottrop. Built in 2000, for 4900 euros with an incredible 6800 km. So over to the pot. Klaus, 49, greets me right away with the words: “Actually, I don’t want to sell them …” Aha, the old salesman’s trick is to fix things and prevent prices from falling … Before we go to the machine, there is a delicious espresso and plenty of gasoline chat in the first place the kitchen. Klaus has been riding a motorcycle for 31 years.

Wild two-stroke times with poisonous ones Yamaha RD 250 and 350 LC, then after FJ 1100 and 1200 the switch to Bavarian products: BMW R 1100 S, air-cooled BMW R 1200 GS. And finally the S again: “A social case. I bought it from a work colleague. 14 years old, with 1153 km on the clock. She needed a run! ”In two years, Klaus will increase the annual mileage 34 times. Stand damage? “After 500 kilometers I had to replace a Simmerring in the gearbox because the oil leaked!” Of course, the trained car mechanic did it himself. Since then, the S has been purring like a kitten. We both look pensively at the sparkling clean part in front of the garage. The sun is laughing over Bottrop, I notice how Klaus’ fingers are itching. The quasi-neighbor of the multiple IDM champion Michael Schulten is an old sports fan and already has the tickets for Assen in his pocket. Of course you could go over to Holland with the BMW… I realize that he really doesn’t want to sell the S. So just keep going, Klaus!

Enduro for around 1500 euros

Motorcycle bargains in Germany

Beyl

Second-hand Uncle Beyl: Other manufacturers also have enduro bikes of this displacement class. But they are either older (Honda XL 350, Yamaha XT 350), heavier (Cagiva W12), more expensive (KTM Freeride 350, Beta Alp 4.0) or too extreme for everyday use. The best package actually offers the DR.

Over 300, under 900 and around 1500. Don’t you understand? It’s actually quite simple: Young used uncle Tobias Beyl, 28, is looking for an off-road motorcycle over 300 cubic meters, below 900 millimeters seat height and at a price of around 1500 euros. A cheap and everyday enduro at a student price. Further criteria: year of construction only from 1990, less than 150 kilos. The solution: Depending on your taste, the Suzuki or the Husky wins the race.

Germany. The whole nation is open to me, 16 federal states full of opportunities when it comes to suitable second-hand offers. And where do I go first? Stuttgart. It’s exactly 3.33 kilometers as the crow flies from my workplace in the city center to the private seller in the north district, but then I prefer to chase the MOTORRAD endurance tester GSX-S 1000 F over the 5.1 kilometers of asphalt. I’m in a hurry because 99 percent of the Husqvarna TE 410, which is offered for 1900 euros VB, has already been bought by someone else, according to owner Robin, 41.

One? When I found my way down the one-way street, four young men romp around the red and white enduro. Two of them are in the process of counting banknotes, namely salesman Robin and the visibly proud new owner Sebastian. The other two are his buddies and today only give advice and test driving. All together clearly belong to the genus “passionate dirt burrower”.

Beyl

Stuttgart, Husqvarna TE 410, EZ 5/1997, km k. A., 1900 euros: There was still enough time for a group picture with salesman Robin and the guys from Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

I actually do too, and so the guys from Garmisch-Partenkirchen offer me one of their numerous other enduros that they call their own at home as a consolation. Maybe they’ll bring one for me the next time they’re on their way to the Swabian capital in Grandpa’s van. For me, however, it is now time to go back to all the used markets on the worldwide web. The Suzuki DR 350 is a machine that cannot be ignored with my specifications. In MOTORRAD 10/2016 I was still talking about the used prices of its successor DR-Z 400. And what can one say: Even the little sister is now being traded more expensive than it was ten years ago. Useful offers range from 1500 euros (mainly the S version) to 2200 euros (SH and SE models).

Due to the better chassis and the hydraulic seat height adjustment, the SH version, which was only built from 1993, won the race, and I rushed to Darmstadt, where an offer from women for 1850 euros awaits me in Robdorf. Once there, however, I am first involved in a nice conversation by a resident, among other things, he raves about the passion with which the DR salespeople devote themselves to their bikes. I can convince myself of that afterwards, all four bikes in the garage are in first class, the 350 Suzi only has 14,000 kilometers on the clock. She collected them in Croatia, Sardinia and Spain while doing enduro hiking. The previous owner was the colleague’s sister-in-law, ten years ago the saleswoman Birgit bought it for 2200 euros. Technically everything still works perfectly, and today it changes hands for 1750 euros. The only catch: I’m not the buyer, I was too slow this time too.

Motorbike for a tour up to 1000 euros

Motorcycle bargains in Germany

Thorsten Dentges

Second-hand Uncle Dentges: If you can find a luggage system for little money, the Suzuki would be my first choice. Without hesitation I would roast with her as far as Gibraltar and much further. The Yamaha is actually the better tourer – with the steering head bearing made (approx. 200 euros) also a good option.

Off to the south, in the sun, to the sea – with pillion and luggage! Second-hand uncle Thorsten Dentges, 44, is looking for a touring bike with pressure and comfortable seats that beats the price of a week’s rental motorcycle. We are looking for a cheap travel steamer with some residual TuV approval and at least so much technical reliability that it will survive the holidays safely and safely. The solution: large-capacity in-line quad bikes with a lot of patina.

Renting a rental tourer costs at least 100 euros per day. Even if you only want to go on holiday for a week with passengers and luggage, the bills can quickly add up to well over 1000 euros, including additional costs. Then why not buy a cheap part as a kind of disposable or disposable moped and hope that it will make it through the tour? If not, the club card and breakdown service save you. After the trip, the motorcycle is sold to the highest bidder – a couple of hunnies are then returned. Top deal, right??

My search criteria: accident-free, TuV at least until autumn 2016, 78 hp upwards, 750 cubic meters lower limit, 1000 euros upper limit, so that there is still some financial scope for re-registration, new tires and spare parts. After all, there are over 100 offers in Bavaria alone, and I mark a good half dozen as worth visiting. Including a Yamaha FJ 1200 for 990 euros, dealer offer at Traunstein. The provider is something on the phone, well, monosyllabic, which is actually already flattered, and since I have not expressed any direct intention to buy, he does not even appear on site. But leaves the key in the FJ parked in front of a barn, so I can check the engine running.

Thorsten Dentges

Matzing: Yamaha FJ 1200, EZ 3/1991, 85,752 km, 990 euros: The Nikolaos car and motorcycle dealer is only selling the Tourer as a hobbyist’s vehicle without a guarantee, which was not stated in the advertisement.

The four-cylinder engine of the Yamaha FJ 1200 runs very smoothly after being swallowed for a short time. When the gas is blown, some oil vapor blows out of the silencers, and a weld seam on the pot is also minimally leaky. Some oil consumption would be normal for a 25 year old motorcycle. Brakes (steel flex) and suspension are good, overall the moped is in good shape. The biggest bonus is a complete case system and a fresh MOT when you buy it. And that despite the worn steering head bearing? No problem, assures the dealer, he takes care of it. Oh well. A bit strange, because the potential buyer should take care of the warehouse afterwards and at his own expense, and there would be no warranty at this price anyway. My gut feeling: queasy.

The next used car in Abtsgmund makes me feel more welcome. Hardly anyone has the Suzuki GSX 1100 F on their radar as a tourer. This slightly scratched specimen with an approved Remus exhaust is parked dry in the carpeted storage room of a well-tended family home. Private seller Stefan is the fourth owner. Number three in the vehicle registration document, born in 1961, drove the machine for 20 years with a downtime of two years and maintained it regularly. Technically, the GSX is great, the carburetor was cleaned last year. Engine sounds like new, runs super smooth; annoying mechanical noises: nonexistent. At the front, Stefan donated new fork springs from Wirth, but the rear suspension is lousy, so you would have to try again. Chain set, brakes, bearings: everything is perfect. It’s a shame that there are no suitcases.

Untampered Harley for less than 5000 euros

Motorcycle bargains in Germany

Klaus Herder

Used Uncle Herder: The best thing to do is to dismantle the whole range of accessories from the Sporty (the original parts are included!), Sell them separately and use the proceeds to pay for the MT 350 – the trend towards a second Harley is unbroken. If it’s just supposed to be one? Both have charm, but I would probably take the 350.

The decisive word is “not tinkered”; Because used uncle Klaus Herder, 53, is not looking for a shovelhead construction site from a ninth hand and without papers, but a complete machine that is immediately ready for use. The (smallest) Sportster inevitably end up in the focus, but the fact that there is also a Harley life beyond the Vau-Zwo glory comes as a surprise. The solution: entry-level sporty in full regalia or army veteran.

Seller’s blessings and buyers’ curse: The Harley value retention is just terrifyingly good. I put my make-up on the 1200 Sportster after the first phone calls with private sellers: construction sites, kits, clones, Schnackers and helpless people! I want something serious, preferably from the dealer, and there is almost no way around an 883. I discover a very special example at the Suzuki dealer in Raudzus in Husum, North Frisia. Trade-in? Nope, Raudzus motorcycle man and picture book North Frisian Johannes Matzen explains to me: Selling for reasons of age. A couple from the “Best Agers” league has given up the motorcycle hobby and now prefers to drive a mobile home. Contact with the Suzuki dealer was established through the Raudzus auto division.

Daddy’s Big Twin has already found a buyer; Muttis 883er has been waiting for a lover since November 2015 and was only a few days ago reduced in price below the magical 5000 euro threshold. Keyword lover: It should be one, because the equipment package, possibly owed to the old woman’s affliction “decoritis”, is already powerfully “individual”: chrome panels at every imaginable place, four (!) Leather tool containers, leather cup holders, leather tank covers and leather -Single seat in a particularly flat design. Luggage racks, forward footrests and a windshield with quick-release fasteners complete the equipment orgy, but they are also very practical. But the little Sportster was not only decorated, it was also driven, which you can clearly see from some of the aluminum parts. The bottom line is: traceable history, good condition, absolutely fair price.

Husum, Harley-D. Sportster 883, EZ 4/1997, 23 140 km, 4990 euros: Raudzus motorcycle man Johannes Matzen, 59, is fully behind the Sportster from second hand.

But it can be even more individual: Tim in Griesheim in Hesse has two children from two women and two motorbikes. For reasons of space, something has to be removed: The single-cylinder Army Harley should hit it, the 180 Army Hercules can stay – and of course the rest of the family too. Tim bought the 30 hp single in 2009 via VEBEG, a federal government-owned clutter collecting society. He would probably not have done that if he had known what running around and how much time it would take to lead an old soldier into civilian life.

Anyway, after six months of nervousness, the subject was over, and by the way, Zossen also received a technical rejuvenation treatment. Before the Harley keepers of the Grail complain: Of course, a 350 is not a “real” Harley in the sense of US Vauzwo heavy metal, but the MT 350, which was only built in around 1700 units up to the year 2000, was sold in the USA by real Americans assembled at a real Harley-Davidson factory. And that no longer applies to everything that has a name Harley-Davidson wearing. It’s a real Harley – albeit a really exotic one!
