The two-valve boxers of the line six and seven are omnipresent again. However, hardly in their original form, mostly as heavily screwed custom bikes. Often only the engine / transmission block including the drive train can actually be identified as the last original part. The rest is, well, mostly gone.

In the beginning it was only a small avant-garde remodel who discovered the pompous, baroque model series for themselves from the mid-1970s – only to throw on Flex with a diabolical grin. In the meantime, there is hardly an accessory supplier who has not designed a show bike based on the 2V boxer in order to promote add-on parts in a way that attracts publicity. Others, such as Wunderlich, are two steps further and offer sophisticated modular solutions. The custom bike powered by me, myself and I – this is how classic garage tuning works for everyone.
This is of course a fundamental difference to bikes like the Cafemoto 006. We present the fine eye-catcher by designer Georg Godde in detail starting on page 28 of this issue. But with each renovation, another Munich original disappears. The trend will subside – no question about it. But how many untouched originals are there then? Shouldn’t we already have to lock up some R 80 ST or R 100 RT in the shed before it hums to the shisha bar on coarse pebbles, with a drop tank and LED Firelefanz? Or should we just proudly acknowledge that Grandpa Olle provides the decisive impetus for the fascination of motorcycling for the young and wild ones?
