Sporty two-piece in the test

True sports drivers can’t get the racetrack out of their heads even on country road tours: look for the best line, fine-tune curve radii, set braking points cleverly. For enjoyable training without lap time pressure, the suit should also fit: made of leather, of course! Nine station wagons in comparison.

A leather suit usually fits like a shoe, so nothing should slip. So much in advance: The protectors of all nine two-piece leather suits in the test fit well, the leather is of perfect quality, and the seams are solid. Sports driver training on the racetrack? No problem. When it comes to safety, there is hardly anything to complain about, in this criterion they probably beat all textile suits in the same price range.

MOTORRAD verdict: Good

Convenience, practicality, pricing

For drivers who enjoy relaxed sports on country roads, it is not only the protective effect that counts. Comfort and practical features such as pockets, cell phone pockets or thermal linings play a major role on tour and in everyday life. And you will appreciate an easy-to-use connection zipper when you take a break in summer at the latest, when you want to get rid of the jacket quickly due to the heat. Incidentally, it is always a divine image when wearers of a one-piece have to contort themselves like gymnasts during a coffee break in order to “free themselves” around the top. This is much more elegant with a two-part sport touring leather.

In addition, two-piece suits are often conceptually tailored to touring riders anyway, recognizable by a fit that is not so pre-formed for a stooped racing posture. The sportier representatives of the genre, such as the Dainese or Held station wagon, should not be held up to a certain degree of radicalism if the pendulum swings more towards “Race” than towards “Tour”. Type thing.

But what exactly are the 500 to 1,000 euros per station wagon presented here invested for? First of all, there is the quality of the leather. Gone are the days when decent, patchwork-style cowhide was mixed with thin, cheap pieces of questionable quality. The test candidates measured leather thicknesses of at least one millimeter in almost all places, and doubling up to over four millimeters at fall zones. That’s strong.

For the Comfort Another decisive factor are well-placed stretch inserts (mostly polyamide fabric), which are ideally supported by heat-resistant aramid fibers (Kevlar). Additional guards and grinders on the outer material sometimes only serve as decoration, but when made clean and solid, such features rightly drive up the price. Large-area CE protectors on shoulders, elbows and knees that surround the joints well are compulsory, hip protectors are desirable, and chest protectors are a free choice. Retrofitting options are good form.

Special topic back protector: Some sports riders only use strap-on protectors that fit perfectly close to the body, so pre-installed, integrated back protectors do not always make sense.

And a not entirely unimportant part of the Pricing play marketing costs. Does a MotoGP rider drive for the brand? Well, and who will pay at least part of the sponsorship? “I don’t care as a customer!” Might say motorsport fans who emulate their idols on their machines. You are welcome, but as already said: Please try out the fall protection of your own station wagon on the racetrack!

This is how MOTORRAD tests

Various test drivers searched the two-piece for bulges, pinching, pressure and chafing areas. And at the same time checked the protector seat, freedom of movement in extreme driving postures and air conditioning at country road speeds. In addition, materials, construction, workmanship, leather thickness and quality were evaluated. Finally, the protectors were put under the hammer during a shock absorption test in the home laboratory.
