Two tours in the German-Polish border area

With a motorcyclist from Gorlitz to Saxon Switzerland, with a colleague from Zgorzelec in the direction of the Giant Mountains – local history on the left and right of the Neisse, which has divided the Silesian “European city” Gorlitz / Zgorzelec into a German and a Polish part since 1945.

Out and about in Germany

As a little boy, Falko, born in 1961, always dashed to the garden fence when a four-stroke motorcycle thundered past on the B 6 between Gorlitz and Bautzen and spontaneously “Have-want-dreams” woke up. The rangangang of the local MZs and Jawas couldn’t stink against such a sound. The wheel of history has continued to turn, today Falko is driving one Ducati ST4S. On the he accompanies me for two days through his favorite “Hunting areas” Upper Lusatia and Saxon Switzerland, prepared with GPS and road book – no wonder, because as a member of the MC Gorlitz e. V. knows Falko: “Moving motorcycles only on federal highways is actually almost an abuse.”

One of the many sights in Gorlitz is the “thick tower”.

Gorlitz proudly presents itself on the Internet as “Most beautiful city in Germany” with a picturesque old town, with almost 4,000 individual monuments from 500 years of building history, most of which have been extensively renovated, make it a unique travel destination. Even if all of this did not help in the election for the 2010 Capital of Culture against the competitor Essen: The center of Gorlitz is a jewel case.

So first out of the city, not too cocky tugging on the gas on the heavily laid Blaukopfstein and in the network of tram tracks. Perhaps also a wistful look at the remains of the Gorlitz VEB capacitor factory, whose decline began when, according to Falko, “The world market reached us at that time and it turned out that GDR capacitors were not suitable for the world market”.

The Landeskrone, the 420 meter high local mountain of Gorlitz, does not need to fear competition. The extinct volcano juts out of the plain, visible from afar, and with a little luck even gives strangers a free hotel room with a panoramic view. The historic Hohnsteinring race track in Saxon Switzerland dates from the time when swimmer chambers were flooded and leather hoods were worn. Hillclimb races were held here from 1926 to 1933, and in 1939 the course was built for “Deutschlandring” off, the last official race took place in 1951. The approximately ten kilometer long circuit leads over public roads. Today, parts of the winding track are unfortunately closed to motorbikes at the weekend. In the district of Hohburkersdorf, the inn is reminiscent “Stop at the racetrack” to glorious times – and served hungry heroes when needed “stains”, cow’s stomach cut into strips.

The Bastei, a bizarre labyrinth of gorges whose 200-meter-high rocky ridges offer phenomenal views, is not only suitable for a digestive walk. Even if the absence of people is not one of the primary features of Saxon Switzerland and, due to the topography, which is often reminiscent of Monument Valley with its striking rock formations, there is naturally a lack of alternative routes: there is an opportunity to give the thundering Bella Donna from Bologna the spurs still again and again. From Cunnersdorf to Konigstein, for example, a narrow road leads through the forest, which the Duc does so well that we skip the visit to the mighty Konigstein Fortress and start straight away to the Kirnitzschtal near Bad Schandau.

There it says: Please do not drive against the tram! As an overland railway, this divides the roadway with the remaining traffic to the Lichtenhain waterfall. So don’t just pay attention to the rocks and ferns of the delightful Kirnitzschtal.

Representative for all the other destinations in the region, which unfortunately come under the wheels here due to the space, the cast iron tower and the tower restaurant on the Lobauer Berg as well as the imposing Krobnitz Castle should be mentioned; not to forget the Zittau Mountains. We conclude the first part of the tour in the old town of Gorlitz, where the tavern “To the night smith” Welcomes night owls (and those forging new plans).

The old Polish WFM is still in use.

Who can still remember when the bridge connecting Gorlitz and Zgorzelec over the border river Neisse was a single bottleneck, guaranteeing traffic jams and annoying handling procedures? It’s gone like a ghost, you’re in Poland in no time at all. I have an appointment with Adam in Zgorzelec for the second part of the tour. A few weeks earlier, this excursion – at that time accompanied by the friendly Poles Darius, Jurek and Henrik (thank you again), only led to the pump room of the Świeradów Zdrój spa and then had to be broken off due to torrential rain.

Adam’s first motorized two-wheeler, born in 1966, was a Polish 1950s moped. The auto mechanic and used car dealer is now a fan of power cruisers and drives Kawasaki Vulcan 2000. To get in the mood, a lap of honor around the Hall of Fame inaugurated by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1902 – and we have already checked off the sights of Zgorzelec, which until 1945 was the unadorned suburb of its better half west of the Neisse. Zgorzelec is now pulsating with younger life than in Gorlitz.

After a long evening with Adam, we cruise to the second breakfast in Radomierzyce in the Muhlencafe at Joachimstein Castle. In contrast to the stately apartments, the mill can be visited. Today one is just as amazed at the historical technology as perhaps one day extraterrestrials at the gears in the gearbox of the Vulcan.

Holterdipolter on. Near Zawidów, formerly known as Seidenberg, the cobblestone street winds like a scaly giant snake through lush greenery. In the villages, young women in black tops push prams across the street, every now and then a circular saw cuts through the searing heat. At Czocha Castle, instead of casting a castle, we only opt for ice cream and soda from the booth. The Goldentraum dam promises further cooling, while the restaurant is full of calories “Trevi” in Gryfów Śląski. The Ultra Classic Electra Glide by Wieslaw and the Rocket III by Janusz, friends of Adam and our companions for the afternoon, are already parked there. “Highway to Hell” from AC / DC into the player – and off we go at a cautious gallop through pleasantly shaded avenues that have put on their pretty summer dresses, via Jelenia Góra and Sosnówka to Karpacz, the tourist center in the Polish part of the Giant Mountains. The place is not far from the border with the Czech Republic at the foot of the Schneekoppe – but hardly anything can be seen for the forest. And none of us want to change that today. “I’m not an idiot”, Janusz comments on all the sweaty mountain bikers and walkers crossing the road. And Adam punches in on the way back through the Jizera Mountains “X” in the mild summer air, arms and legs stretched wide forward on his power cruiser rolling towards his native Zgorzelec.
