Episode # 16 – Motors

Suction. Compress. Work. Eject. Four bars that unite over a hundred years of mobility history. Most designs, which are all based on four-stroke reciprocating engines, are similarly old. And no matter how much may have changed in over a century of mechanical engineering, every engine still has an independent character.

Despite their many advantages, other forms of drive could not prevail; only electric motors or hybrid drives now have the technical maturity and the corresponding political backing. These concepts are not new either, but at the beginning of the 20th century (for the time being?) The advantages of the combustion engine prevailed. And so have decisively shaped the essence of every motorcycle since the appearance of the first motorcycles. So what do purists appreciate about the single cylinder, for example? Why do many still swear by a V2? Aren’t inline twin cylinders now a universal standard? What is so special about the boxer? In the opening episode of a small podcast series on motorcycle technology, the editors Ralf Schneider, Fabian Dresler and Ferdinand Heinrich-Steige initially talk about large and small singles as well as various designs with two cylinders. In the upcoming technology podcasts, further engine concepts, frame designs, as well as interesting facts about chassis and electronics will follow.

Our podcast has been running since December 2019. We weren’t always on time, but always nervous, tried out different topics and discussion formats and hopefully enriched your motorcycle world a little. It should continue to be just as colorful.
