12 inexpensive textile suits in the test
All-rounder for beginners

A good motorcycle and a nice route to drive – that’s all you need to be happy touring. And the right textile combination for it doesn’t cost much either.

Thorsten Dentges

March 31, 2016

Motorcycle textile suits should be good for everything: rain, wind and sun, night-time cold and stifling city heat. And in the event of a fall, the clothes should also protect against injuries as much as possible. A high demand on the equipment. Motorcycle textile suits with climate membrane have proven to be the first choice for touring riders due to their variable weather protection. Many actually work fine, but come at a price. In the textile upper class, customers like to put over 1,500 euros on the counter for jacket and trousers. A lot of wood in view of the fact that beginners often also have to buy a moped, helmet, boots and gloves.

Motorcycle textile suits from 250 euros

But there are already cheaper offers, starting at 250 euros. But is it worth saving too heavily? We checked twelve very reasonably priced suits to see whether they could keep their promise to be fully fledged touring gear. The combination shouldn’t cost more than 400 euros. A price limit at which, years ago, only little trustworthy functional clothing was on offer. Has anything improved and can such cheap locals really be good for the big tour? We were excited.

Road Tour 2.0.

Purchase information: Polo Motorrad und Sportswear, Tel. 0 21 65/8 44 04 00, www.polo-motorrad.de
Price: jacket / pants / total price (men’s size) 149.95 / 129.95 / 279.90 euros
Extras in the test: back protector (29.99 euros)
Sizes: jacket M to 4XL plus women’s sizes; Pants S to 5XL plus women, short and long sizes
Colors: jacket neon yellow with black, black; Pants black
Weight (in size L): 3.8 kilograms

Country of manufacture: Indonesia

Plus: Absolute top values when testing the residual force values of the protectors, excellent fit of the protectors, ideally enclosing the joints, special equipment with integrated back protector; well-made Cordura upper material; Arm width adjustment with Velcro works well; Wet test passed super.

Minus: Slightly indirect feeling of sitting because the pant lining shifts when driving; Jacket sizes for men only start from M; Lining on trouser legs jams easily; Pants a little short cut, easily slides up.

Conclusion: The inexpensive Road Tour 2.0 polo suit inconspicuously scores points for victory, not least because of its good safety. Great protector seat, top residual strength values, great wearing comfort and weather protection. Really good!

Final scoring

Hooray, the time of the bad sack cuts is obviously over! Or almost. Because the fit of the Germas jacket is still very reminiscent of times gone by, when touring textiles were rather loosely attached to the body and therefore the protectors were mostly bad. For a few years now, upper-class suits have been showing what a good fit looks like: closer to the body.

Fortunately, this trend has also caught on with entry-level suits. Difi and especially Germot, however, are looking too close to the body, which is at the expense of wearing comfort. There is hardly anything to complain about with the other candidates – with these suits you can go well for long journeys. Proper equipment and solid weather protection for driving in the rain complement the overall positive overall picture. So everything is great? No. Cheap protectors and poor air conditioning show where savings are made.

Damp and cold inside: Wetness test in the French test camp.

Lots of test rounds on the country road, wetness tests and residual force values in the laboratory – the effort is great.

Drive like god in France. This was definitely true for our practical part of the test, because at 18 ° C and sunshine on the Côte d’Azur, the testers felt their first spring fever – cold mistral wind completed optimal all-weather conditions for touring over the test laps. However, we had to simulate rain in the wetness test to check the weather protection criterion. During the driving tests on the country road, all impressions on fit, protector fit and wearing comfort were recorded, equipment and workmanship were examined in peace in the test camp. Back in Stuttgart, we measured the protector values using a drop test bench, which among other things. for the criterion “Security” are relevant.
