The Harley sling chain / U-lock kit gets top marks for security. This is for taking with you to the biker meeting
Part too bulky, however.
Verdict: good.

Light and shadow: an almost unbreakable lock – combined with a slack chain as a weak point. The Hartmann lock combination is cheap, but not good.
Verdict: satisfactory.

Mega safe, but also mega heavy at over seven kilos! Top marks for security, but the handling of Kryptonite’s Padlock plus Legend Chain is mediocre.

Kryptonite’s cheaper Evolution Series 4 does not have to hide from more expensive products with the handy 1016 Integrated Chain, because it offers a high level of security.

The chain-lock combination from infactory is one thing above all: super cheap. And she looks safe. But it is not, because cracking is just an easy finger exercise for professionals.

The big advantage of the folding lock: when folded, it is hardly larger than a brake disc lock and more variable than a bracket. Trelocks FS 500 Toro is a good compromise.

The Trelock PK 515/100 armored cable does not offer the security of fat chains, but it can only be cracked with heavy equipment. And remains very handy.

… how to use this. With bolt cutters or diagonal cutters this may not be that complicated, but it is more difficult to acquire and use unlocking tools such as jigglers, handpick sets and electric picks (in the previous picture, top right), which are actually only sold to specialists such as locksmiths.

Of course, metal saws make noise and take time, with a Flex this is much faster – and with a battery it is also mobile, which naturally plays into the hands of thieves.
But now to our big test of motorcycle locks!

Motorcycle theft is that easy
ADAC warns of keyless systems

So-called keyless systems, like those used by more and more motorcycles, are very easy to outsmart. You just need a little technology.

Michael Schumann

Imagine you are sitting in the cafe. Your brand new Ducati is parked outside. But while you stroke the ignition key in your pocket full of pride as a owner, suddenly someone drives away with your motorcycle. It can be as simple as that, as the ADAC proves with a recent experiment.

Multistrada, R 1200 GS and Super Duke R

BMW

The ADAC tested keyless systems from BMW-Motorrad, Ducati and KTM.

Employees from the ADAC “Vehicle Technology” department each took on a BMW R 1200 RS, a Ducati Multistrada 1200 and a KTM 1290 Super Duke. All three with the “keyless system”, some of which are available as an option. It is sufficient for the driver to have the ignition key in his pocket next to or on the motorcycle. A permanently transmitted radio signal unlocks the motorcycle electronics so that at the push of a button the handlebars are unlocked, the ignition is switched on and the engine can be started. However, if the driver sits a few meters away in the cafe with the radio ignition key, the bike is locked.

Antidote to digital abuse: analog

However, the system can be tricked with the help of a radio extension that, according to ADAC, can be produced “with little effort from commercially available electronic components”. This means that thieves can pick up the key’s signal in the cafe and forward it to the outside almost as far as they want. The motorcycle is gone within a few seconds.

The simplest antidote to the possibility of digital abuse is completely analog. “It makes sense to always secure the motorcycle additionally, for example with a brake disc lock,” said ADAC vehicle technician Ruprecht Muller in a video from the automobile club. And ADAC demands that manufacturers offer keyless systems that can be switched off in the future. For the cafe, for example.
