Motorbike roller coaster between volcanic chimneys and Lake Constance

Between the Danube and the Rhine, spring moves a few days earlier. Reason enough to take the dreamy Hegau, the motorcycle roller coaster between volcanic chimneys and Lake Constance, under the wheels.

Out and about in Hegau

Gray soup, frost and snow? Not anymore. When even the weather goddess Claudia Kleinert swaps her dark sweaters and skirts for brightly colored fabrics, announcing high pressure areas and warm fronts with gestures, it is high time to jump in her boots. We in the south are allowed to do this a few days earlier because God means well for us and has given us a few very sunny spots. The Hegau, for example. Surrounded by the freezing cold Swabian Alb in the north and the snowy Black Forest in the west, the striking Hegauberge are ambassadors of a mild, sunny climate. “The German Tuscany” is often praised by hard-pressed travel brochures for the somewhat forgotten strip along the Swiss border.

For the MOTORRAD editorial staff, however, the Hegau is often the savior in need. At the “Rasthof Hegaublick” at the latest, the photographer and test driver can breathe a sigh of relief: finally the sun. So, don’t hesitate for a long time, get off the autobahn and enjoy yourself. We are standing on the 867 meter high Neuhewen, the highest of all Hegau mountains, a popular meeting place for motorcycles. After a rapid descent, we are already floating again over the ridge of the old postal route, which we reach from Leipferdingen and which then takes us down to Tengen. After Bublingen it says “Gruezi”: We are in Switzerland, swing our way up to Opfertshofen and set course for Stein am Rhein, called “Stih am Rih” for short in the Schwyzerdutsch dialect.

With patience and a clear view of Lake Constance, which merges there into the Rhine, we trundle a few kilometers in the mostly dense excursion traffic to Wangen. Turn left there, then we curve over windy, narrow streets to the Schiener Berg, which we leave on an equally curvy descent to Bankholzen. A lap of honor through lush vegetable fields on the Hori peninsula brings us to the port of Horn and an idyllic beer garden right on the water.

After a tricky but scenic bypass from Radolfzell via the Homburg and Ludwigshafen to Bonndorf, we are 200 meters above Lake Constance at Haldenhof. A dream. Which continues immediately afterwards. We pan to the north to view the Hegauberge from the ridges of the upper Danube, and after an amusing ride up and down through the Wasserburgertal we find ourselves at the starting point of our journey.

If we now see the Swiss Alps in full focus and in full splendor, we are lucky – or unlucky. Because after the mild hair dryer that has flushed the air clear, it can rain heavily in between times even in sunny Hegau.

Duration of the trip: 2 days; Distance covered: around 300 km.

Those who want to take the enjoyable loop through the Hegau should take their time, because the most beautiful spots can only be reached in a zigzag.

getting there: From the north via Tubingen, Swabian Alb, Laucherttal, Danube valley to Immendingen. Partly still very cold in spring, possibly still snow at high altitudes. Or on the A 81 Stuttgart-Singen. From the east via Memmingen, Bad Schussenried, Saulgau, Mengen, Messkirch, Tuttlingen. From the west via Freiburg, Furtwangen, Donaueschingen. Partly still very cold in spring. Or via the A 5 to Bad Sackingen, Waldshut, Schaffhausen / CH.

Worthwhile goals: The motorcycle meeting point “Hegaublick” north of Engen with an inn and terrace with a view is compulsory.

The old towns of Tengen and Blumenfeld are worth a break with a short walk. The old town of Stein am Rhein and the Hohenklingen Castle above should not be missed either. If you would like to take a quick look at Sigmaringen on the Danube, we recommend the richly stocked Zundapp Museum in the Zollerhof brewery. There is down-to-earth and inexpensive food right next door in the brewery-inn. It is only a few steps from the parking lot at the Knopfmacherfels to the lookout rock above the Young Danube between Beuron and Fridingen. That is also part of the compulsory program. Almost the entire tour can be seen from the Windegg / Witthoh lookout near Tuttlingen. When the weather is clear, a mountain with a fantastic view. Please take a break.

Spend the night / inns: One of the oldest inns in southern Germany, the “Scharf Eck”, can be found in the middle of the “Flecken” of Fridingen / Danube. Crooked and crooked, with down-to-earth cuisine and definitely highly recommended.
The “Sternen” inn in Bankholzen belongs to the higher class of overnight accommodations. What the family business brings to the plate can be seen and, above all, enjoyed. A little easier, but cheaper, you can stay in the “Schienerberg” inn on rails. Fine Baden cuisine with large portions rounds off the day in Hegau. If you want to move into an above-average quiet quarter, you have to boldly take a small gravel road from Buchheim to the “Jagerhaus” in the Danube Valley. It couldn’t be more idyllic. In the port of Horn, the “Schlossli” beer garden right on the lake is a must. If you can relax, then here.
