The warm-up tour

Tour tip

Away from the autobahn, straight into driving pleasure! In the northern Dolomites, it is easy to enter, but still sporty. From Brixen with a detour through the Antholz Valley, up to the Staller Sattel and back.

October 02, 2019

As quickly as you leave the larger settlement of Brixen behind you and the motorway and industrial areas disappear in your rear-view mirror, you can be right in the middle of the Dolomites spectacle. Imposing mountain backdrops with steep and craggy mountain ranges such as Tullen or Peitlerkofel allow you to quickly forget everyday life, from now on you only concentrate on the narrow stretch of stretch in front of the cockpit and windshield. As a funny detour, the extra kilometers through the Antholz Valley up to the Staller Sattel on the border with Austria are recommended. At the latest after enjoying the Pustertal-Sonnenstrabe you will be well warmed up and prepared for all sport-tourism challenges in the Dolomites.

route: 170 km / Travel time: 4-5 hours (with short breaks), with a stop at the Wurzjoch approx. 1.5 days

Start in Brixen (good to buy provisions etc.)

> Head out of town towards St. Andrea on the SP 29, good, smooth asphalt, nice curves to swing in, last view from above of the motorway and Brixen, then off to the mountains

> Follow the signs to Wurzjoch in St. Andrea, the road will soon start there, still the SP 29

> it goes uphill through a spicy coniferous forest on a mediocre road surface

> Branch or extra deposit up to the ski station on the Plose (Kreuztal / Valle Croce) is not worthwhile, road without a view and quality

> beautiful mountain pass road with a great mountain backdrop, in the foreground the Tullen (2653 m) or Le Odle Geister (3025 m)

> the Tullen in the back beautiful route on a narrow but tidy road through high meadows, lovely, fairytale-like

> After a few kilometers, the utta Borz hut and the summit of the pass (1987 m)

> the SP 29 now with a great mountain view down to St. Martino with homogeneous curves

> on the busy main route SS 244 via Picolin to Zwischenwasser, then on the Strada Longega and follow the signs to Passo Furcia and Plan de Crones (Kronplatz)

> Pass is not a revelation, leads irregularly along ugly ski slopes and lifts up to 1759 meters, then through forest with no noteworthy views down to Olang

> Drive through the settlement in Olang, briefly on the SS 49 to the east and follow the signs to Passo Stalle / Staller Sattel

> wide, straight road Antholzer Talstrabe SS 44, delightful mountain scenery, distance of approx. 20 kilometers to drive very relaxed

> Behind Lake Anterselva, the ascent to the Staller Sattel is regulated by traffic lights, only possible in the last quarter of an hour on the hour

> funny one-way route through light, picturesque forest

> Turn around again at the top of the pass (2052 m) (return possible in the first quarter of an hour after a full hour) or take a longer break (guest house directly at the top of the pass on the Italian side or a few hundred meters below on the Obersee on the Austrian side (kiosk, inn)

> back to Antholz Valley and crossing to SS 49 on the same route as before

> approx. 10 km on the main road with usually high traffic, not a nice route

> In Bruneck you can take a stroll through the city, walk up to the castle (and Messmer Museum) as a break

> In Bruneck do not return to the caustic SS 49, but choose a great alternative route via Falzes / Pfalzen (well signposted)

> on SP 40 (Pustertaler Sonnenstrabe) beautiful wide radii, good asphalt, relatively little traffic, runs parallel above the main route through the mountains, great area for sports tourers

> to Vintl, there again on the SS 49 and to Brixen
