Paderborn, the Senne and the Lipperland

Tour tip

East Westphalia is not exactly one of the top ten domestic motorcycle areas. Why, actually, asks the MOTORRAD travel writer Jo Deleker, who grew up there, and provides a couple of powerful arguments for surprising discoveries in the province.

The Hermannsdenkmal and the Externsteine are not unknown, but if you want to make an exciting journey through time through the Senne military training area, you have to plan more carefully. Because civilians only have access here on a few days. But then you rumble down cobblestone avenues through a world that has not existed outside the restricted area for a long time.

  1. Neuhaus Castle The perfectly restored castle in the Weser Renaissance style with its baroque castle garden would like to be explored on foot. It is worth it.
  2. Senne The Senne military training area is still under British administration. The unique landscape has hardly changed for 120 years. The old cobblestone streets can be used at certain times (information on the Internet). An extremely exciting excursion into the past.
  3. Hermann Monument Who does not know him, Hermann the Cheruscan. 2000 years ago he messed up the Romans in the Teutoburg Forest, was actually called Arminius and was given this 53-meter-high monument in 1875.
  4. Externsteine Legendary cliffs, medieval sacred site, today a tourist magnet in the region. The bizarre sandstone cliffs rise 40 meters from the forest, the exploration is still exciting and puzzling because the function of some of the facilities is still controversial today.
  5. Pader spring area An oasis in the big city. Here the Pader, with its four kilometers shortest river in the country, gushes from over 200 springs. The water comes from the Paderborn plateau, where it seeps away and here comes back to light.

  1. Altenbeken Viaduct The almost 500 meter long viaduct with its 24 arches is one of the most beautiful bridges in the country. And in the middle of the village is the steam locomotive 044 389 as a reminder of the good old days of the Altenbeken railway junction.
  2. Koterberg At almost 500 meters, the flat summit of the Koterberg is not only the highest point in the Weser Uplands, it is also the most popular motorcycle meeting point in the region. There is a lot going on here, especially on Sunday mornings.
  3. Weser ferry Numerous ferries cross the calm Weser. The most beautiful are the yaw ferries, which only cross the river with maximum ecological efficiency using the force of the current and a steel cable.
  4. Schwalenberg A picture-perfect half-timbered town, dominated by the castle. There are also cafes and restaurants here. The perfect place for a lunch break.
  5. The Lipperland Cross the country on roads that are as small as possible. Nothing is spectacular here, the tranquility is the order of the day. Just let yourself drift, there is enough to see in Detmold again.
