Tour tip

To experience the whole Eifel easily takes a week or more. For those who have less time but want an intensive foretaste, a couple of exciting laps through the sensational curves of the northern Eifel are worthwhile.

The Eifel and Switzerland have some things in common. One of them are fantastic curves in hilly or even mountainous terrain, which are sometimes subject to speed limits. Contrary to expectations, this does not affect the driving pleasure.

  1. Kommern: The starting point is the historic center of Mechernich-Kommern, with picturesque half-timbered houses, a beautiful castle complex and a good ice cream parlor near the Hotel Stollen overnight base (Kolner Strabe 58)
  2. Nideggen: Via Gehn, Schwerfen, Burvenich, Wollersheim and Berg you get to Nideggen, where a visit to the castle and the town is worthwhile
  3. Wolf garden: From Nideggen the journey goes via Abenden and Hausen to Heimbach, in the village turn right towards Abbey Mariawald. The curves up there are divine. A break in the abbey relaxes body and mind before taking long and narrow turns to Wolfgarten
  4. Rurberg: You leave Wolfgarten in the direction of Maisbenden, then it goes to Herhahn. On the right, the former Ordensburg Vogelsang lies spectacularly above the fjord-like landscape of the Obersee. It is worth visiting the huge facility here. Goosebumps guaranteed. Then you curve to Einruhr and Rurberg
  5. Mutzenich: The curves dig through dense nature over Dedenborn, Hammer, Rohren. It continues like this through Hofen and Kalterherberg to Mutzenich
  6. Vossenack: Nature and curves. That hardly stops until you reach Vossenack via Paustenbach, Rollesbroich and Simonskall. A good starting point for hikes
  7. Heimbach: Now it goes through the Kall valley to Schmidt, further towards Wolfgarten, but first turn left (Heimbach junction), take the beautiful curves from Mariawald to Heimbach again under the wheels
  8. Kommern: Via Hergarten, Floisdorf to Eicks and then back to Kommern. You should definitely consider a visit to the lovely LVR open-air museum, which is waiting on the way from Eicks to Kommern and in an inimitable way “from the past” told!

  1. Kommern: Tour start (the open-air museum is still attractive). Up to Bergheim, then via Lorbach and Dottel, Urft up to the Steinfeld monastery (site well worth a visit). Then curvy down to Marmagen and via Schmidtheim to the well-known Dahlemer Binz airfield (The Eifel “from above” is extremely attractive). Via Berk to the medieval Kronenburg, where you can eat wonderfully, hike and relax by the lake
  2. Kronenburg: It continues curvy to Dahlem and Blankenheim, near which the Ahr rises. Out of the city and into the idyllic Nonnenbachtal. On the smallest of streets through Nonnenbach, Ripsdorf, Dollendorf, Mirbach, Wiesbaum and Flesten, endless bends to Dorsel and on to Musch
  3. Musch: There are beautiful views and delicious smoked salmon. The route continues winding towards Werft, then comes Reifferscheid. Narrow, steep and winding it goes on to Fuchshofen. In Wershofen, the next opportunity is approaching for an unforgettable Eifel sightseeing flight on the nearby grass airfield
  4. Wershofen: Now comes the curve freestyle: Ohlerath, Harscheid, Dumpelfeld, Liers. Steep, narrow high to Obliers. From there via Burgsahr into the beautiful Sahrbach valley. Then via Unterkralingen, Scheuren, Bad Munstereifel (outlet stores for bargain hunters, historic town center, Heino home) and Mechernich back to Kommern
  5. Kommern: At the end of the tour for a fresh Kolsch in the rustic village pub “In the jar” (Kolner Str. 37), where you can dine very tasty
