Kaunertaler Gletscherstrabe – To the Stichtaler

Tour tip

Two curvy, alpine cul-de-sacs with no through traffic, that means double the joy when going there and back.

At the center of this tour are two side valleys, extremely attractive alternatives to the wide Otztal and the Timmelsjoch.

route: 295 km / Travel time: approx. 7 hours (pure driving time), 2 days with a stop and overnight

  1. The starting point is Sautens at the beginning of the Otztal. Via Otztal Bahnhof and the 171 towards Landeck, in Arzl then turn off into Pitztal, a little later in Wenns turn right to Pillerhohe. The first mountain special test follows here.
  2. Past the Gacher Blick lookout point, winding down again to Kauns and there left towards Kaunertaler Gletscherstrabe. After the impressive Berneck Castle, turn left again – and then you will soon be reached:
  3. The Kaunertal Glacier Road! 15 euro toll that is worthwhile; from 1273 to 2750 meters, from the alpine meadow to the eternal (?) ice. 26 kilometers, 29 hairpin bends – all times two, since in the end you can only continue by cable car. Back to Sautens again over the Pillerhohe, access to the driveway this time not via Kauns, but via Flieb on the 180 towards Landeck.
  4. Part two: From Sautens and Otztal Bahnhof on the 171 towards Telfs, after the stylish Roadhouse Oilers 69 right and on another special mountain test via Haimingerberg and the Silzer Sattel to Ochsengarten; there left and through the Nedertal up to Kuhtai, pit stop at the Dorfstadl.
  5. Continue straight through the Sellraintal to Gries and there at the Almwirt inn, turn right into the lovely Lusenstal; The Alpengasthof Lusenstal is the final stop and possibility to stop for refreshments.
  6. Back to Sautens is most beautiful as on the outward journey to Lusenstal, the route north of the A 12 via Telfs is not that exciting in terms of driving, but places like Seefeld in Tyrol also offer a bit of culture and urban flair.
