MOTORCYCLE tour tip – South Dolomites
The grappa tour

Tour tip

Comparatively few motorcyclists head for Monte Grappa, south of the most popular and well-known routes in the Dolomites. Ditto the “Parco Nazionale delle Dolomiti Bellunesi”. For us all the more reason to travel there.

Tiny strips of asphalt run over extensive high alpine pastures, which actually hardly deserve the name. They lead into hidden valleys and to alpine points over 1500 meters high with a 360-degree view. To where the Alps end. Not always easy to drive and by no means not as pleasing as the mainstream hits further north. Demanding route conquerors with a weakness for something special will love this tour!

route: 245 km / Travel time: 8 hours (with short breaks), 2 days with an overnight stay and enough time for the magnificent viewpoints

Start in Feltre at the Hotel Doriguzzi

> out of the city center in the direction of Pedavena, then follow the sign “Passo Croce d’Aune”

> great route upwards, ideal for sports tourers, good, grippy road surface

> At the top of the pass (1016 m) straight on over the crossing towards Aune and down into the valley (steep descent with sharp switchbacks, not for beginners!)

> through the villages of Aune and Servo down to the main route SS 50

> approx. 15 km north to Fiera di Primiero

> Turn onto the Passo di Cereda, first through wooded area, shortly before the pass (1369 m) open and light landscape with meadows and farms, nice view of the rugged mountains of the “Parco Nazionale delle Dolomiti Bellunesi” (great route with fast curves, neat Asphalt)

> continue to Frassanè and take the delicious curves down to Agordo

> Possibly take a break in Agordo, there a large selection of bakeries, snack bars, cafes, etc..

> In Agordo, follow the SR 203 briefly to the south and then back up into the mountains towards Rivamonte

> towards Tiser and Titele to the south on a small mountain road

> first part partly tricky to drive through dark forest with a lot of asphalt damage and impurities, further down an impressive route through deeply cut rock walls and stream valleys (attention, smaller tunnel passages with wet and slippery ground!)

> along the shores of Lago di Mis, a picturesque reservoir away from the hustle and bustle of tourists (if the weather is good, take a break on the lawn on the shore, take a photo stop, great panorama)

> via Mis and Meano to the main road SS 50, there it goes about 20 km after Kleinststraben-Gewusel again quite quickly to Feltre (end of the first tour loop) start of the second tour loop in Feltre

> on the main route SS 50 to Caupo to the junction on SP 148, follow the sign “Monte Grappa”

> Road to the south, almost one lane, leads through the forest like a tunnel (cracked asphalt, often dirt on the road surface, hardly any overtaking opportunities even for motorbikes)

> The landscape opens a few kilometers before Monte Grappa, but then it is spectacular!

> great alpine route through alpine meadows and an impressive backdrop of the Dolomites in the back (overnight / break tip: Rifugio Scarpon)

> continue on SP 148 downhill towards Bassano (again quite narrow road with little space to overtake, sometimes a lot of tourist traffic)

> About five kilometers before Romano d’Ezzelino great overview of the almost flat Po plain (rest area with benches and take-off point for paragliders, interesting to watch)

> in Romano d’Ezzelino to Semonzetto (or alternative for grappa fans: stop the Gpx route and to Bassano del Grappa to the Grappa Museum or to Schiavón to the Poli distillery with shop, tasting opportunities and company museum, detour in total approx. 40 km, then again latch into GPX route)

> Be careful in Semonzetto, the turn towards Monte Grappa (sign: “Cima Grappa”) is easy to miss

> out of town on a steep, small mountain road to the north, again great view of the Po valley, beautiful mountain route with easy-to-drive switchbacks (28 tornantes!)

> Follow the SP 140 uphill (some beautiful panoramas!) to Monte Grappa to the monument (take a break there, take a photo stop) and back the same route

> Turn left before Tornante number 25, follow the signs to “Malga Mure”

> Wavy, curvy mini-mountain road follow through alpine meadows, drops steeply after a few kilometers, only car-wide, alpine mini-road (challenging to drive, only for advanced users. No fun with heavy touring bikes or cruisers!)

> The road turns slightly to the left into SP 10, you cross the provincial border from Trentino to Belluno (large sign shows the transition), continue towards Alano di Piave

> The route is confusing, the lowest category road, hardly maintained, extremely tricky to drive in the wet

> through the village of Alano down into the Piave river valley, there on the main road SR 348 northwards and back to Feltre
