Pearl in the east

Tour tip

Our regional tour tip far to the east: Raise the curtain on the underrated motorcycle paradise Vogtland.

If it hadn’t been for the turning point, the impressive Wilhelminian style buildings in Plauen would have long since fallen into disrepair. But as it is, the capital of the Saxon Vogtland shines in its old splendor, impresses with its infrastructure, cultural offerings and pub scene. In addition, with an exciting story: Who knows that the fall of the GDR was initiated here? Cruising through Plauen on a motorcycle is fun because it is so often up and down and so jagged around countless corners.

  1. Plauen: The capital of the Saxon Vogtland with its rich culture and industrial history is the perfect starting point for Vogtland tours. Hotel tip with good cuisine and “Sternquell-Pils”: Pension “Matsch” (matsch-plauen.jimdo.com, phone 03741/204807).
  2. Ebmath: From Plauen via Planschwitz, Schonbrunn and Subebach to Ebmath and here over the border a detour to the Czech Republic (Hranice) or to one of the exotic and kitschy Asian markets as a contrast program.
  3. Klingenthal: Via Arnsgrun, Bad Elster, Sohl to Raun. Stop for the open-air museum Landwust, then immerse yourself in the “Musikwinkel”: via Markneukirchen, Erlbach, Wohlbach, Leubetha, Marieney, Schoneck, Hammerbrucke to Klingenthal.
  4. Dawn: Via Muhlleiten to Morgenrothe-Rautenkranz. Visit the Space Museum here.
  5. Netzschkau: Via Schonheide (Eibenstock dam), Auerbach, Lengenfeld, Weibensand to the Goltzschtal bridge near Netzschkau. Like the Brick Elstertal Bridge, but bigger. Detour to the castles Mylau and Schonfels possible. Then via Kleingera, Coschutz, Ruppertsgrun, Jocketa, Helmsgrun (Pohl reservoir), Neuensalz, Theuma Oelsnitz (Pirk reservoir) and Planschwitz back to Plauen.

  1. Plauen: From the starting point to the north to the Dragon Cave Syrau. The stalactite cave is worth a stop. Continue via Frobersgrun, Elsterberg to Greiz (palace, castle, museum). Then Tremnitz, Dobia, Wolfshain (detour to Pausa with a worthwhile visit to the “earth axis” that comes to light in Pausa). Optionally via Pollwitz to Zeulenroda.
  2. Zeulenroda: (charming surroundings, bathing lake), continue via Auma, Triptis, Kopitzsch, Linda, Dreba, Plothen, Knau, Posen and Keila to Ziegenruck.
  3. Ziegenruck: (Bleiloch- and Hohenwartetalsperre, Saaleschleifen, Wasserkraftmuseum), on via Remptendorf, Burgk, Moschlitz to Schleiz.
  4. Schleiz: (Fascination “Schleizer Dreieck”. That means the oldest natural race track in Germany: Since June 10, 1923, everything that has rank and name on two, three or four wheels has been on the motorsport course. Today also the IDM, the International German Motorcycle Championship) . Continue via Raila, Schilbach, Kunsdorf, Frossen, Goritz, Hirschberg to Modlareuth.
  5. Modlareuth: (The place was formerly divided by the border between FRG and GDR. Today a museum reminds of the tragic, dismembered past. A decommissioned T-34 tank and a Mil-Mi-17 helicopter remind of the power of the Soviet brother state) . Continue via Topen, Heinersgrun (Droda dam), Grobzobern, Ruderitz, Schwand, Geilsdorf and Burgstein-Pirk (Pirk dam) back to Plauen.
