Western Vosges – try something new

Tour tip

West of the usual route hits such as the Route de Cretes, there are still many variants in the Vosges to have a lot of fun on a motorcycle tour. We went on an exploratory tour and found an extremely large variety from barely identifiable mountain stretches on small roads to sweeping valley routes.

Not every section is delicious and should sometimes only be viewed as a connecting stage, and some side routes with slippery roads and nasty potholes are more recommended for advanced skiers. Make sure to plan some time for the discoveries next to the route away from the motorcycle.

route: 190 km / Travel time: approx. 5 hours (without breaks), Ballon d’Alsace circuit (approx. 2 hours) can also be moved to the next morning

Start in Fresse-s-Moselle at the Hotel Chateau Pont Du Jean towards Le Thillot

> on the N 66 to Ramonchamp

> turn right on the small road uphill to Rue de Col de Morbieux, follow this road (attention! stress test for overweight cruiser bikes and very heavy touring machines, route can be a bit confusing, when turning off it is always best to choose the uphill variant)

> Road meanders steeply up to the Col de Morbieux pass (located in the forest, is barely noticeable)

> then follow the road downhill again to the main road D 43 at Saulxures s-Moselotte (in the old station building, classic bike workshop by Daniel Behra, a short espresso stop in the bar opposite is recommended)

> on D 43 continue to Vagney, turn on there D 23 via Sapois to Rochesson to the junction D 486 Direction Gerardmer (beautiful, easy to drive and winding country road through the valley, ideal for sports tourers)

> at the entrance to Gerardmer, stop in the direction of the lake and Ramberchamp (tip: follow the sign and turn-off to the “Observataire”, i.e. the observation tower above the lake. The view is great!)

> halfway around the lake to the roundabout and then left on D 417 towards Le Tholy (discovery tips next to the road: “Villaume Daniel” with its sparkling herbs and candy manufactory La Confiserie Geromoise)

> after a few hundred meters turn right up D 30 in the mountains, follow the small road to La Racine and then on the D 31 to the mountain village of La Granges-sur-Volognes

> after the nice, varied mountain and forest route on the fastest way on the D 423 back to Gerardmer (possibly take a break in the village with its diverse gastronomic offer)

> on the secondary route through the foothills of the ski area back to the great motorcycle route D 486 over the top of the pass to La Bresse (there are further opportunities to take a break with restaurants, snack bars and coffees)

> on D 486 to Le Thillot

> past the Hotel Le Pont du Jean on the N 66 to the junction to Ballon d’Alsace (is signposted)

> a beautiful route to drive winds first through the forest, then with a fantastic view at the top of the pass up to an altitude of over 1000 meters

> behind the pass D 465 stay and continue towards Giromagny

> on D 12 and D2 further east, some through town

> shortly before Masevaux D 110, to then left on the D 466 to drive

> behind Sewen again very nice mountain route with appealing curves and great asphalt

> after the top of the pass again on the same road as when climbing to the balloon complete the round and back to Fresse-s-Moselle to the starting point.
