Black Forest

Motorcycle tour tips for southern Germany

MAIRDUMONT / Claudia Werel

For trained bikers with a head for heights and tough buttocks, the presented tour including excursions can be done in a long day. Better: The fun of curves in two days

Exciting motorcycle routes can be found in abundance in the triangle of Baden-Baden, Bad Herrenalb and Forbach, including the classic Rote Lache. Even more grandiose cornering paradises lie between Freudenstadt, Bad Peterstal and Wolfach as well as along the border lines to the southern Black Forest (Villingen-Schwenningen, Triberg to the Kaiserstuhl in northern Breisgau). Because the lanes often meander through shady low mountain forests, you have to reckon with forest and agricultural traffic, dirty roadways or deer crossing from time to time.

There are often speed cameras on the high road that runs across the Black Forest. More leisurely cruising is therefore recommended and leaves room for the grandiose panorama. The change between natural and cultural landscape is extremely attractive, as is the wide range of restaurants, accommodation and leisure activities (wellness, hiking, sports) or the numerous sights such as museums, bike park or Europa-Park Rust. Lake Constance

One of the many special features of the lake is its beguiling light moods. But you have to accept that the streets directly on the shore are sometimes full. Compensation is offered by the magnificent lake view and great breaks. In the hinterland, no matter whether in Germany, Switzerland or Austria, winding, often hilly routes meander through charming alpine landscapes and offer pure driving pleasure.

Worth seeing: pile dwellings near Unteruhldingen, nature reserves Wollmatinger Ried and Altenrhein, Zeppelin Museum Friedrichshafen, old towns of Konstanz, Meersburg, Lindau, Bregenz, Arbon, Rohrschach, Stein am Rhein, the islands of Mainau and Reichenau and wooden boat yards around the lake.

A “must”: the Santis and the thrilling motorcycle routes in its vicinity, for example the Schwagalp.

Overnight stay: Hotel zum Schiff, Meersburg, double room from 89 euros, Brauereigasthof Reiner in Lochau am Pfander, double room from 109 euros.

Maps: ADAC map “Bodensee-Allgau-Oberschwaben” (1: 100,000), GeoMap-Bodensee (1: 75,000).

Bregenz Forest

The goal is the Bregenz Forest, but the two-day tour on the Swabian Alb begins. A 550-kilometer lap over small southern German roads with the MOTORRAD action team.

Two days of touring at its finest: Everything is possible, both sportily scratching curves and enjoying cruising through idyllic landscapes. Cycle relaxed through villages where time seems to have stood still. Experience views that one would not have thought possible in Germany. Driving on forgotten paths that hardly anyone knows. Take a boat into the mysterious Wimsener Hohle, visit a bizarre collection of oldies on the bus, where you can look up to the Alps on nice days.

On the mountain is Uttenweiler-Offingen, where Anton Kegel collects old things: beer mugs, tractors, motorcycles, cars, wrenches, anvils, everything! The streets look like lassos thrown across the country, a few easy gravel passages in between increase the attraction.

The MOTORRAD action team offers these and similar guided tours, e.g. B. under tour number 11094 from June 16, 2017, number 11095 from September 9, 2017 or number 11096 from September 16, 2017, from 290 euros.

German alpine roads

Along the German southern border, selected pass roads and elevated roads in one swing from west to east or vice versa offer the greatest driving pleasure and adventure factor.

The Rossfeld Panorama Road as a 20-kilometer lap in the Berchtesgadener Land scores with a maximum gradient of 24 percent and an altitude of 1,560 meters (€ 4.50 toll). The route from Bischofswiesen to Ramsau is also fantastic: a 20-kilometer Carrera track in top quality, with a gradient of 13 percent. 36 kilometers lead from Reutte to Ettal on the dream road Ammersattel-Plansee: winding curves in front of the brilliant Plansee panorama, 12 percent gradient, height 1,118 meters.

It continues with the Durreckstrabe from Mitterbach to Obersalzberg: 20 kilometers, 13 percent gradient, 1,560 meters altitude. The famous Sudelfeldstrasse leads from Bayrischzell to Tatzelwurm: 12 kilometers, 1,123 meters high, 12 percent. The Oberjochstrabe measures only 12 kilometers, but impresses with great serpentines. The Riedbergpass from Hittisau to Fischen is 28 kilometers long, reaches 16 percent and 1,420 meters.

From Kochel am See to Wallgau? Very good, but closed on Sundays. The Tatzelwurmstrabe from Milbing to Niederaudorf: 16 kilometers of the finest curves!

Bavarian forest

Motorcyclists usually ignore him. Wrongly, because the Bavarian Forest has little-traveled, winding stretches, interesting peaks and a lot of originality.

The 500-kilometer tour, for which you should plan at least two days, starts in Hengersberg, south of Deggendorf in Lower Bavaria, and meanders right through the heart of the Bavarian Forest. Behind Regen, in the direction of Grober Arber, after all Germany’s second highest low mountain range, a winding panoramic road refreshes the gas hand. Pass roads over the Brotjacklriegel, the Kaitersberg and to the Dreisessel increase the demanding driving pleasure and make the varied trip perfect, as well as a detour to the Czech Republic or a visit to one of the numerous glassblowers along the German Glass Road (www.dieglasstrasse.de).

Other exciting attractions are the treetop path in Neuschonau and several enclosures in the national park, where wild animals can be observed. Motorcyclists are welcome guests everywhere, the prices in restaurants and hotels are comparatively low.

Tips: Hotel Post in Schonberg, double rooms from 75 euros, guest house Weber in Arrach, single rooms from 25 euros.

Zittau Mountains

Once the remote location far to the east was a disadvantage, today the triangle around Zittau scores with that. The decelerated 450-kilometer trip takes two days.

This is where you will find what is probably the craziest meeting point for bikers on the planet: on the Czech side of the border triangle, between Velenice and Svitava, a motorcycle club runs the underground bar “Pekelne doly” (“Devil’s Pit”, opening times) www.pekeledoly.cz). Ride your motorcycle through the cave system directly to the counter – a unique experience!

Other caves in the area can also be explored, preferably by enduro or, if in doubt, on foot. Inexpensive overnight accommodation nearby: Pension U Salvátora in Jablonne v Podjestedi, approx. 15 euros. The market square in Zittau and its Czech counterparts in Jablonne and Frýdlant, as well as the narrow-gauge railway in Oybin, the traditional half-timbered houses in Obercunnersdorf and the baroque Konigshain Castle are well worth seeing.

The bathing beach of the Berzdorf lake promises summer relaxation. And otherwise? Just let yourself drift with pleasure and enjoy the empty streets, the rolling hills and the impressive rock formations in the Zittau Mountains.

romantic street

The demanding tour for the long weekend: around 1000 kilometers on the northern part of the Romantic Road. Plan enough time, because there are plenty of attractive breaks!

The best thing to do is to divide the trip into three day tours, each starting in picturesque Rothenburg. The first tour (around 350 kilometers) runs north through the charming Taubertal, then west into the Main valley and finally in elegant dangling through Spessart and Odenwald, where fast curves await. The Romantic Road only serves as a rough guide: In Tauberbischofsheim, for example, the tour does not follow the signs to Wurzburg, but rather the winding route to Wertheim.

The second day tour (around 275 kilometers) stays west, meandering on small roads through the idyllic river landscapes of Jagst and Kocher through Hohenloher Land to almost the Neckar. The third and last part (around 370 kilometers) leads south, with highlights worth seeing in the romantic Dinkelsbuhl and the meteorite crater in the Nordlinger Ries.

In the far south, the tiny streets of the Swabian Alb, which sometimes have an almost alpine character, are a delight for driving.

Franconian Switzerland

Motorcycle tour tips for southern Germany

MAIRDUMONT / Claudia Werel

Yes, one day is theoretically enough for 310 kilometers. But that would be a shame, because in Franconian Switzerland there are not only countless curves, but also many small breweries.

Franconian Switzerland is a really weird area. During the day you can drive on the winding roads on inclines without end. In the evening, the region with the largest density of breweries in the world also provides many guests with rather sloping locations – without a motorcycle, but with its numerous beer specialties.

The tour begins in Lauf near Nuremberg and follows small and very small streets in a veritable maze of curves, past bizarre white rock formations, historic half-timbered houses and countless castles. The highlights include the valleys that are just as worth seeing as they are driving, such as the dreamlike Wiesenttal behind Ebermannstadt or the Kleinziegenfelder Tal in the far north, a real jewel with almost alpine-looking rocky heights, or the creamy route through the Ailsbach valley near Tuchersfeld, where the most famous rock castle is Franconian Switzerland towers. There is certainly no shortage of curves here, and those who have driven dizzy can look forward to a hearty stop.

The motorcyclists’ get-together in the rustic Kathi Brau in Heckenhof-Aufseb (near Plankenfels) is a real cult. Up to 500 motorcyclists roll in here on strong days.

Accommodation tips: Brauereigasthof Reichhold in Aufseb, single rooms from 48 euros, Gasthof Drei Linden, Obertrubach, single rooms from 50 euros.

Upper Palatinate

Motorcycle tour tips for southern Germany

MAIRDUMONT / Claudia Werel

The discovery tour through Bavaria’s Wild East lasts two to three days: a good 600 kilometers of driving pleasure on remote roads, far beyond the usual motorcycle routes.

For the Romans, the wild land of the dreaded Teutons began north of Regensburg, but for today’s motorcyclists, the fun really starts here. Soothing lonely stretches first meander along the Naab, then next to the Vils through the Upper Palatinate Jura to the Franconian Alb. Behind Hersbruck, the narrow and winding valley of the Pegnitz beckons, over pastures – it is best to avoid long-distance roads! – you reach Selb, the northernmost point of the tour, with its three porcelain museums.

Small streets wind their way back to the southeast, through wild forests, meadows and fields – slopes on the edge of Germany, so to speak, along the Czech territory. A worthwhile detour to the Czech Mariánske Lázne, the former Marienbad, which has retained its glamorous grandeur, brings you back to civilization.

Accommodation tips: the motorcycle-friendly classic hotel at the Tor in Weiden, single rooms from 64 euros, Hotel von Heyden in the Regensburg suburb of Tegernheim, single rooms from 63 euros.

Don’t miss: the Maybach Museum in Neumarkt, whose exhibits also include motorcycles.

Main Franconia

In the west of the Spessart, in the east of the Franconian Switzerland – Mainfranken is easily overlooked. You can experience a wonderful 400-kilometer tour on its dreamy side routes.

It starts behind the exit number 100 of the Wurzburg – Fulda motorway, through the Gramschatzer forest down into the Main Valley. The boring expressways on the Main should be avoided. A crisp round through the Bavarian Spessart to Burgsinn and then further along the Franconian Saale is much more fun. The route on the river turns out to be a picture-book landscape with little traffic, mountain stretches to the left and right and a great view like the 480 meter high Sodenberg near Hammelburg.

The route meanders over the Habberge to Konigsberg in Bavaria, where it turns back towards the Main. In two large loops to take the best routes with you, such as the varied Steigerwald behind Eltmann. In nearby Handthal, the Schoppenstubla biker bar attracts visitors to take a break. The stylish conclusion is the crossing of the Main on the “Mainkuh”, a cable-guided ferry near Nordheim.
