We will meet this mermaid more often. Cleverly arranged by the tourist office, the mermaid also appears where there is no lake.

So that the tour through the Allgau Lake District includes everything that the region has to offer, MOTORRAD is happy to seek advice from local motorcyclists. In this case, our thanks go to the BMW specialists at Schek in Wangen im Allgau. (www.motorrad-schek.de).

Spring tour of the Allgau lakes
Out and about on lonely, rustic stretches of land

Between cramped alpine passes and monotonous feeder highways there are still the lonely, rustic stretches of land. So, off the gas and off the train. It is worth it .. A spring tour around the Allgau lakes.

Werner Koch

No, you can’t go any further here, there are only chickens and cows here. But there is no trace of your stupid turn. ”Desperate, editorial colleague Thomas Schmieder tries to have my road book explained on his mobile phone. “Don’t panic, Thomas – just left at the beer garden, then right through the chicken pile and steeply up towards Auerberg. Quite simple. “Well, I admit, the tour along the Allgau lakes is not that easy to find. After all, we don’t want to rush from one overtaking maneuver to the next on the federal highways between mobile homes and 30-ton trucks, but rather explore the country down to the last corner. In peace and quiet and on paths that are made for our passion. No agitated kilometers, because it’s not the distance that counts, but the experience.

The time has to be filled with new impressions, pictures and routes on which we are more challenged and not just burn gas. Learn to orientate yourself again. South, west, north, east, read the time on the course of the sun, determine the route on hills and valleys, forests and meadows. Maps as an overview, but not as a knitting pattern for the shortest route. Take detours because you could miss something. Also because enjoyable motorcycling is not supposed to transport us from A to B, but rather gives us the casual freedom to just turn off when tiny lanes disappear into narrow river valleys. If it doesn’t work, we just turn around. If the unknown route leads us to old mills, rustic inns or fantastic viewpoints, we have become a bit richer.

BMW R 80 G / S turns the exit into pure euphoria

The BMW R 80 G / S, built in 1982, is made for such explorations. A 20-liter tank, studded tires for the most adventurous trails, weighing 190 kilograms and perfectly motorized with almost 70 hp, such a nimble motorcycle turns the already dreamy ride into almost pure euphoria. Even after well over 100 tours by bike and enduro through the enchanting south of Germany, there is still a lot to discover. And to tell. For example, on the most beautiful puzzled motorcycle routes in the foothills of the Alps. The puzzle itself is available to our MOTORRAD readers as a detailed road book, of course also electronically for the navigation system – and free of charge for anyone with a MOTORRAD hero ID. Those who are on paper, on the other hand, have to work harder – or get a bike map on a scale of 1: 70,000 or smaller. But then, that is guaranteed, you can marvel at an Allgau that you can hardly see otherwise.

Right blinker. Already before Memmingen we look for the distance and disappear over red to red into the more than 700 meter high range of hills around the Tristolzer Berg. When the view is clear, the entire chain of the Alps stretches up here from the Zugspitze to the Swiss Santis. To the north, the 767 meter high bus with a church tower rises out of the Upper Swabian plains. Passing the Wurzacher Ried, one of the largest raised bogs in Europe, we cross the first Allgau lakes at Einturnen. And again the uninterrupted view of the Alps knocks us out of the saddle. Whereby, you should be saddle-proof now, because the break in the curve towards Leutkirch is tough. But don’t worry, cities and traffic jams are elegantly bypassed on tiny streets. Instead, we meander through the quaint, down-to-earth Allgau with its ancient farmsteads and countless ponds, lakes and crystal clear rivers.

Here the passionate alpine freak flies away the tin

Hunger? After the crisp roller coaster ride from Ratzenried to Eglofs, follow the Upper Argen to the “Badgasthof Malleichen”. Should your GPS get out of the car, I wouldn’t be surprised. But it doesn’t matter, here, around Wangen in the Allgau, every child knows the way to “Malloiche”. After a rest in the beer garden, a few kilometers further, the narrow valley of the Argen forces us onto federal highway 12, which we leave again at Seltmans. Via a steep ramp we reach Diepolz, which is over 1000 meters high, from where the Allgau main ridge and its lakes spread out like a Luis Trenker memorial wallpaper.

Rote Fluh, Aggenstein and Gimpel on the left, the striking Grunten, the guardian of the Allgau, and the Oberstdorf Alps on the right, including the Niedersonthofener See – here the passionate Alpine freak simply blows away the tin. You can have the whole scenario demonstrated to you a few meters further with coffee and cake in the “Berggasthof Alpenblick” – the name says it all.

Long-distance travel with the MOTORRAD action team

Over the eastern bank of the Iller to the Oberjochpass

Enough for today? Down-to-earth and simple, you can reward yourself at the “Gasthof Krone” with a roast roast and a tasty beer from Missen, before going from one Allgau lake to the next on the next day. If you want to do the whole lap, you have to get up early. Over the eastern bank of the Iller to the Oberjochpass, from Burgberg there is no other choice than the federal highway 308. Hurtig up the serpentines to the Oberjochpass to catch the junction to the Vilsalpsee in Tannheim before 9 a.m. After that, the shift in the shaft and access to the wonderfully situated mountain lake is only possible by bus. Back we take the Engetal to Pfronten, which we cross over a short path and escape the congested Vilstal in the direction of Zell.

North of the main traffic route Kempten – Fussen, our tour of discovery criss-crosses the foothills of the Alps until we reach the northernmost and highest vantage point on the Auerberg. Previously converted into a mountain race track, the undulating one-way street leads to a wonderful observation tower with an inn. The time must be. After a few detours to the northern lakes of the Allgau, which borders on Bavarian Swabia, we float down into the Illertal, where there is the possibility of starting the journey home on the A 7 motorway north. Which is out of the question for us and our sprightly BMW R 80 G / S. Our next destinations are No Man’s Friend, Stupid, Gwigg and Water. Where are they? In the ass of the world, of course, where else??

Motorcycle trip - spring tour of the Allgau lakes

Map: MAIRDUMONT / Claudia Werel

Duration of the trip: 2 days; Distance driven: around 350 kilometers.

Despite the proximity to the Alps, the Allgau Lakes Tour is also suitable for one of the first spring trips of the year thanks to the mild climate in the foothills of the Alps.

ACTION TEAM TOURS 2015: If you want to join MOTORRAD editor and Allgau expert Werner “Mini” Koch, you can do so on the Allgau lakes tour number 3 advertised by the MOTORRAD action team. Date: September 11-13, 2015. All information on: www.motorradonline.de/actionteam or on 07 11/1 82-19 77.

GETTING THERE: The Allgau can be reached quickly thanks to the well-developed routes into the Alps. The A 7 leads from Ulm directly to the center of the Alpine foothills and on via Fussen and Fernpass to the Austrian Alps and Italy. Coming from Munich, the A 96 joins Memmingen. However, the upstream landscapes to the north are among the most beautiful in southern Germany and should, if time permits, be integrated into the journey. From the northwest, the Swabian Alb can be integrated via Bad Urach, Munsingen and further over the Federsee towards Bad Wurzach. From the north, the western forests around Augsburg in the direction of Kaufbeuren are ideal. With this entry, the route can also be completed in the opposite direction to the presented direction of travel. From the west, very varied secondary routes lead via Sigmaringen and the Danube Valley into Bad Wurzach in Upper Swabia. Under no circumstances should the overcrowded and boring B 31 (along Lake Constance) or the B 32 / B 311 (Sigmaringen – Riedlingen – Ulm) be used. As an alternative to the main roads above, very beautiful and low-traffic routes can be explored on the countless secondary routes.

GOOD GOALS: For friends of churches and culture, the monasteries in Rot an der Rot and Ochsenhausen are worth a detour right at the beginning of the tour. If you can’t help it, you can pay homage to the Bavarian King Ludwig II at Neuschwanstein Castle near Fussen. Technology freaks should consider a detour to Wolfegg to visit Fritz B. Busch’s car and technology museum (www.automuseum-busch.de) and beam back to the time of the economic miracle with cars and motorcycles that are well worth seeing to let.

EAT AND SLEEP: Anyone who thinks that the people of Allgau, above all Commissioner Kluftinger, eat mostly cheese spaetzle with roasted onions and beer, is almost correct. Almost, because in addition to the typical calorie bomb, which can also hit motorcyclists like a compressed pile of Pattex, the Allgau innkeepers have other hearty delicacies on the menu.
