Motorcycle and Scooter Market in Italy 2020
Almost six percent below the previous year

Fortunately, the number of new registrations in the Italian two-wheeler market in 2020 was not as bad as feared in the spring. Only 5.7 percent fewer two-wheelers were newly registered compared to the previous year.

01/12/2021

Towards the end of the year, the two-wheeler market in Italy really grew again: there were around 24 percent more new registrations in December 2020 compared to the same month last year. The value is made up of the new motorcycle registrations and the new scooter registrations. The Italian manufacturer association ANCMA reports 4,029 newly registered motorcycles for December. That is an increase of 46 percent compared to the same month last year, while scooters in December were 6 percent up on the previous year with 3,601 new registrations. Overall, the strong December then minimizes the minus in the pandemic year, so that Italy’s two-wheeler market in 2020 is only 5.7 percent below the previous year.

More motorcycles, fewer scooters

In 2020, a total of 218,626 new two-wheeler registrations were registered in Italy. Before that, there was uninterrupted growth in the market for six years. The volume of the two-wheeler market in 2020 can be compared with that of 2018. But there is an interesting difference: the number of motorcycles is growing that the scooter is shrinking.

Changeover to Euro 5

The reason for the strong December numbers is of course the changeover from Euro 4 to Euro 5 and the associated sales and the time-limited possibility of still allowing Euro 4 models at all. By way of comparison, the automotive market, in which there were no sales and new registrations due to new emissions standards: Here the market for 2020 as a whole is 26 percent in the red compared to the previous year.

Individual traffic again in the foreground

Certainly it also plays a role in the new registration statistics that the pandemic has brought individual traffic back to the fore – in Italy, but also in Germany and many other countries. The fact that the two-wheeler markets had to post one or two minus for 2020 is mainly due to the first lockdowns in March and April 2020, which slowed the start of the season considerably.

Conclusion

After the lockdown in spring 2020, the two-wheeler market in Italy recovered quickly and picked up significantly towards the end of the year. The reasons for this are the changeover from Euro 4 to Euro 5 and individual traffic, which has come back into focus as a result of the pandemic.
