New motorcycle registrations April 2021
125cc motorcycles and 125cc scooters are booming

In April 2021, over 23,300 two-wheelers were newly registered. Compared to the same period of the previous year, this results in a growth rate of 33 percent, which is not surprising in view of the Lochdown in April 2020. There was particularly strong demand again for light motorcycles and scooters.

Two-wheeler market in April

If we look at the new registrations in April 2021, the motorcycle market in Germany is double-digit in all categories compared to April 2020: Motorcycles are 19.1 percent above the previous year, light motorcycles 97.6 percent, for scooters it is 20.2 percent and 55.9 percent of light scooters. With these figures we must not forget the first lockdown last year, which lasted all of April.

Two-wheel market January to April

The figures for the full year 2021 are as follows: Here the motorcycle market posted a slight decrease of 0.1 percent, the light motorcycles are clearly in the plus with 22 percent. The ratio is similar on the scooter side: the large scooters with more than 125 cubic meters are up 3.5 percent, while the light scooters have a whopping 27.1 percent more new registrations compared to the same period of the previous year.

New motorcycle registrations

The BMW R 1250 GS continues to lead the ranking of motorcycles – and continues to be overwhelming with a total of 4,565 new registrations this year. In April alone there were 1,202 newly registered vehicles. To put that into perspective: The second-placed Kawasaki Z 900 has 1,569 new registrations for the entire period including April.

New registrations for light motorcycles

A new pecking order appears to be establishing itself in the ranking of light motorcycles this year. Last year, the KTM 125 Duke was still at the top, but in 2021 the Yamaha MT-125 has consistently been in first place since January. In April, 438 units were newly registered, and this year it comes to 1,021 units. Behind it is the Brixton BX 125 with 361 new registrations (820 total) only then followed by the KTM 125 Duke with 352 new registrations in April (787 total).

New registrations for light scooters in April

The 125cc scooter market is also booming and here the Vespa Primavera leads the field with 527 units in April (1,283 in total). In April, the slightly larger and more expensive Vespa GTS 125 was just behind its sister with 517 new registrations, but in the overall period of 2021 it still secured first place with 1,355 units.

New registrations for scooters in April

The Vespa also rules with the larger scooters – in the form of the GTS 300, from which the 125 GTS also borrows the body. For April it can book 809 new registrations and now stands at a total of 2,183 units. In the two-wheeler overall ranking, it ranks second behind the big one of the most popular motorcycles.

Conclusion

There is a lot of movement in there – especially when we lump them all together. The BMW R 1250 GS is currently in 1st place, the Vespa GTS 300 in 2nd place, the Kawasaki Z 900 in 3rd place, the Vespa GTS 125 in 4th place and the Vespa Primavera in 5th place. Last year the KTM 125 made it Duke still behind the Vespa GTS 300 in the top 3 of this overall ranking. Will that tackle the Yamaha MT-125 this year? So far, in this exchange of blows, it would be 7th behind the Kawasaki Z 650 (6th).
