Big differences because of lockdowns

Some motorcycle markets in Europe recorded a big plus in the 1st quarter, others a clear minus. An average of 10.3 percent growth compared to the previous year.

The European motorcycle industry association ACEM (Association des Constructeurs Europeens de Motocycles) is using the five largest motorcycle markets in Europe for growth of 10.3 percent in the first quarter: France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Great Britain. A total of 197,856 units were newly registered in these countries from January to March inclusive. The overall market with all motorcycles and light motorcycles as well as scooters and light motorcycles is taken into account.

67.6 percent increase in March

March 2021 is primarily responsible for the increase of 10.3 percent, contributing 67.6 percent growth and thus a new direction for the negative trend of January (-29.8%) and February (-12.8%) there, namely up. However, one should keep in mind that in the same month in March 2020, many motorcycle dealers across Europe had to remain closed.

And not all of these markets are positive. While Italy with a whopping +47.3 percent and France with +15.1 percent are still up on the previous year, the three other markets are in the red: Spain with -0.5 percent, Germany with -4.1 percent and Great Britain with – 21.3 percent. According to ACEM, the big differences are related to the different forms of lockdowns in the past year, because the basis for comparison for plus and minus are the numbers from 2020. The very high minus of Great Britain can therefore probably be explained by the fact that the British did not yet have one in March 2020 Had lockdown. And the full plus from Italy is certainly due to the opposite effect, because there, in 2020, the shops closed very early and very consistently.

Individual transport and hobby

Overall, due to the pandemic, individual traffic has come back into focus across Europe and motorcycling is of course in great demand as one of the currently possible leisure activities. Still, compared to 2019 – one “normal” Year – Europe is still 4.14 percent behind in terms of new registrations.

Moped growth of 21.6 percent

The motorized two-wheelers up to 50 cubic meters increased by 21.6 percent compared to the previous year with a total of 56,535 units. For this purpose, ACEM does not provide any data broken down by country, but gives the average of the six largest moped markets as growth: Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain).

Conclusion

We currently have to be particularly sensitive to comparisons with the previous year, because 2020 is not a run-of-the-mill year. Therefore, it makes sense to keep the comparison to 2019 in the back of your mind (minus 4.14 percent) and the special market situation in 2021, which in some places also poses special challenges: such as lockdowns, closings, Shortage of containers, missing semiconductors, Etc.
