New motorcycle registrations for 2020 as a whole

Despite the lockdown, over 17 percent more motorcycles were newly registered in Germany in 2020. The total market for two-wheelers is even 32 percent up.

Dina Dervisevic

01/19/2021

That is a strong piece. In March and April 2020, exactly at the start of the season, the two-wheeler market collapses. What happened? The dealers had to close all over Germany due to the lockdown. And that when the year 2020 didn’t get off to a great start in terms of motorcycle sales and the numbers were already below those of 2019 and 2018 anyway.

Significant growth in the motorcycle market since May

On the other hand, things got even more intense after the lockdown: Since May 2020, the number of new motorcycle registrations has been significantly higher than the two previous years. In the end, 17.2 percent more motorcycles were sold than in the previous year. And the curves of light motorcycles (+ 77.5% compared to the previous year) and light motor scooters (+ 107.6% compared to the previous year) exploded. Only the scooters over 125 cm³ could only record a slight plus of 2.3 percent, but this was due to the relatively strong previous year 2019, which, in contrast to 2018, was able to record a full plus of around 19 percent.

Reasons for increasing new registrations

There are many reasons why two-wheelers are so popular in Germany at the moment, which we repeatedly pointed out in our monthly new registration reports last year. Our assumptions:

  1. Motorcycling is just great.
  2. In commuting it saves time, nerves and your wallet.
  3. Many drivers make use of the new driver’s license regulation (code number 196) (extend the class B driver’s license to 125)
  4. A few vacation funds could not be plundered for trips because of the pandemic, which may result in buying a motorcycle or two.
  5. Due to the pandemic, private transport is moving more into focus again, and the market for light motorcycles and scooters in particular is benefiting from this.
  6. Sales and dealer approvals due to the changeover from Euro 4 to Euro 5.

Point 6 in particular caused major jumps in the diagrams towards the end of the year: In December 2020, new registrations of motorcycles were over 327 percent higher than in the same month of the previous year. In the monthly analysis of December 2020, light motorcycles are almost 450 percent above the value of December 2019. For scooters, it is 216 percent, for light-weight scooters 436 percent. Of course, this cannot be explained by motorcycle weather at Christmas, but rather with the change in emissions standards in Europe.

The federal states in comparison line up as follows (total two-wheeler market):

  1. Bavaria: 48,370 new registrations
  2. North Rhine-Westphalia: 41,602 new registrations
  3. Baden-Wurttemberg: 35,722 new registrations
  4. Lower Saxony: 19,733 new registrations
  5. Hesse: 17,633 new registrations
  6. Rhineland-Palatinate: 9,082 new registrations
  7. Saxony: 8,582 new registrations
  8. Brandenburg: 6,714 new registrations
  9. Berlin: 6,284 new registrations
  10. Schleswig-Holstein: 5,625 new registrations
  11. Hamburg: 3,796 new registrations
  12. Saxony-Anhalt: 3,796 new registrations
  13. Thuringia: 3,756 new registrations
  14. Saarland: 3,443 new registrations
  15. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: 2,953 new registrations
  16. Bremen: 1,528 new registrations

The strongest growth is recorded in Berlin and Hamburg with over 47 percent compared to the previous year, the lowest – although we are not from here “small amount” want to talk – are the 21.2 percent increase in the two-wheeler market in Bavaria.
