New registrations July 2020: most popular motorcycles

The race to catch up on the motorcycle market is in full swing: in July 2020 there were over 50 percent more new registrations in the overall two-wheeler market than in the same period last year.

The overall market for motorized two-wheelers includes motorcycles, light motorcycles, large and small scooters as well as trikes and other three-wheel and light four-wheel vehicles. In July 2020, this overall market posted an increase of 54.4 percent compared to July 2019. This is largely due to the lockdown in the otherwise heavy approval months at the start of the season in March and April.

Light motorcycles up 105 percent

But also the new driving license regulation plays a role. It allows motorists, under certain conditions, to drive a light motorcycle without a motorcycle license. This partly explains the many new registrations of 125cc bikes. Compared to the same period of the previous year, the curve soared in July 2020 by 105.2 percent.

Small scooters up 125 percent

But that is not the biggest increase in July 2020. The light power scooters, i.e. the scooters up to 125 cm³ displacement, increased by a full 125 percent compared to July 2019. Looking at the year, they are now also well in the plus with over 80 percent growth. This may be partly due to the increasing volume of traffic and the associated abandonment of car commuting. The need for private transport, which has increased in recent months, is certainly also influencing the number of new registrations in this category.

Do you know someone who, thanks to the new driving license regulation, has got a 125cc??

Yes, of course, myself!

Yes, I know someone who took advantage of this opportunity.

No, I don’t know anyone.

Motorcycles up 42 percent

With a 41.9 percent increase in July 2019, motorcycles are also catching up in terms of new registrations. For the full year from January through July, they are now one percent higher than in the previous year. The months of May (+ 6.7% compared to the previous year) and June (+ 21.2% compared to the previous year) also contributed to the fat deficit of March and April, but July 2020 saw another 40% increase a decent shovel on it, which is why we are looking particularly excitedly at the top 20 models of new motorcycle registrations this month.

The BMW R 1250 GS can book most registrations – including for the entire year. It is the only one in the four-digit range in July. The relatively fewest commercial registrations have the KTM 690 SMC and Yamaha Tenere 700, while the BMW S 1000 XR is the model with the most commercial registrations with 55.2 percent in the top 20. New in the Top 20 in July is the KTM 890 Duke R, which comes in 18th with 212 new registrations and is currently 67th in the overall annual ranking (391 new registrations in total).

Conclusion

For the motorcycle market in Germany it currently looks as if it will be a plus compared to the previous year. Since this year’s vacation trip falls into the water for one or the other, the money saved may be invested in a new motorcycle. The new driving license regulations for the 125cc and the increased need for individual traffic certainly also play an important role.
