The cover and upholstery core need a stable substructure. It’s called a tub, weighs several hundred grams and consists of glass fibers with polyurethane as well as some small parts such as rubber buffers, threaded plates and other components required for later assembly.

The foam, which is responsible for seating comfort, is created in a heated form. Two liquids (polyol and isocyanate) are mixed in a spray head, run into the mold and begin to react after a few seconds, they foam up.

So that everyone can sit well upholstered, careful attention must be paid to how the bench is produced. Here you can see what is important in production.

Finally, the cover is stapled with around 100 metal clips, then the excess is trimmed and the finished bench is thoroughly cleaned. After the final inspection, the checked bank goes into the box and off it goes to the vehicle manufacturer.

After about six minutes, the foam has hardened to such an extent that an employee can remove the finished padding core from the molded part. Before further processing, the good piece must then rest for at least another 24 hours.

After a pure production time of over an hour, pretty hard manual work is now required. Strong employees pull the fur of the various upholstery and foam inserts, more precisely the cover over the ears.

The Fehrer upholsterers use a trick to ensure that the seat cover is nice and tight and wrinkle-free. With a long metal hook you pull seven small loops sewn onto the cover through the tub – this is called “pre-stapling”.

It takes around three months of precision work until the final production tools are created from the first modeling clay. Here the cutting templates for a cover for the driver’s seat of a fat BMW tourer are being checked.

Several seamstresses put the individual parts of the seat covers together exactly on special sewing machines. In addition, all the seams of the bench are sealed with a PU film to prevent the ingress of water.

Elaborate benches, like those for fat BMW tourers, consist of six layers: tub, molded part, first soft cover, heater (which is being glued in here), second soft cover and cover. In the case of simple, inexpensive products, the cover sits directly on the molded part.

The cutting templates serve as templates for the punching knives. An employee ensures that the knives are correctly positioned on the reference piece goods. The punch press pushes the cutting tool with around 15 tons of pressure through 15 layers at the same time. A set of knives holds around 30,000 to 40,000 covers.

If the legs are too short, the bench has to slim down
Correctly cushion the motorcycle seat

If you sit too high on the motorcycle, you have many options for reducing the seat height. Probably the easiest way to get a secure footing: padding the bench.

10/26/2011

Anyone who can come to terms with a narrower knee angle and often reduced seating comfort should keep their hands off the chassis and entrust their seat to an experienced saddler. This cuts out the foam in the area of the driver’s seat and thus ensures a moderate seat height.

What sounds so easy, as if you could make this change with a sharp bread knife and manual dexterity at home, often turns out to be a very demanding task in practice.

Because with the cut-off foam, not only does seating comfort go down, but also the cushioning properties of the upholstery. Depending on the consistency and overall height, this makes a decisive contribution to ensuring that short, hard bumps in the road, which are not absorbed by the suspension / damping, do not torture the driver.

In order to meet this requirement, the few real specialists in the industry work out a mixture of foam layers of different hardness that is adapted to the driver’s weight and the contour of the rear part. This is the only way to achieve acceptable shock absorption at a low seat height.

But even then there are limits: “In order to still sit comfortably, the new, mostly two-layer cushion must be at least 25 millimeters thick,” explains specialist Gerd Jungbluth (www.alles-fuern-arsch.de).

The problem with many benches: The substructure is often not smooth, but has more or less pronounced bulges upwards, which are necessary to create enough distance to electrical components that are placed under the bench.

For this reason, one must also warn against simply lowering the entire bench, for example by removing the rubber pads or moving the screw connections. If the seat presses on components such as regulators, rectifiers, ignition boxes or plug connections under the load of the driver, these can be irreparably destroyed.

A wide seat forces the thighs to be spread wide, which increases the crotch curve. The driver only stands on tiptoe. If the bench is the same height but is narrower, the step curve is narrower, so the legs find a secure stance when stopping at traffic lights and maneuvering.

Not every padded bench is suitable for long journeys after the operation. Anyone who has the friendly, but inexperienced upholstery company around the corner carved as deep a hollow as possible in the foam, sits as deep as possible, but at least as immobile in the saddle. While a rounded cushion feels quite comfortable for the first few kilometers, it becomes torture on longer stages, as the driver hardly has an opportunity to change the seating position. This not only puts excessive strain on the rear, but also forces the driver into a passive and stiff sitting posture.

In addition to the overall height of the bench, the overall width of the seat also has a significant influence on the subjectively perceived seat height. For this reason, many of the bench seats are much narrower in the front area than the actual seat (see photo). If the overall width of the frame and footrest area is slim, the perceived seat height is often significantly lower than that of a comparable motorcycle with a wide waist. For this reason, BMW, for example, not only specifies the seat height, but also the so-called step length. In addition to the height, this also takes into account the width of the bench edge.

Allow 60 to 140 euros, depending on the amount of work involved in the renovation. It becomes more expensive when the original seat bench cover can no longer be used and a new one has to be manufactured to match the contour. However, the price and effort can be clarified with the companies in advance. Important when placing an order: The delivery date for the finished bench should be confirmed in writing. Because the most beautiful motorcycle is of no use without a seat.
