Blue sheep in the sidecar

Wherever he went, the German photographer Thomas Goos caused a sensation during the Tourist Trophy. Because he had a life-size blue plastic sheep with him everywhere.

It already started on the autobahn. Since he had directed his BMW team to the Grob-Gerau-Sud driveway near Buttelborn, he was sure to have noticed: “From cars, mobile homes and trucks they waved to me, laughed and pointed their thumbs up.” his co-driver. A blue sheep had taken a seat in the sidecar of Thomas Goos ’BMW R 1150 GS, was looking expressionlessly ahead with blue eyes, waiting patiently towards the destination, no matter how far away.

The blue sheep was supposed to play a photo model on the Isle of Man, the crazy island between England and Ireland – during the Tourist Trophy. “Of course most of them thought I was crazy,” grins Goos, the Grob-Gerau professional photographer. And there is no question that it is – to drive an artificial blue sheep a good 1000 kilometers, to place it in the landscape and to photograph it. However, Goos, who had already driven three times with friends (but still without a sheep) to the races on the island, not only noticed on the autobahn that the crazy also has its good: “The sheep is a real popular figure. Wherever I turned up with it, total strangers greeted us happily, made room for us when things were tight, let us through or helped us when I had to turn around tightly or maneuver backwards with the team. And I’ve never been served as much beer on the ferry as this time. “

“Thank god it never answered me”

He donates the money that Thomas Goos earns from selling the photos of the blue sheep on the Isle of Man “Bikers Support Nepal”.

The sheep is part of a work of art, comes from the blue “peace herd” of a Cologne artist couple who are friends with Goos. But the photographer didn’t just take it with him to the Isle of Man for some deeper purpose. “No, besides watching races and motorbikes, I just wanted to do something else. I’m a photographer, I didn’t learn anything else, so I wanted to take pictures and looked for a topic. ”That’s how he came across the sheep. And because his partner Pauli had no desire to accompany the men’s group to Man anyway, Pauli’s place in the BMW sidecar was free for the blue sheep.

During the TT, Goos drove early every day to position his model somewhere else on the island and to take pictures in the best morning light. On the pebble beach, among highly irritated, living conspecifics on a sheep pasture, in the pit lane in Douglas, but also in the middle of the “Mountain Course”, the mountain roads that are only passable in one-way direction during the TT. “I asked a few police officers about that. They were so enthusiastic that they closed off the entire course especially for me. ”A few minutes later the guy with the“ German sidecar and the blue sheep ”had his photo in the box. The sheep looks calmly in the direction of the bikers waiting and smirking behind the police barrier. “On the fifth day I started talking to the sheep when I left in the morning,” says Goos with a grin. “I said ‘Good morning’ and things like ‘Well, let’s go again!’ But thank God it never answered me … “

Proceeds go to “Bikers Support Nepal”

The photographer was at the TT on Man for the first time 15 years ago. “We happened to be living next to Joey Dunlop at the time. That was a funny bird. And drinkable! ”Since then, Goos and a regular group of friends have been driving every five years. The group has already booked again for 2020. But the photo professional from Grob-Gerau is also on the road a lot. If it’s not for jobs like photographing the entire Suzuki motorcycle model range on Mallorca or the parking garages of the new Berlin capital city airport, which may one day be finished, then the Hessian also likes to take part in organized motorcycle trips. In 2012 he was on a trip through Nepal with Enfields and got to know “a wonderful country with incredibly open, nice people”. And also the tour operator and organizer Peter Paulo Dos Santos, who continues to offer the Enfield tour to the roof of the world together with the MOTORRAD action team.

After the devastating earthquakes in April and May 2015, Dos Santos launched the “Bikers Support Nepal” aid project in order to provide long-term help in the reconstruction of the destroyed infrastructure as effectively and permanently as possible. From India, where Dos Santos runs his motorcycle travel agency, the German organizes “Motorbike Solidarity Rides” in order to bring the donations into the country and exactly where they are needed most.

The money that Thomas Goos earns by selling the photos of the blue sheep on the Isle of Man is donated by the photographer to “Bikers Support Nepal” by Peter Paulo Dos Santos. A high-gloss fine art print in the format 70 x 50 centimeters costs 65 euros (40 x 50 cm: 45 euros). From every sale, 30 euros go to the Nepal Aid.
