Practical test of the Shoei XR 1000 helmet
Jack of all trades?

Shoei’s most successful helmet to date, the XR 900, will be replaced by the successor model this summer. Not an easy inheritance. But in the first MOTORRAD test in Europe, the XR 1000 convinced.

It arrived at the end of April. The package from Japan. Content: the first, almost hot off the press Shoei model XR 1000 from series production. The new one should go
On August 1st of this year, replace the popular XR 900, of which around 35,000 units were sold in Germany alone.
One of the most noticeable changes is the distinctive spoiler on the back of the head, the Shoei like many other manufacturers stuck on for security reasons. If it were firmly laminated into the helmet shell, the helmet could get caught in an obstacle in the event of an accident. But as it is, the spoiler tears off when the force is great. Other external differences include the two ventilation openings in the forehead area and the large, fish-mouth-like inlet for the visor ventilation.
Both ventilation systems were completely convincing in MOTORRAD’s extensive driving tests. From around 40 km / h, noticeable cooling air flows to the head area when required. Also with
the XR 1000 collects aerodynamics
Plus points. The helmet proves to be absolutely neutral up to the highest speeds and is very calm and stable in the approaching wind. In addition, the new one is pleasantly quiet by Shoei standards. Although it still can’t keep up with a Schuberth S1 or Baehr Silencer, an improvement over its predecessor is clearly audible.
This also applies to the outstanding fit of the XR 1000. The helmet fits perfectly around the head and impresses with its cozy, yet firm padding down to the cheek area. A wind deflector on the chin provides additional comfort and prevents unpleasant air turbulence in the interior. When the visor is closed, the face is practically completely protected from drafts.
The very few points of criticism include the occasional slight whistling noises, the cause of which could not be located during the test, as well as the pinlock double visor that is too small. Especially when the head is tilted forward in a sporty manner? for example when crouching on a super sports car ?? disturbs the upper edge of the visor (see also the photo above on the right). But the annoying fogging is finally a thing of the past? a real plus in security.
It is Shoei-typical
Visor mechanism. Changing the visor only takes a few seconds. We also like the rocker button on the side, with which the window is opened a crack, right? also
that is new ?? can be locked in the closed position. This locking prevents in the event of an accident? at least up to a certain force? accidental opening of the visor. Otherwise, stones or flying splinters can lead to facial injuries.
All in all, the new Shoei XR 1000 leaves a very good impression and is sure to be at least as successful as its predecessor. More information about the publication date and

Shoei »XR 1000« helmet: practical test

True to the motto “Standing still is going backwards”, those responsible at Shoei began developing a successor to the XR 900 as early as the end of 2000, although it was only launched in 2001. According to the specifications, the criteria for wearing comfort, aerodynamics, noise and ventilation, among other things, should be improved. In terms of wearing comfort, the Japanese go to great lengths compared to their competitors. Since European heads are shaped differently than Asian or American heads, Shoei has always used different interiors and fits for Asia, America and the European market. In order to determine the best fit, test drives with selected drivers from the respective continents are on the program for every new helmet development. In addition to the extensive practical tests, Shoei also carries out tests in its own laboratories. For example, the technicians in the wind tunnel optimize the shape of the outer shell and the ventilation channels. The aerodynamicists spent many hours in the laboratory just for the air outlets on the back of the head spoiler of the XR 1000, until a shape was finally created that ensured optimal ventilation with the least possible disruption of the flow around the helmet. To test what is going on under the helmet shell (keyword moisture balance and ventilation), Shoei uses a measuring head with a large number of electronic sensors. Last but not least, the testers in the test laboratory destroy dozens of helmets every day according to the prescribed standards (e.g. ECE 22.05) so that improvements can be made to the design of the outer shell and the styrofoam core during development. And although the XR 1000 will be released in a few months, the Shoei engineers and designers have been working flat out on its successor for a long time.

It can do practically everything better than its predecessor, the XR 900. The new one is much quieter and has finally got a fog-free visor. Fit, ventilation and visor mechanics are impeccable. All in all a real top helmet, the pinlock washer, which is a bit too small, and the occasional whistling noises do nothing to change that. very good
