Practical test textile jackets of the upper class
Everything OK

Ten upper-priced textile jackets with a functional membrane had to show their colors in the practical test. MOTORRAD shows which vehicles the traffic light is green for.

Uli Holzwarth

To be continued, MOTORRAD promised after the last, extremely disappointing test of eight textile jackets with a functional membrane in the price range around 200 euros (MOTORRAD 5/2001). This time ten luxury motorcycle jackets had to prove their practical suitability. Anyone who invests between 400 and just over 500 euros in such a high-tech item of clothing made of abrasion-resistant synthetic fibers and Gore-Tex membrane (Spidi with H2Out membrane) has correspondingly high expectations. In the most important point, wind and rain protection, these were met with flying colors by nine test candidates (see adjacent box). On the other hand, the presentation of the Yoko Freeride is not convincing, the exactly identical water entry points on both sleeves indicate a careless workmanship when gluing the Gore-Tex laminate.
The Finnish product also shows weaknesses in terms of fit. The cut, which is much too short and too wide in the area of the jacket waistband and chest, only allows the conclusion that the typical driver posture on the motorcycle was not taken into account when the jacket was developed. Some competitors have to put up with this accusation in a weakened form, some of whom are annoyed with sleeves that are too short, a collar that is too wide and non-adjustable, or other impractical details such as an incorrectly placed waist belt. Before buying, it is therefore always advisable to have an extensive seat test on your own bike to check the fit both with and without the inner lining.
The Dream GTX from Stadler give. The excellently processed and well-equipped jacket is not only available in the common sizes for women and men, but also in many special sizes for slim or stocky figures as well as ?? extra charge ?? as made-to-measure.
With this variety of sizes, the all-round convincing Stadler jacket ultimately secures victory, although some competitors can certainly keep up in terms of equipment, material appearance and workmanship.

Yoko – freeride

MOTORRAD verdict: conditionally recommendable

Wetness test

To test the waterproofness, all subjects without an inner lining had to defy a ten-minute surge of water from a high-pressure device. That this simulated downpour is suitable for uncovering weak points was involuntarily shown by the unfortunate test pilot, who was completely soaked from step down despite wearing a rain suit that was worn underneath and was dense in everyday life. Nine out of ten textile jackets withstood the masses of water with ease. Only the Yoko Freeride, the only jacket in the test with Gore-Tex laminate glued directly to the outer material, messed up with water ingress on the zippers on both sleeves.
