KTM 1190 Adventure in the PS driving report

When sports motorcyclists want to sit upright

Content of

A roared "Caution!" makes anyone who enjoyed military service stand at attention to this day. Instead of shouting, the new KTM 1190 Adventure uses other means to ensure that we adopt posture and want to sit upright on a motorcycle.

Press spokesman Thomas “Kutte” Kuttruf and project manager road motorcycles Jorg Schuller really try to present the new KKeep TM 1190 Adventure short. Which is difficult, because the highly complex adventure bike has kept the KTM development center in suspense for the past three years. And a corresponding number of noteworthy details can now be found on the completely redesigned Austrian. After 67 minutes and 31 seconds it’s done. The crowd of journalists scratching their hooves is dismissed with the sentence: “Take it slowly. She can do that too! “

Exactly 12 minutes and 47 seconds later, I give the stilt bucket the spurs. Let the twin derived from the Superbike RC8 pull me onto the expressway towards the mountains. Yes tear, do not travel! From 4000 rpm, the Adventure pushes massively, and from 6500 to 10000 tours it tears down walls. The traction control keeps the front wheel on the ground and converts the 150 PS strong Ballermann’s lust for life into efficient acceleration. Hardly five minutes later the terrain changes, it goes down from the expressway into the mountains. Up to the landmark of Tenerife, the Teide volcano.

At least when it comes to turf, the KTM should turn a long nose at the large stilt competition.

A constant flip-flop from left to right and back begins, we screw our way towards the sky over a minimal distance. The 1190 thunders out of every corner, but even in the most active sport mapping of the TC it goes into the control range shortly after every corner apex. That needs to be fixed. A short stop on the side of the road, a handle in the E-menu and the TC is switched off. To do this, I activate the off-road ABS, pre-tension the springs using the electronic chassis (800 euros extra charge) and go back down the narrow lane.

Eureka! How does that work! The Adventure shoots out of every corner on the rear wheel! The brakes are very tasty, the fork doesn’t dip too far for an Enduro, the 19-inch model, which has now grown to 120/70 in size, bites hard on the asphalt without noticeably standing up and the KTM flies at the apex of the bend opposite. You pass this without any components and open the gas early. No annoying load impact, nothing messes up the line. The twin simply presses forward, relieves the front wheel of its leadership role at 6500 rpm and extends it towards Petrus and his group of angels. I quickly put third gear down, put the front wheel down again in good time before the next bend, in order to get into my shoes. Shift down – the rest of the work is always done lightly, precisely and with short distances -, release the brake while turning, and with verve it goes around the next corner. Speed and rhythm harmonize as if by themselves, the 2200 meters of altitude from the hotel to the volcanic cone are overcome in no time at all. Up there, in the middle of the black lava landscape, an insane view beckons. It’s time to let the engine, brakes and tires cool down and, despite the view, take a closer look at the new all-purpose burner.

The twin, borrowed from the Superbike RC8, also shows its best side with 150 hp.

You might think that big travel enduros have replaced superbikes as the development vehicles in the industry, as they are now so crammed with assistance systems. Would also make sense, because while superbikes and super sports cars are seeing declining sales figures worldwide, large and travel enduros are like sliced bread – see BMW R 1200 GS. And it is precisely this top dog that KTM is targeting with the Adventure. ABS with on- and off-road mode, traction control that can be switched off, four different injection modes, electronically adjustable chassis, standard pannier racks and much more make the KTM a real GS killer.

The gel bench can be locked in two heights, the windshield can be locked in three positions, and in the front panel there is an on-board socket and a minimalist storage compartment. An LED daytime running light in the front and LEDs in the rear light round off the high-quality equipment. Only the electronically adjustable chassis (HP recommendation), the main stand, the heated grips and the suitcases, which are available in various sizes, have to be paid extra.

Although I don’t let myself be told by marketing fuzzis, I slowly pick up the drive again after the short break. Shift up early and let the ride-by-wire-controlled ex-athlete bubble away at low speed. Chassis setting for comfort, injection mapping for street, that’s how I chug quietly and relaxed through the volcanic world. In sixth gear at 2000 tours, the speedometer shows a ridiculous 52 km / h. When the throttle valve is fully opened, the Twin does not respond with an unmotivated chain hook, but with an electronically controlled, gentle drive. Subjectively, the actually agile engine doesn’t really come out of the quark. Only after what feels like an eternity, 3500 revolutions have been reached before the furnace pushes forward again. The next test will clarify whether it actually generates too little tractive force around the bottom or whether it only looks weak because it goes so well from 4000 rpm.

The electronically adjustable chassis is new at KTM, but it costs 800 euros extra.

And what else do you notice? The wind protection of the adjustable disc could be better, especially in the helmet area. The height-adjustable gel bench, the adjustable notches and the handlebars that can be screwed on in two positions ensure great ergonomics that are not too passive. The electronic helpers can be set intuitively using the left-hand dashboard, but unfortunately the instrument cluster is not easy to read. Especially with sunlight from behind and a bright helmet, you don’t see much apart from your own reflection. Oh yes, there is the clutch: Dear Ducati engineers, please use the clutch of the 1190 Adventure. Just so you know how easily you can do something like this – and without any magic.

After 350 kilometers on the winding roads it goes back to the hotel, but not as “Kutte” wanted it to be. Although it can, “Nice and Easy” should be done by others. After 30 kilometers in sniffing mode, I freed the Adventure from its electronic shackles, wheezed boldly, drifted into bends on the brakes and, to say goodbye to the hotel driveway, I missed a few black bars made of Conti rubber. The upright sitting posture forced by the KTM didn’t do any harm when burning and fooling around – on the contrary. And the 1190 Adventure went through everything without complaint, just as a loyal companion should do. We shout a jagged “Attention” and salute the KTM respectfully.

PS judgment

With the Adventure, KTM clearly has the BMW R 1200 GS and the throne of all-purpose weapons in its sights. A test will show whether she has the GS under control. What is certain, however, is that the 1190 is a great success that is just as good for relaxed strolling as it is for traveling or racing. At least when it comes to turf, she should turn a long nose at the assembled large stilt competition.
