Three cylinder toy

The Yamaha MT-09 is the first Japanese three-cylinder motorcycle in 30 years and with this top-notch engine it is a direct hit! We have already been allowed to drive them.

The Yamaha MT-09 presented itself with a lot of self-confidence: "The dark side of Japan" is the motto, the ambience industrial, trashy. Oil drums burn like in the Bronx in a rocky warehouse in the middle of the port of Split. If nasty Death Metal were booming out of fat boxes and black-made-up, scantily clad girls were dancing on poles, the show would be perfect.

Technology and equipment of the Yamaha MT-09

And with it from the emotional brief to the theoretical part: The Yamaha MT-09 pushes a lively 115 hp, pushes with a maximum of 88 Newton meters of torque and massages the soul and the bottom of the pilot under load from 6000 rpm with good-natured vibrations. The 850 cm³ engine is particularly appealing because of its liveliness. It always pushes and pushes without being overwhelmed, it can be strolling and burning.

In addition to just running the engine, the important little things from the periphery can also convince. The operating force of the clutch is user-friendly and low, the transmission can be shifted discreetly and precisely. Only the throttle response is in the mappings "default" and "A." (A stands for sporty, direct response) too hard. But remedy is available. Those who prefer the gentler use of power simply switch to the mode "B." and has his peace of mind – the full 115 hp are available in all three modes.

Speaking of injection modes: The Yamaha MT-09 is not a superbike where something like this is standard. No, we are sitting here on an extremely attractively priced mid-range naked bike, which also shines with good equipment and very good workmanship. Even the basic setting of the MT-09 is on the sportier side. And if you want to adjust the direction tighter or softer, you can do this using the adjustable rebound damping on the fork and shock absorber. The fact that the fork’s responsiveness is good, but not top-level, is evident in a well-priced mid-range bike.

But the brakes of the Yamaha MT-09 really knock you out. Above all, the front stoppers are beyond all doubt and slow down vehemently at any time. We couldn’t test the ABS, which is subject to a surcharge (500 euros extra), but it will certainly be installed on the first test motorcycles. What we were allowed to test and experience, however, was the ergonomics of the als "Roadster Motard" designated Yamaha MT-09. We tore down almost 300 kilometers in her saddle, had fun every meter of it and no complaints whatsoever. You find yourself front-wheel-oriented, but not too sporty and placed deep in the motorcycle. The wide, comfortably cranked handlebars are easy to hand and ensure an upright posture.

It is surprising then that there is hardly a tight curve that you do not wheel out. The powerful engine, the agile chassis, the seating position, everything fits and everything seems to only want one thing – to offer fun. As
in a well-rehearsed choir, every detail, every component of the Yamaha MT-09 seems to be singing loudly: play with me, play
with me play with me…
