Strongest monster of all time

MOTORRAD met Ducati boss Claudio Domenicali in Bologna for a ride with the new Ducati Monster 1200 S. A first seat test on the water-cooled naked bike, the strongest monster of all time.

Even Ducati press spokesman David James is amazed: “Normally Claudio is triple-booked.” The day before, he had doubted that the regular meeting with MOTORRAD, even after Claudio Domenicali was promoted to the top Ducati boss in spring 2013, would really work would come about. But he obviously still values personal contacts and direct feedback from the MOTORRAD experts and therefore has a few extra hours in his packed schedule for a trip with the new Ducati M.onster 1200 S blocked.

Drive no, test sit yes

In any case, it is helpful that the route is known. Because Claudio Domenicali is not only a passionate motorcycle fan, he also pulls the cable courageously. An interesting test, for example, is this spacious roundabout with no visible lanes near the Ducati plant. A wild and bustling chaos that has nothing to do with orderly German traffic conditions. Here the wiry Italian stands out with an ambitious choice of lines, as if there was no tomorrow.

Ducati boss Claudio Domenicali took extra time for a trip with the new Ducati Monster 1200 S. These meetings with MOTORRAD have become a tradition.

In addition, the display shows an ice warning in bright yellow. It’s cold in Bologna, damn cold, fog makes the asphalt damp in places. The company boss drives the new Ducati Monster 1200 in the S version, i.e. with Ohlins suspension elements, upgraded braking system, carbon trim and an engine with 145 HP that is 10 HP more powerful than the basic version. And it pushes hard, making the front wheel dance airily over the asphalt during the sprint.

The MOTORRAD delegation is not yet allowed to drive, it is allowed to sit for a try. Ergonomically, the Ducati Monster 1200 has made significant progress compared to the 796, the handlebar ends are higher and less cranked down. The machine appears less cramped and also offers long drivers space. The seat height is adjustable in two ways. Typical Ducati is that the right foot hits the bend with the heel.

The TFT display is inspiring with its many colors and high contrast, and is easy to read in all lighting conditions. In this regard, all of the competition in this segment looks pretty old. Especially since the Ducati cockpit offers a wide range of options: the layout and display content switch analogously to the driving modes. The new Ducati Monster 1200 offers three programs – Sport, Touring and Urban – these influence the responsiveness and power output of the engine, ABS control and traction control. Individual programming is also possible via a setup menu. The S version has the finest brake components from the supersport sector with huge 330 mm discs and Brembo M50 calipers. The latest generation of Bosch ABS ensures safe deceleration even under these slippery conditions.

New alignment in chassis tuning

Claudio Domenicali attaches great importance to the fact that great progress has been made in terms of drivability: “We have made many changes to the engine, for example a new ride-by-wire that makes the engine finely controllable.” Bologna. Has the penny finally fallen? Possibly, because a new direction is also emerging in the chassis tuning. The Ducati Monster 1200 S appears to be comfortably tuned, the suspension is responsive. If you can tell from the outside, the Ohlins components work in good balance at the front and rear. That was not always so. A subtle, voluminous sound, no thundering blast, fits the new direction. Will the monsters now lose their terror? She definitely seems tamer, certainly not toothless.

Ducati

Ducati boss Claudio Domenicali (left) with MOTORRAD editor-in-chief Michael Pfeiffer in conversation about the new Monster 1200 and the motto “Performance redefined”.

The Monster 1200 seems like a completely new motorcycle. When did Ducati start this project??
Domenicali: We started working on the basic concept back in 2010. We decided on the water-cooled engine and developed further specifications in line with our new motto “Performance redefined”.

Similar to the Panigale, the engine is now a substantial load-bearing component. Extensive reinforcements were necessary for this?
Domenicali: No, the crankcase is even unchanged. However, the heads had to be heavily modified for the mounting points of the main frame, rear and suspension strut.

Otherwise, the engine of the Monster 1200 differs from the versions in Multistrada and Diavel?
Domenicali: The Multistrada and Diavel already have different versions of the eleven-degree Testastretta 1198. The Multistrada features the second generation engine with double ignition, secondary air system and modified injection. This is what the Monster 1200 engine with the changed heads is based on. It also has higher compression and smaller throttle valves to get more torque and smoother power delivery.

The Monster 1200 takes up design elements from Diavel and Panigale. Is that the new Ducati style?
Domenicali: The 1200s has been completely redesigned, yet immediately recognizable as a monster. I am glad that you can recognize a design line. Continuity and brand identity are extremely important to us.

The multi-colored, programmable TFT display looks fantastic. Such a part is expensive?
Domenicali: Both hardware and software are expensive to develop and manufacture. We have devoted a lot of time to functionality, also here according to our motto “Performance redefined”.

Why was the classic air-cooled Monster 1100 removed from the range?
Domenicali: The Monster 1200 replaces the old model. It is a new product with a modern concept, with more power and more comfort. In the near future, the air-cooled Monster 696 and 796 models will also remain in the range; they are the entry point into the Ducati world.

The large Streetfighter S has also been deleted. Instead, one day a naked Panigale will come?
Domenicali: That is not planned. We are happy that with the Monster 1200 and the Diavel we have two excellent offers in the naked bike segment. It would be easy to build a bare superbike, but it doesn’t fit our new philosophy. For example, we deliberately sacrificed some performance at the top of the new Monster in favor of drivability in everyday use. We believe that these aspects make the new model considerably more attractive than the extreme excellence of the great street fighters.
