MOTORRAD tested full-face helmets for 200 euros

But Father Frost miscalculated: We won’t let the cool guy spoil our helmet test. We are not! When nothing works on the moped, you just need your imagination. Draft is draft, and wind noise is wind noise. Even in a convertible.

Jorg Lohse, Klaus Herder

03/04/2010

One look at the lead photo of this story is enough and Mister Oberschlau has his opinion: “MOTORRAD’s are all wimps. They’re already driving their cars!” At least the second part of this statement is undisputed. Establish the truth of the first part “that of MOTORRAD” However, vehemently denied, because there were practical constraints: In order to be able to present a test of current helmet models to the inclined reader at the beginning of the season, such a story must be produced as promptly as possible. Specifically: The thing had to go through mid-February at the latest. Mid-February 2010 – wasn’t there something? Right: winter. Real winter. With double-digit minus degrees also during the day and with a closed snow cover on everything that is not called the motorway.

Eleven helmets in the price range of around 200 euros had to be tested in detail and operated visors and ventilation slides, as well as ensuring that there was no fogging and that there was no noise. The whole thing, of course, well above the recommended motorway speed. Do you have any idea how sensitively a helmet tester who drives a motorcycle can judge such things after two or three test drives in severe permafrost? Even.

So the MOTORRAD accessory uncles came up with something else and separated the test program. For part one, we went to the wind tunnel at the Polo company headquarters in Juchen. In the box, which, by the way, is also available to every potential customer for self-experiments, a large fan ensures a maximum of 120 km / h headwind. In the meantime, the driver sits on a Honda CBF 600 S and can concentrate on everything to do with wind noise, ventilation and aerodynamic behavior regardless of disturbing environmental influences. The second part of the test program made the back seat of a four-seater convertible (Citroën C3 Pluriel, see p. 116) the place of the action. A lovingly self-made booster seat ensured that the two test seaters really felt the full pack of cold headwinds – which explains the somewhat unconventional seating position seen in the photos.

Turbulence was of course still not absent, which made the matter quite comparable with the behavior behind motorcycle windshields and what together with the “clinically pure” Results from the wind tunnel gave a very good picture of the practical behavior of the helmets. The open-air tests in the convertible were driven up to speedometer 170 – more was not possible with the cute Citroën. What was originally intended as an elegant emergency solution turned out to be an ingenious move in the course of the test, because if you don’t have to concentrate on driving, you have much more time for intensive practical tests. Brutal breathing on the visor, an eternally long look over the shoulder, extreme angling and bending of the helmet, intense fingering of the (mostly unsuitable) ventilation slides – as a driver you prefer to refrain from such exercises in public road traffic, as a convertible backseat it was all easily doable and allowed even more precise Test statements.

In the third part of this practical test, however, the tried and tested program was run again and the helmets available in sizes M, L and XL were extensively tortured in the dry test. The four editors of the advice department put the helmets on and off, flipped visors, enjoyed themselves with the fasteners and checked the suitability of glasses. Lining and upholstery were down to the nitty-gritty, field of vision, fit – nothing went unchecked.
Almost nothing, because in contrast to a very large helmet test with laboratory tests (which will probably take place in MOTORRAD 14/2010 with the top-of-the-range helmet), MOTORRAD does not test the shock absorption values in a practical test. The tested helmets have all been successfully tested according to the current helmet standard ECE-R 22.05 and all come from reputable sources with traceable procurement channels. The current ECE standard was already met by helmets in the 100 euro class in previous MOTORRAD tests, but this says little about the actual suitability of a helmet in practice. In addition to passive safety (i.e. shock absorption), which is taken for granted by the ECE label, this is primarily determined by active safety.

And there are many positive things to say about it in the 200 euro class. In the cheap helmet test (MOTORRAD 19/2009) the best helmet barely managed “satisfying” And if problems with fit, wearing behavior and visor quality were the rule and not the exception, there are consistently decent goods for the money in the (lower) mid-range helmet. In the 200 league, manufacturers already have enough leeway to be able to deliver mature and well-equipped products, but do not yet have to pass on the high development and marketing costs of the top models. If you are looking for as much helmet as possible for little money and do not need a specific brand name to maintain your image, the 200 euro class offers an excellent price-performance ratio.

The table below and the product boxes show what came out of this test in the wind tunnel, on the convertible rear seat and in the MOTORRAD conference room. You can see here at the top of the page that there are subtle differences between personal favorites. On one thing the helmet testers were completely in agreement: The number with the car was absolutely nothing soft-egg-like. Do not you believe? No matter, drive from minus five degrees “that of MOTORRAD” motorcycle again. Promised!

Minus:

Visor stop somewhat coarse (only fourfold); Chinstrap padding a little too short; Chin ventilation practically ineffective; sometimes a bit lavish decor surcharges.

Conclusion:
Anyone who still has 200 euro helmets for “cheap” with the meaning of “made cheap” should treat yourself to the FG-15 – and then apologize. The Korean also convinces very critical minds, the test victory is unequivocal. Actually there is only one real wish for improvement: the double-D lock.

minus:
Slightly higher noise level than the FG-15; Ventilation slide much too small and with only moderate function (only a little on the forehead); sensitive surface with matt paintwork; sometimes a bit lavish decor surcharges.

Conclusion:
Slip in, feel good – with slight restrictions when putting on and taking off, this also applies to the thermoplastic sister model of the test winner. As a candy, there is an easy-to-use sun visor on top. The IS-16 confirms the high level HJC meanwhile manufactures.

To dye: Black matte black

Helmet shell: Carbon / Kevlar / fiberglass composite

Closure: Double-D

Plus:
Very easy to put on and take off; feels light; fine visor detent; good equipment; good suitability for glasses.

Minus:
Unsatisfactory fit, chin area and cheek pads too short, presses on the forehead; very sensitive to wind, wobbles from 120 km / h; from 60 km / h penetrating whistling noises; strong drafts from below, especially unpleasant on the eyes; Lining somewhat synthetic-scratchy; Visor twists when opening and cannot be opened far enough; Pinlock disc does not fit neatly, therefore there is a tendency to fog up in the lower area; Visor change relatively easy, but endangers fingernails; Ventilation slide without function.

Conclusion:
Looks very chic and appears light and airy after being comfortably put on. But from kilometer to kilometer, more and more weaknesses in detail become apparent: moderate aerodynamics, high noise level, fit that needs improvement and visor defects – there is much, much better in the 200 class.

MOTORRAD verdict: Sufficient

KBC Magnum

Helmet shell: Fiberglass / carbon / kevlar

Closure: Double-D

Country of Manufacture: China; ECE test mark: E 4 (Netherlands)

Replacement visors: clear / tinted / mirrored 27.95 / 27.95 / 29.95 euros

Furnishing: Breathing air deflector, wind deflector on the chin, visor with pinlock preparation, removable cheek pads and lining, helmet pouch

Plus:
Comfortable putting on and taking off; lies netral in the wind; The eye area remains draft-free.

Minus:
Chin strap is very far back and pinches; moderate fit, has a constricting effect and presses on the forehead; Lining very synthetic, looks something like “leatherette”; Visor twists when opening, ventilation position much too far; Visor dismantling a bit fiddly (installation easy); Ventilation slide much too small and without function; not suitable for glasses; Processing streaky (gap dimensions, visor with burr residue).

Conclusion:
In the 100 euro class it would probably have been enough for a decent midfield placement. In the heavily occupied 200-euro league only the penultimate place remains, because KBC is weak in many areas. Nothing dramatic, but practical details just look different.

MOTORRAD verdict: Sufficient

Plus:
Very easy to put on and take off; looks very light, sits comfortably and completely pressure-free; proper fit; lies neutral in the wind; Eye area draft-free; very large field of view; good suitability for glasses; extremely easy visor change; good workmanship.

Minus:
Chin strap is relatively far back and may press on the larynx; from 100 km / h slightly above average noise level; Visor locking imprecise; Ventilation slide large, but without function; Chinstrap too long (fluttering); Lining a little too synthetic and a little too soft; Cheek pads at risk of breaking when removing.

Conclusion:
It is of course always advisable to try on a helmet Marushin but very special. It sits rather freely on the neck (good for sports riders), but therefore the chin strap is placed relatively far back (bad for thick necks). If you don’t have any problems with that, you get a light and comfortable helmet.

Plus:
Very easy to put on and take off; very light, comfortable to wear; good fit; largely draft-free; easy change of visor; Changing the lining and upholstery is very easy; good suitability for glasses; very attractive long-term offer price, cheap visors.

Minus:
Slightly sensitive to wind, wobbles clearly from 110 km / h, restless when looking over the shoulder; Noise level rather above average; Sun visor does not retract completely, field of vision restricted; Chinstrap padding much too short; Ventilation slide too small and almost without function.

Conclusion:
Perfect is different, but the perceived (and measured) lightness and the good fit make the carbon discounter attractive. Very fast sports riders will be disturbed by the not fully developed aerodynamics and the upwardly restricted field of vision, but it is a hot tip for muscle bike pilots.

Very good ratchet lock; full, even seat, good fit; Lining and padding very comfortable; lies neutrally in the wind, draft-free; low noise level; extremely easy visor change; practical, well-defined visor detent; suitable for glasses.

Minus:
Putting on and taking off a bit tedious; Ventilation slide too small and stiff, chin part ventilation ineffective; matt surface very sensitive to dirt; Basic model a bit poorly equipped, decor surcharges are quite heavy.

Conclusion:
Fits like a sneaker, so it is worth the effort to put it on and take it off. Many absolutely practical details make it clear that developers with a lot of helmet know-how were at work here. The good aerodynamics and the freedom from drafts make the N 85 also interesting for full-throttle junkies.

Replacement visors: clear / tinted / mirrored 39.95 / 39.95 / 49.95 euros

Furnishing: Breathing air deflector, wind deflector on the chin, anti-fog visor, inflatable cheek pads, removable cheek pads and lining, helmet pouch

Plus:
Chinstrap padding sufficiently long; Changing the visor is extremely easy; Forehead ventilation works well; only minimal drafts from below, eyes remain draft-free.

Minus:
Very narrow entry, putting on and taking off very uncomfortable; fits super tight, the inflatable cheek pads are rather superfluous; Fit nevertheless rather mediocre; Visor does not open far enough, but ventilation position far too wide; Lining somewhat synthetic-scratchy; Chin part ventilation ineffective; Reinstallation of the cheek pads quite fiddly; only suitable for glasses to a very limited extent; stinks when new.

Conclusion:
The pump function is a nice toy, but not really necessary. Slimmer skulls also fit in, stubborn heads with and without a pump will almost certainly have massive problems with their fit. In terms of aerodynamics and noise level, the helmet does not allow itself any major weaknesses.

plus:
Comfortable putting on and taking off; Sater, even fit, nothing presses – successful fit; torsion-resistant visor with tight detent; very easy change of visor, good suitability for glasses; good equipment and workmanship.

Minus:
From 100 km / h slightly louder than the better models, from 120 km / h slight restlessness when looking over the shoulder; Ventilation slider too small and without function; some drafts from below; Visor ventilation position too far; Ventilation slide much too small and without function.

Conclusion:
Sits tight, looks very valuable, is well equipped. Drivers with a Mike Kruger nose should definitely try the integrated sun visor before buying. The part works with the dynamics of a guillotine. At most, weevils are disturbed by the somewhat higher noise level.

Replacement visors: clear / tinted / mirrored 59.95 / 59.95 / 69.95 euros

Furnishing: Wind deflector on the chin, anti-fog visor, removable cheek pads and lining, helmet pouch

Plus:
Chin strap well padded and easy to use; good aerodynamics; low noise level; comfortable lining; absolutely tight and fog-free visor; large ventilation slider.

Minus:
Size information is incorrect, is much too small; Difficult to put on and take off, as the helmet shell cannot be pulled apart using the chin strap; too lush cheek padding presses the face together; Visor does not open far enough, ventilation position too wide; relatively high drafts from below, slightly drafty in the eye area; not suitable for glasses.

Conclusion:
You love or you hate the boss. the “permanently closed” Chin straps and the lush padding make putting on and taking off a torture, but those who have got used to it (which not everyone will be able to do) will be happy about the quiet and aerodynamically successful helmet, especially at high speeds.

Plus:
Easy to use helmet lock; satisfactory aerodynamics; Visor closes well; acceptable noise level; proper paintwork; fair pricing (unit prices for decors and visors).

Minus:
Uncomfortable putting on and taking off; very unsatisfactory fit, everywhere “too short” (Chin part, lower end); Lining uncomfortably slippery; Chinstrap padding too short; Visor ventilation position too far; Ventilation slide without function; Drafts from below and also slightly above the eyes; severely restricted suitability for glasses; Visor can only be changed with a tool (key included); rather poor equipment.

Conclusion:
30 years ago it would have been a decent helmet, but the massive weaknesses in the fit mean that the Chinese Italian is no longer up-to-date. Three out of four testers chose that Vemar to the clear test loser, but maybe there is the head out there that fits.

Conclusion

Product test: full-face helmets for 200 euros

Drawing: archive

Final score of the helmet test.

This is what the helmet tester wants: clear results and a wide-spread test field. The two HJC models together with the Nolan the top trio. Shark, Marushin and Nexo are by far the good, also worthwhile midfield. Behind it, the air is getting very thin, but if the (special offer) price and above all the fit on your own head are right, one of the five helmets placed at the end of the test field can become a very private favorite, because there is no total failure to complain about. The Uvex in particular deserves a try-on chance.
