Gloves for cold days

Bright to cool to wet and cold? On Germany’s highest pass road, twelve pairs of gloves played in changeable conditions, which is best for cold days.

Thorsten Dentges

Arctic, Iceman, Polar ?? Product names to tell the buyer: “Come on, we’re going through the winter. Freezing temperatures, snow, icy wind, it doesn’t matter, I’ll keep you warm!” But such crazy advertising poetry is often as removed from reality as many winter days are from winter. In contrast to the namesake, some product developers are obviously already taking global warming into account: where it is not freezing cold, you only need moderately warm gloves. A fallacy, at least with the Polar model from Reusch You can neither drive safely nor comfortably through winter, not even on days with significantly above zero degrees. At the latest when it rains on the motorway or when the weather suddenly changes on a tour over alpine passes, you get annoyed with frozen fingers about every badly invested euro.

It becomes critical at outside temperatures below ten degrees if the hands are not packed enough. This by no means means that gloves for cold days can only be found as accessories for cold store workers. Thickly padded models keep you warm, but prevent you from having a secure grip on the motorcycle handlebars as well as the controls, and do so in the event of a fall “non-specialist” Winter mittens are also not a good figure.

MOTORRAD therefore recommends five-finger models for the cold season as well, which offer maximum freedom of movement and thus active safety. Alpinestars obviously sees it the same way and sends a perfectly rain-protecting, sporty, crisp all-rounder into the race, defined “winter” but rather Italian. With theirs, BMW proves that everything can be brought under one roof or glove “Per winter 2” are not just correct in terms of their names. Good insulation, absolutely wind- and waterproof and still offering a safe feeling for switches and levers ?? even longer motorcycle tours are fun even on cold days.

This is how MOTORRAD tests – air numbers and water features

Product test: gloves

mps photo studio

Driving in the dry, logging in the rain – and vice versa.

The twelve pair of gloves were tested according to a uniform scheme and rated in the following categories:

Wearing comfort / fit (maximum 25 points):
During a clearly defined test round in Hochallgau, the testers literally learned how the gloves were worn. How do you operate switches and fittings on mountain passes with many tight hairpin bends and bends, how does the air conditioning inside the glove behave in rapidly changing weather conditions, and any bulges or creases have a disruptive effect if you have to brake and brake frequently?

Security (maximum 25 points):
Each glove was carefully examined for its protective function. Are there upholstery, protectors and double layers of material in areas at risk of falling, and are the materials used there trustworthy? What is the situation with the scraper protection?

Processing / equipment (maximum 10 points):
What do I get for my money? Are proven materials from well-known suppliers (Gore, Schoeller, etc.) used, how high is the leather used? Are there useful equipment features such as visor wipers, reflectors or adjustable gauntlets??

Moisture protection (maximum 20 points):
The water resistance was tested on four test samples per model. Two specimens had to be immersed in the immersion bath, which quickly reveals smaller and larger leaks, the other two were filled with water up to the cuff and had to prove that no water could escape.

Isolation (maximum 20 points):
Apart from driving on passes, the testers checked the insulation and wind protection at temperatures around ten degrees at higher speeds on the motorway.

On a lofty pass, winter gloves are also useful in good weather.

A test field with light and shadow. Except for the recommended Probiker and Germas none of the cheaper offers under 70 euros manage to get to the more expensive candidates equipped with proven and expensive materials. However, you shouldn’t skimp on your choice, especially for hands that are sensitive to cold. In this case, it is worth investing in top products, especially since there are no outliers in accident protection in the front test field. Pleasing: comfort and moisture protection can convince most of the candidates.

Problems with climate membranes – the wet makers: heated grips and heating

Watch out! Heated grips can create significantly higher temperatures than body temperature of 37 degrees Celsius directly on the outside of the glove. In this case, the partial pressure outside is higher than inside the glove, for example if the heated grips get wet while driving in the rain. Due to the increased external pressure, water vapor molecules migrate through the membrane ?? just in instead of out. This effect is called “reverse transmission”. Something similar can happen when taking a break in the dining room if the gloves are placed on the heater to dry. The moisture from the soaked outer shell presses into the inner glove, which has been dry until then. So it is better to stuff your gloves with newspaper, which absorbs most of the moisture that penetrates.

Physiological basics – hands good, all good

Ten degrees and sunshine. A beautiful autumn day, just right for an excursion. The motorcyclist thinks. But what do his hands say about it?

One chugs leisurely along the country road. But when the engine has just warmed up, your fingers start to freeze. The reason: the so-called wind chill effect. Even at 50 km / h and an outside temperature of ten degrees, the perceived temperature drops to below zero. The exposed hands lie like oil coolers in the wind, and the fingers in particular are even more sensitive to the cold, their blood flow is 20 times higher. But unlike motor oil, the blood should not be cooled down by the wind. Below the comfort range for the hands (between 22 and 32 degrees), body heat is concentrated on the center of the body so as not to impair the function of vital organs and the brain. The result is a slower blood flow towards the extremities and the first signs of freezing become noticeable. From seven degrees can ?? depending on sensitivity to cold? Pain in the hands occurs. After prolonged hypothermia, the normal body temperature drops to 37 degrees Celsius, and the body tries ?? through goosebumps? to reduce its heat-radiating surface, one begins to shiver, becomes increasingly restless, hunger becomes noticeable.

So starting from the fingertips, a general feeling of discomfort spreads when it’s cold? dangerous on the motorcycle because driving mistakes can occur! Even level-headed country road cruising at a maximum of 100 km / h can quickly lead to symptoms of hypothermia on cold days; on the motorway this is usually the case after a few minutes. In addition, dexterity drops drastically from ten degrees downwards. With a screw, for example, you can only handle it half as well, complex activities such as brake metering with the hand lever are severely impaired. It is therefore advisable not only to pack your hands well in the freezing cold. And observe one basic rule: only slip into the glove with absolutely dry hands! Physiologically speaking, the hands occupy an extraordinarily large area of the brain. So hands good, everything good? Not entirely true, because in addition to warm hands, the center of the body should also be in the comfort area. An insulating vest ensures that heat is transported back to the extremities and thus also acts indirectly as protection against cold hands. Conclusion: windproof, insulated gloves, a well-warmed body center as well as a frequent tea break and an autumn or winter tour, nothing stands in the way.

Larger calibers

On really cold winter days with snow and frost, even the gloves rated as very good in the test reach their limits. What helps then?

Practical: heating with power supply via battery, which saves the annoying connection to the on-board network.

Five fingers in conventional motorcycle gloves, surrounded by the wind, are the Achilles’ heel when it is really cold. In freezing temperatures, three-finger gloves, so-called pig paws, help. Little and ring fingers as well as middle and index fingers are each stuck in a glove finger, together they radiate more heat, and this can be dammed up in a larger air cushion. After a period of getting used to it, ?? different from mittens? Switches and levers on the motorcycle are a bit limited, but operate sufficiently well.

In a practical test, designated winter models such as the Nordkap x-treme from Dane (89 euros, via Motoport) proved to be particularly suitable for the cold. The ?? tinkering solution ?? with the seamless bonding neoprene covers from Hein Gericke (40 euros) works more as additional protection for cold, wet days just above freezing point. Highly recommended and also inexpensive: thin inner gloves made of silk or synthetic fiber as an additional warmth pad. If the insulated body heat alone is not enough, gloves with heating wires are the last resort. Solutions with a battery integrated in the cuff, such as the prototype shown below, are interesting “magma” of hero.
