Pull-on rain suits for motorcyclists are almost a shadowy existence in times of fully equipped textile suits. But the unreserved trust in the textile clothes is not entirely justified. Yes, it will probably hold tight, will not let water through. But she takes it up every now and then, soaking up herself. And torments the driver with excess weight. So a rain suit comes in handy. Conclusion: Nowhere top, but good everywhere. The iXS-Kombi was only the gray mouse in the test. It is first-class workmanship and holds reliably tight, but should be crisper and lighter.

Conclusion: Very light, easy to stow away and a sporty fit. But the wearing comfort without lining is uncomfortable, the trousers are difficult to put on with boots. Otherwise a very solid performance.

Conclusion: Decisive weak point of the Buse Aqua is the low collar. In the practical test, water penetrated here, causing the chest and neck area to become wet. I like the rest of the station wagon.

• incredibly strong reflective performance, even in daylight
• very soft, comfortable collar with fleece trim

Negative:

• oversized lining, partly hanging out and soaking up with water
• very heavy and difficult to stow as there are no panniers

Conclusion: The look is impressive, the material actually dense. It’s a shame that the mesh lining is too generously dimensioned. If it comes into contact with water, it wicks moisture to the arms, legs and upper body.

Two test winners? Yes, because despite different approaches, both achieve top marks. Both have easily accessible pockets and a breathable membrane that FLM Also scores with a protective hood and a useful connection zipper.

In the end, two products secured the test victory in the rain suit comparison.

The Held, on the other hand, is ahead in terms of pack size, stowage options and the tendency to flutter. There were no leaky rain suits in the test, if water penetrated, it was because the collar was too tight or the lining was protruding. So the Bering station wagon, with its satisfactory rating, still receives our recommendation. It renounces luxury, but still holds tight.

Not an easy task for manufacturers

The lightest specimens in this test weigh a mere 540 grams; packed, they take up little space on the journey, just waiting to be quickly unfolded. But when is that? Already at the first dark cloud? Or is it better to wait until the first drops really fall? Whoops, you’re wet. You’d rather have it right away … On the other hand: If you fumble into your rain gear too early, it’s no better. Wet with sweat on the inside and extremely fluttery on the outside, if the lack of rain still allows high speed. That doesn’t happen with the perfect rain suit: In an emergency, you can put it on quickly, thanks to long zippers and large openings, you can also put clunky motorcycle boots on. Equipped with a climate membrane, it protects against wind and water on the outside, and transports the moisture from the inside to the outside. Sweat cannot collect in the rain suit, which is often decried as a plastic bag. At least ideally. But in practice it actually exists?

The rain suits in the test did a mostly decent job.

In any case, it is not easy for the manufacturers: Nobody can know what the customer will be wearing under the station wagon afterwards. Crisp leather? Casual cruiser clothes? Lush textile combination? The perfect rain suit, it always fits exactly over it, is nowhere too tight, but does not flutter even at high speed. And when the worst is over, the rain gear has to dry off quickly and be stowed away easily and in a space-saving manner in the luggage or under the bench. A small bag of your own would be extremely helpful for this.

In fact, the manufacturers are working to meet the high demands of motorcyclists. Not an easy job and not necessarily inexpensive, which initially amazes many bikers. After all, it’s primarily a bit of plastic. Or? Well, on closer inspection it is no longer surprising that the cheapest test copy in this field costs 90 euros, the most expensive almost 200 euros. A lot of money on the one hand, good quality and equipment on the other: If you compare the rain suits specially developed for motorcyclists with simple overcoats for everyday use, the surcharge is quickly put into perspective. But does it now exist, the perfect rain suit? Hm, at least we didn’t find them in this test, but we can identify and recommend several very good models. Because even the protective suits rated “good” or “satisfactory” mostly do a very decent job. You can read the details on this on the following pages.

There is also a suitable rain cover for the feet.

At this point, a few general hints: Normally, every rain suit convinces with its core property, the waterproofness. At least where the outer material is not interrupted by poorly processed seams, fasteners or pockets. You have to pay more attention to such negligence when buying! The mesh lining used in many suits makes it comfortable to wear, but it is very easy to get tangled up with Velcro fasteners on gloves or boots. If that annoys you and if you do not attach great importance to wearing comfort, it is better to use the products without lining. Incidentally, there can be breathability even without a specially designated climate membrane. Because both polyester and polyamide, the two most commonly used synthetic fibers for rain suits, may or may not be breathable, depending on how they are processed. Even a PU coating as a permanent impregnation does not allow any automatic conclusions to be drawn about its performance. Therefore, as is so often the case: Try out the rain suit. Not that you are suddenly out in the rain – and in an emergency you are no longer completely watertight.

Out of competition: the Amazon bestseller

At 89.80 euros, the Bering station wagon is the cheapest rain cover in the test, while the Held is just under 200 euros.

The Amazon rain suit is only partially suitable for motorcycling.

Wouldn’t the Amazon bestseller in the field of rain suits be a cheap alternative? For less than 20 euros, the Result R095X makes a good first impression, workmanship and rain protection are right.

However, it is not made for motorcycling: it is difficult to put on with boots, and there is no support on the bench. Their fit is rather generous. The surcharge for motorcycle rain suits is worth it.

This is how MOTORRAD tests

Clearly, a rain suit has to do one thing above all: hold tight, even at the end of the world and in torrential rain. That’s why each of the station wagons had to endure a simulated rain shower. Since the station wagons not only have to work while standing or walking, but also in the typical sitting position on the motorcycle, irrigation was carried out on a Triumph Street Triple RS – initially only while standing.

In the simulated rain shower, the rain suits had to prove how dense they really are.

This made it possible to guarantee reproducible test conditions. Each station wagon was fired at from four different positions over the same period of eight minutes (first from the front, then from above, and finally from the sides). If water penetrated, the testers could report this directly. The second practical part took place under real conditions in Scotland: Sudden, unpredictable rain, dressing under time pressure and stowing in the suitcase or under the seat provided impressions from everyday motorcycle life. Back in Germany, the ten station wagons still had to endure tests on material strength, tear resistance and resistance to perforation. In order to check whether the combination was “waterproof, windproof, breathable”, the waterproofness of the material (apart from seams and zippers) and air permeability were tested in the water bath. Without evaluation, but for better comparability of the fits, the arm and leg lengths were measured for size XL.

Tips and tricks – the best protection against rain

Functional underwear

First of all: There is a risk of moisture not only from the outside! So that the rain suit doesn’t turn into a sweat bag despite the climate membrane, you should wear suitable functional underwear underneath.

Waterproof boots
