But as unanimous as the scene is about the qualities of the travel enduro, the criticism of the series tires is unanimous. the Dunlop D 610 disappoint with moderate steering precision and wobbly steering behavior. MOTORRAD did not want to wait that long and therefore preferred the tire recommendation. The problem: The tire dimensions of the Honda (90 / 90-21, 150/70 R 18) limit the choice considerably. Currently, Dunlop only offer original equipment as well Continental Alternatives. In this case, we did not test the Heidenau K 60 Scout, which is more off-road oriented, or the Conti TKC 80. These tires will be made up for with the – hopefully expanded – tire range for the Honda Africa Twin in the interim balance. Our tire recommendation for the Honda Africa Twin, dimensions: 90 / 90-21 and 150/70 R 18.

First of all, the standard tires can please with good straight-line stability and easy turning. But when the vehicle is tilted, the front becomes very wobbly and must be kept on course with counter pressure on the handlebars. The front tire also tends to stamp on bumps and wanders to the outside of the bend.

The cause is probably to be found in the low level of self-damping of the tire, which is also responsible for the diffuse feedback. The bottom line is that Honda is doing the Africa Twin a disservice with these original tires. Small consolation: The grip reserves are okay in dry conditions, but the Trailmax D 610 behave treacherously in wet conditions.

Conclusion: Good straight-line stability, but wobbly steering behavior and poor grip in wet conditions.

Dunlop Trailsmart.

With the Trailsmart, Dunlop offers an in-brand alternative to the original tires of the Africa Twin. Positive: When it is wet, the Trailsmart has greater liability reserves than the D 610. The feedback is also more transparent than that of the series tires. However, the advantages of the Trailsmart on the Honda Africa Twin have already been dealt with.

In an inclined position, it acts even more wobbly than the standard tires. He demands even higher counter pressure on the handlebars to hold the line. The greater the incline, the more pronounced this character trait is. In the latest MOTORRAD travel enduro tire test (11/2016), the Dunlop also had the highest wear values.

Conclusion: Okay when wet, otherwise moderate. Not a good alternative to the standard Dunlop.

Continental Trail Attack 2.

After the first few meters, the Conti builds enormous trust. First-class feedback and very neutral handling characterize the Trail Attack 2. It also steers in neutrally and provides a good feeling for the ground down to the deepest slopes. Only the relatively high level of wear and tear and the moderate wet grip dampen the enthusiasm – but only a little.

Conclusion: A lot of confidence, a lot of driving pleasure – the current tire recommendation for the Honda Africa Twin.

Continental TKC 70

Continental TKC 70.

The TKC 70 is designed to be a little more off-road than the Trail Attack 2. The higher proportion of negative profile also affects steering precision. With good grip and clear feedback, the Conti is still in top shape. Only on extreme slopes does it appear more wobbly than the Trail Attack 2. When it is wet, the TKC offers more grip.

Conclusion: A little better off-road, a little worse on the road than the Trail Attack 2.
