Honda NC 700 S..

There is only good news, which is the exception in this day and age. If you have always dreamed of getting your motorcycle license and riding a new bike into the sunset, now is the time. With the NC 700 S, Honda not only offers a very good motorcycle for an affordable price, but also ensures that almost everyone can pay this price. The calculation is simple: if you get your motorcycle license now, Honda will subsidize you with a ten percent discount (limited to 1000 euros) on a new machine. In the specific case of the NC 700 S, which costs 5755 euros including transfer costs, the discount is 575.50 euros. But you don’t have to put the 5179.50 euros on the table right away. With the “Half paid, completely enthusiastic” campaign, Honda is offering 50/50 financing for all bikers. For the NC 700 S you only have to leaf through the counter in our calculation example 2589.75 euros and then drive home in a crisp new vehicle. The other half is not due until 24 months later, there is no interest. This offer applies to all Honda motorcycles.

The attractive financing option and the fact that the NC made a consistently good impression in the tests have meant that the 700 series will hardly be available in Germany until the end of June. “The first models sold like nothing,” says Oliver Franz, press spokesman for Honda Europe North. But supplies are already on their way and the stores will be replenished from the end of June. “We plan to sell 1500 copies of the NC 700 S and the sister model NC 700 X in 2012,” says Franz, naming the goal.

But how good is the NC 700 S really? How do the rather poor 48 HP perform in everyday life, but especially in direct comparison with good used machines that can be had for the same money? To find out, MOTORRAD went to a few dealers with the NC 700 S and rode a couple of bikes in direct comparison that cost about the same and are similar in terms of requirements: sitting upright, moderate performance, easy handling.

Honda NC 700 S with passenger.

Every time I switched, I noticed how powerful the 700cc Honda drive is at low and medium speeds. In addition, there is its massaging pulsation, which the twin transmits to its driver and which is consistently perceived as pleasant. The drive does not produce expressions of life in any speed range that are perceived as annoying. The designers achieved this by using a crankshaft with a 90 degree crank pin offset in combination with a 270 degree ignition offset. Above all, however, the twin produces its 48 hp realistically, in such a way that it can be used for everyday use. To stick with this example: first gear – the NC achieves its maximum performance at 6000 rpm, which corresponds to 50 km / h. A 600 Hornet can only enjoy its 106 hp at 12,300 rpm, which corresponds to 90 km / h. The screeching of a high-revving four-cylinder is perhaps a pleasure for lovers of high-revving engines. But not for everyone else. Also interesting in this context: Up to 6000 rpm, the performance of the NC drive is always higher than the performance of the used machines used (see diagram). Based on a maximum speed of 100 km / h on the country road, the engine turns just 3500 rpm in sixth gear, lifts 63 Newton meters and is thus in the range of its optimal torque output.

The four-cylinder Hornet turns 5500 rpm under the same conditions and pushes just 47 Newton meters. To experience the same dynamics, you have to drive at least one, if not two, gears down on the other bikes. The possibility of low-speed driving with the NC stress-free also contributes to the low fuel consumption. But the comfortable, economical NC motor is only half the rent. “It’s the first time I’ve seen scooter riders switch to a motorcycle,” says Volker Thumm, managing director of Speer-Racing, an authorized Honda dealer. “The storage compartment is just perfect. And when the NC version with the dual clutch gearbox is available, we will probably get a few large scooter drivers to switch. These guys don’t want to change gear at all. ”You wouldn’t earn much from this motorcycle, because the good quality and the long 12,000 service intervals mean that NC models are not often in the workshop, but it’s always worth something, new customers to get. “Satisfied customers recommend the products to others,” he says. “That is ultimately worth more than the quick friction.”

Interesting in the market study: used motorcycles from the EU can easily be registered in Germany after a TuV approval. It is also the case that this comparison showed a Honda Hornet from Italy and a 650 Suzuki from England, which were offered by two different dealers. Something else about the used bikes that were ridden, all of which were in a decent, sometimes even mint condition: Many buyers value the two-year guarantee that is available on new vehicles. The Limbacher company countered here & Limbacher from Echterdingen: In addition to the normal, legally required one-year warranty, you can get a lifelong guarantee on used machines (with some restrictions) for an extra 490 or 690 euros. This guarantee can also be obtained on new vehicles. Another good news.

Vmax: 160 km / h
0-100 km / h: 5.5 sec
Weight: 215 kg
Seat height: 800 mm
Consumption: 3.5 l / 100 km

Everyone is excited. The MOTORRAD testers, because the 700s are practically undefeated, the dealers, because the NC sells like sliced bread and also attracts new customers to their shops, and last but not least, the machine drivers. Because for the money, especially with such a cheap financing model (see scrolling text), you can’t get a new bike anywhere else. Above all, not one that perfectly meets everyday demands: low consumption, great light, integrated storage compartment, optimal seating position for big and small. In addition, the driving dynamics aspects are also right. Because the tightly tuned chassis of the NC never shows any nakedness, even when trotting quickly over the home stretch, and the ABS-assisted stoppers do their job perfectly. Beginners in particular will like the integral brake: with one step on the foot brake lever, the front brake is also activated – enormous deceleration. Ultimately, the two-cylinder engine also inspires, because it lets its muscles play exactly where you really need them: at low and medium revs. That just feels good.

Offer 2: BMW F 650 GS

BMW F 650 GS.

kw / PS: 37/50
km: 3159
EZ: 05/2007
Price: 5780 €
Vmax: 170 km / h
0-100 km / h: 5.3 sec
Weight: 202 kg
Seat height: 740 mm
Consumption: 3.6 l / 100 km

You have to take a closer look at this BMW. Because the speedometer and tires alone reveal that this motorcycle was moved at all. “This GS was ridden by a petite woman,” says Manfred Rzadca. Which in turn might explain why the F 650 is lower. Despite its five years, the BMW looks like new. Due to its features and its extremely low consumption, it seems to be a real alternative to the NC 700 S. Sitting test: You sit lower than on the NC and much more upright, more in than on the motorcycle. However, the lowering does not only have advantages. It reduces the lean angle and also reduces driving comfort a little – the rear shock absorber is shorter at the factory. The two hp weaker Honda twin also looks superior to the single in every situation, is more agile, more powerful and more balanced.

Offer 3: Honda CBF 600 S

Consumption: 4.6 l / 100 km

The new price of the CBF 600 S is currently 7,640 euros. Hardly anything has changed in terms of equipment in the last three years. The used vehicle from Zweirad Trinkner has two previous owners and is still in great shape. Tires, paint, chain set, brakes – everything is okay. As with the NC, the ABS-supported combined braking system CBS is used here. But despite the double disc at the front, the braking effect in everyday life is not much better than with the NC. The main stand and pannier racks are installed on Trinkner’s used vehicles, but the suitcases are not included in the offer. “The previous owner continues to use them on his new bike,” explains Achim Trinkner. When you switch from the 700 to the 600 Honda, you immediately feel at home. As on the NC, you sit really well here, handlebars and footrests are optimally positioned, you can see in the mirrors as well as in those of the NC. Handling and steering behavior are great, and despite the fairing, they do nothing compared to the NC 700. The four-cylinder also does its job well. The NC motor seems more powerful around the bottom, but the CBF drive is at least as much fun. While the 700 twin has a more massively pulsating effect and is therefore extremely relaxing, the CBF four-cylinder lends a solid boost from mid-rev.

Offer 4: Honda Hornet 600

Honda Hornet 600.

0-100 km / h: 3.5 sec

Seat height: 800 mm
Consumption: 4.6 l / 100 km

Actually, says Volker Thumm, the Hornet is designed for a completely different type of driver than the NC 700 S. “The Hornet is designed to be much sportier. In addition, it has more than twice as much power as the NC, ”says Thumm. Nevertheless: If a customer enters the shop for 5500 euros, he may be tempted … Because the five year old Honda shines in perfect condition, even the tires (Metzeler Roadtec Z8) are brand new. A comparison drive immediately corroborates Thumm’s statement. Where the NC-Twin shines with pressure and power, the high-performance four-cylinder derived from the CBR 600 RR is tired. It only really turns on in the area that the NC doesn’t even have: above 7000 rpm. This has the following effect in everyday operation: In order to ride the house route with the Hornet StVO-compliant just as casually as with the NC, you always need 4,000 more tours. This greed for revs is not for leisurely drivers. Although the Hornet is more manageable and brakes just as vehemently as the NC, the machine imported from Italy does not have an ABS. The suspension setup is better with the Hornet (new price: 8590 euros including ABS), because the spring elements respond more sensitively and are also puncture-proof.

Offer 5: Suzuki Bandit 650 S

The Limbacher company & Limbacher is the largest motorcycle dealer in Germany. Over 1200 vehicles (new and used) are currently bustling around on 10,000 m². Here you can also find motorcycles from all EU countries. The 650 that was being driven originally came from England. In addition to the top case, main stand and crash bar, an alarm system is also installed and enhances the bike. But six years of island cruising have also left their mark: rust film and small scratches can be found in some places, and the deceleration is absolutely poor in direct comparison to the braking performance of the NC 700 S. The stoppers appear blunt, the brake lever has a spongy pressure point. The wind and weather protection provided by the cladding is conceptually better than with the NC. The additional weight of 32 kilograms is noticeable both when maneuvering and when driving. Compared to the Honda twin, the 650 four-cylinder looks quite listless in the lower and middle speed range.

Offer 6: Yamaha XJ6 Diversion

Price: 5890 €
Vmax: 205 km / h
0-100: 3.9 sec
Weight: 221 kg
Seat height: 800 mm
Consumption: 4.1 l / 100 km

It is an isolated case, regrettable at that, says Domaier when asked. A caring husband and R1 owner had the offer Yamaha XJ6 bought for his wife as a surprise gift. She was surprised, but not really pleased. Although she has a driver’s license, she preferred to ride on the back of it instead of herself. The machine, which normally costs 7795 euros, found its way into Motorcity’s second-hand range. So a bargain. Compared to the NC 700, it is even easier to steer and easier to handle. In addition, the diversion attracts with better wind protection. The brakes are also great. The suspension set-up is a little softer than that of the Honda. So the Yamaha offers more comfort on bumpy roads. Whereby the spring elements of the NC clearly offer more reserves in pillion operation. In a direct comparison, the four-cylinder looks a little slow to start despite its increased output of 29 hp, as it requires more speeds due to its design.

Conclusion

At first, I would not have thought that the NC 700 S would fascinate me with its rather poor performance. But the bike is great and the performance is completely sufficient. The inspection intervals are long, the financing attractive – what more could you want? The only reasons to ultimately buy a used machine for the sum are if you place greater value on more performance, a different brand or a different styling. But those are good reasons. It was just as surprising for me to see on the research tour how many good motorcycles are available on the used market for as little as 2000 euros. You no longer need riches to live out your passion for motorcycles.
