Black Bike Week in Atlantic Beach is a bizarre show of technical and human possibility. The spectrum of development seems limitless.

It all started in the small town of Atlantic Beach in the late 1970s. The local beach was the only one in South Carolina where African Americans were tolerated until the segregation ended. Since then, dark-skinned bikers have been meeting here on Memorial Day weekend. Meanwhile, the “Bike Week” is the fourth largest biker meeting in the USA. Half a million black motorcyclists are turning the beaches of South Carolina into huge party miles. They come from everywhere. Boss from Mississippi says: “This is not a normal biker meeting like Daytona or Sturgis, this is a phenomenon.” He predicts that “Bike Week” will soon be the biggest meeting in the world. Could be true when you see how many motorbikes can be seen and heard here. Of course there are many “excavators” with gigantic front wheels, insanely high handlebars and wild suitcases, but no other motorcycle species is as common as Japanese sports machines.

On closer inspection, Black Bike Week is heaven for the Suzuki GSX 1300 R, the legendary Hayabusa. What used to be the fastest production motorcycle in the world can be seen in the most unimaginable stages of conversion: each has at least one extra-long swing arm and a flashy custom paintwork. Some are incredibly low, others tuned up to the tips of their hair with turbo and nitrous oxide. Why is the “Busa” so popular? Kevin from Alabama knows the answer: “Because it’s easy to get, easy to drive, easy to modify, and because it’s damn fast.” Okay, not that you could drive fast anywhere here. There’s way too much traffic for that, too many cops.
Everything has to be illuminated
It’s more about “seeing and being seen”. That is why not only the outfit of the bikes but also that of the rider is important. The total work of art, so to speak. One has the impression that a large part of the worldwide existing chrome and all supplies of flashy paint colors are combined here. Real artists have let off steam on the glossy or matt surfaces of the bikes, sprinkling an enormous variety of images. Can you think of something like this without mind-expanding substances? And the Americans, no matter what skin color, seem to have another quirk: Everything has to be illuminated. Or heated. Normal is not possible.
At least 40 percent of the drivers who roll down Ocean Boulevard are women. The number of “female only” bike clubs is increasing. Shuggababe, President of NC Divas: “Women see other women drive, they like what they see and get infected. Some like it slow, but we drive fast busas. “Isis from North Carolina, who drives a purple Hayabusa with pink rims, adds,” I started riding a motorcycle because it was therapy. When I open the gas on the open highway, my mind is freed. ”Harley rider Clarence from Georgia says he’s been coming for years. “Sometimes the event is peaceful, sometimes violence breaks out.” But that has less and less to do with skin color.
