A quantya of consolation

The future belongs to electric vehicles? is it [called. However, many fear the end of their favorite leisure time. The Quantya suggests that it doesn’t have to be that way and that the future may be even more fun. A real consolation for people who are afraid of the future.

A quantya of consolation

Sssssss ?? actually nothing more can be heard. The wind, the low hum from the electric motor and the rolling noise of the tires on the smooth asphalt are the only things that penetrate the driver’s ear through the helmet. Every now and then a whimpering rear tire plays a familiar, cherished melody. But it remains a solo. The timpani and trumpets are silent. No screeching engine, no roaring exhaust. Is that tomorrow’s fun? PS got to the bottom of this question and drove to KOM Enterprises, the Germany importer of the Quantya, in the Bavarian countryside. We wanted to scare the enduro version of the electric bike over the tables and through residents in a so-called Quantya Park near Traunstein. But the approaching winter turned the area into a viscous puddle. The in-house karting hall offered shelter. A huge advantage of the Quantya is obvious there: no exhaust gas clogs the mucous membranes. Even after several hours of test drive in the hall, neither the senses nor the air are fogged.

And how does it go? First you have to change something. The Quantya does not have a clutch. The lever for the left hand operates the rear brake. “For the youngsters, it’s like their Playstation”, explains KOM boss Hans Eder this arrangement. “You do everything with your hands.” A braking drift with the left? Anyone can do that with the Quantya. No clutch, no transmission, the Quantya drives everything in one gear. This makes it especially easier for those who do not get from the motorcycle to the electric bike. But be careful! If the Quantya is armed with the ignition key, you should use the “Standing mode” Keep your fingers off the throttle. No engine noise warns the rider that it is ready for operation. The finest pluck on the throttle lets the Quantya jump away immediately, because the full torque is already available when driving, in accordance with the characteristics of electric motors.

Driving behavior

Operating hours and battery charge are displayed under a cover. While driving, slight jerking heralds the near end of the energy.

The missing gas play changes while driving. Depending on the speed being driven, it is now necessary to open the throttle grip again after closing until the resistance for more power has been overcome accordingly. This is not rocket science, it happens almost instinctively and makes the Quantya easy to control. The feeling of sitting is known from supermotos and especially crossers. The driving technique is accordingly. Sitting far forward, you push the electric bike around the corners with flared elbows on the wide handlebars and take the inside leg forward. The Quantya reacts nervously to such maneuvers. No wonder, it likes quite narrow enduro tires (from: 2.75 x 19″, h .: 3.50 x 18″); Supermoto bikes are now available. The bike is also extremely narrow and light: the StVZO enduro version weighs 95 kg. The performance fits the narrow kart track. 75 percent of a maximum of 17 hp are approved: this can be adjusted using a laptop according to the route and driving ability; up to just over 70 km / h are possible. The more steam is squeezed out of the Quantya, the shorter the lithium-polymer battery will last? logical. In our case it was over after about 45 minutes net driving time. The battery is full again after 3 hours at the socket. Shorter loading times are also sufficient for short turns. “Hit the gas you lollipop”, the man behind teases and drives his opponent in front of him. “Overtake if you can”, it echoes back. This scene is really bizarre: Two guys on two sports bikes go to extremes and ride it out among themselves, but all you hear is “Ssssssss” and their chatter.

Interview with the importer

KOM boss Hans Eder (41) comes from motorcross himself, is developing the chassis and is the inventor of the Quantya parks.

The Quantya means the end of motocross and enduro riding as we know it today?
No. I don’t want to get anyone off their motocross machine with the Quantya, that’s not our goal. If you can drive a Crosser on your doorstep, you don’t need a Quantya. But fewer and fewer people can do that. Railways are closed for environmental reasons. Due to noise pollution, residents obtain tight time windows when driving is allowed at all. You can’t just drive around in the pampas anyway. The Quantya is the right alternative. This enables us to free cross-sport from hostility and make it fit for the future. We also want to win over kids for this sport who don’t have a motorcycle background and can only operate a Playstation.

In return, the Quantya is quite expensive at just under 9,000 euros.
If you consider that a charge costs around 35 cents, it pays for itself quickly. However, we don’t want to sell everyone a Quantya. I think 60 to 70% of Quantya fans will want to have fun with it a few times a year. So head to the Quantya Park and get some exercise with a rental bike for 15 euros per training session, just like on the go-kart track. We are convinced that the whole thing works mainly through sport. Training, courses and races are offered, but also the sociable barbecue on the weekend. Because of their environmental friendliness, such parks can be opened practically anywhere. The recently opened Quantya Park in Siegsdorf is right on the outskirts, right next to the tennis courts there ?? neither disturbs the other.

Speaking of environmental friendliness: Chaining yourself in front of a Castor transport or being against coal-fired power plants and driving a Quantya is not entirely unproblematic.
Right, but we have now equipped one of the parks with a photovoltaic system that generates more electricity from solar energy than we need for the entire park with lighting, charging stations, etc. That is the long-term goal for all parks: after opening, to gain more energy from nature than the park consumes within a year.

Operate these parks?
No. We are only the point of contact and ensure the complete transfer of know-how for all those who want to operate a park. We give tips on how to design the runway with tables, berms and new modules such as half and cross pipes. Our motive as an importer is to sell the vehicles. We don’t charge sales fees, ongoing dues or anything like that.

How many of these parks should there be??
We see potential for 40 to 50 parks in Germany and 8 to 10 in Austria.

Back to technology. How long does the battery actually last??
The cell manufacturer speaks of at least 2000 charges. In addition to the statutory warranty, Quantya gives a guarantee for 1000 charges or two years.

What else does such a battery cost??
The battery is currently estimated at 4000 euros. However, we assume that the price will halve in two years’ time due to the advancing development.

Why is the Quantya the only vehicle of its kind built in series so far??
This is primarily due to the battery technology. I’m not an expert, but the Quantya makers in Switzerland have managed to bundle and control the lithium polymer cells in such a way that it works. The whole thing is still so expensive in cell production that large quantities, as they would be interesting for corporations, are not yet really economical.
