Treasure hunt at Teilehoker

New part too expensive or long out of print? Used is also possible. And the parts market holds real treasures. It is worth the hunt for the inexpensive spare part.

The new part prices make your eyes go out of your head! «The CBR driver holds out two fuffies to Ralf Wentsch. He just nods knowingly, digs change from an antiquated cash register, hands it over to his customer
a used alternator regulator for about half of the original price and gives the sports driver a tip for a screwdriver on the way. Another Honda rider is looking for a well-preserved brake caliper for his old CB 350 Four. A short negotiation, and then the part that is no longer available from the official dealer goes over the counter. Wentsch is one of an estimated several hundred used parts dealers in Germany and specializes in the Honda brand.
Rare motorcycle or salted one
Spare part prices ?? there is hardly any way around the second-hand market. The offer is extensive and, thanks to the Internet, accessible from anywhere. In addition to magazines and business directories
Some used parts dealers advertise on the worldwide network, and some allow their customers to research the items they are looking for on professionally designed websites. But that is the exception. After all: Sometimes a simple dealer list or online business card helps to find the right address in your area.
MOTORRAD wanted to know whether used parts really represented a cheap alternative and went on the hunt for spare parts nationwide. Two cases were designed for this purpose: Honda Transalp, built in 1998, red. Fall damage, affected are the tank, fairing front and side panel, front right. The driver is looking for parts that are as good as new in order to be able to better resell his motorcycle in a visually perfect condition. Suzuki GSX 1100 Katana, year 1983, silver. The owner bought the machine cheaply in poor condition and would like to restore it as a collector’s vehicle. He urgently needs a replacement for the damaged front fairing and for the scratched, rusted exhaust on the right.
As it turned out, used parts for the current Transalp model are just as rare as they are for the 20-year-old Nippon exotic from Suzuki. A dealer in Berlin gives a plausible answer on behalf of his colleagues: “We often buy motorcycles with an engine failure. However, this is an absolute rarity on the Transalp.
And as an accident machine is almost always
the front is damaged, so we hardly get any paneling. «Fan communities have formed for the katana, which are online retailers
list. This makes the search much easier. Nonetheless, the katana is a tough nut to crack as a rarely sold motorcycle.
But back to the research: First, the prices and availability of new parts were determined. All three parts of the Honda are in stock and cost 756.43 euros for the tank, 209.31 euros for the front mask and 113.33 euros for the side panel. All in all, that’s 1079.07 euros, delivery time within 24 hours. For the Suzuki GSX 1100 SZ Katana, the right part of the exhaust system costs 197.78 euros? when it is available. But it is not at the moment. Of the so-called shark snout, i.e. the front panel, only two are left in the central warehouse at a unit price of 344.13 euros. Suzuki promises to look for out of stock new parts abroad and at individual dealers so as not to disappoint the customer. Incidentally, Honda also offers the same service.
With this background knowledge, the first used parts dealer is called. The boss reports himself to Motorrad Spangler in Weibenburg. The Bavarian used parts dealer is one of the largest in Europe with 5,000 square meters of storage space and around 170,000 items in its range. But he doesn’t have the parts he wants on offer. “It may well be that a small dealer only stocks a fraction of us, but has exactly what you are looking for five times on the shelf. Good luck with your search «, wishes Siegfried Spangler.
A conglomerate of six large dealers who cover northern Germany is presented on the Internet at www.gebendetteile.com. Here the customer can make a central inquiry using an e-mail form or contact the individual dealers using the address details listed. In Hamburg at P&W and in Bielfeld at MGH there are both
a red tank for the Transalp, far
below original price. Would fit. However, the providers point out dents and describe factually and on the phone
details the condition. At B&G in Berlin, the seller does not have what he wants, but advises to search fan clubs and their websites.
Good tip. Many drivers offer and search for parts there, and there is often an opportunity to make inquiries via forums. In the specific cases of Katana and Transalp, however, the parts search was in vain, bad luck. There is another interesting address on the Internet at www.motopartner.com: Operator Mike Frison from Cologne thanks
a publicly accessible and exemplary programmed database
A virtual warehouse was set up in which private individuals and dealers can sell their parts. This free network offer, for example, can be used to locate a used parts specialist for Honda and Suzuki in Celle who sells an unpainted front fairing replica with TuV approval for the 1100 Katana. Despite the painting costs incurred, an interesting alternative if you cannot find an original part.
Internet research at www. ebay.de remains unsuccessful, even if it is always worth taking a look there. Those who do not urgently need their parts can regularly check the offers very easily
and maybe get a bargain. But watch out: Private sellers are not bound by any warranty period. In case of doubt, it is best to request pictures by e-mail and have the article described in detail. Make sure to check out the offers-
The goods are not stolen.
Serious dealers, for example, have the vehicle registration document for the cannibalized motorcycle presented to them when shopping, and note the current address from the seller in order to prevent possible messing around.
The hunt for used equipment continues: In Braunschweig, Zweirad-Technik Witte offers an original, well-preserved exhaust for the Katana for 130 euros
on. The requested digital photo arrives promptly, and all the quirks described on the phone are in the picture. Now nothing stands in the way of a purchase. Similar-
The range of used parts Rasch in Buchlberg near Passau is convincing: a new Transalp tank for 215 euros. The dealer had the tank
on his website in an online-
Database listed, described a small paint damage on the phone, which can hardly be seen in the picture sent spontaneously. Here is called
es: strike!
All that’s missing is the paneling for the Honda: At Wentsch & They are in stock at the clinic in Weilheim / Teck near Stuttgart. New and in its original packaging, bought from the remnants of a former dealer. Only the side part has a millimeter-sized flaw
on. The front mask should be over the table for 150 euros, the side part for 80 euros
walk. With proof of purchase and the for hand-
The mandatory warranty of one year. The screw set and other small parts are included free of charge. A top offer.
The hunt is over. After two days of telephone and internet research as well as an on-site visit, even hard-to-find items were considered good used items-
to get hold of parts far below the original price.
All dealers contacted did one
serious impression and advised with expertise and expertise. A comparison with the prices of new parts is always advisable, however, because some of the second-hand items are only marginally cheaper. Just as important: Clarify the condition of the parts precisely or have them documented and take into account any follow-up costs for repairs to the used parts? so that you don’t lose your eyes at the end of the total bill.

Interview with RalfWentsch

Ralf Wentsch, 41, from Wentsch & Klink in
Weilheim is a specialist in Honda used parts
and in business for 15 years.

Used parts dealers often struggle with a bad reputation. What do you think about it? A bad dealer cannot hold his own, no matter what industry. That is why we only sell parts that we are convinced of ourselves and prefer to throw a bit too much into the container instead of arguing with the customer later. Anyone who has stayed in business for a long time would actually risk their good reputation? no serious dealer would be interested in that. If someone has something to complain about, we usually come to an agreement with them. Because only a satisfied customer comes back. What security does the customer get when buying a used part? Every dealer must give at least one year of warranty on all parts. In other words, for a year it stands for the fact that a possibly non-wear-related fault did not already exist at the time of sale, whereby the burden of proof lies with the dealer in the first six months. We also give a two-week installation guarantee for entire engines because we test a purchased engine extensively, but do not disassemble it. Within two weeks, the customer can fairly safely identify damage that is not due to wear and tear. If something is wrong with the paint parts that have been sent, the customers usually contact us immediately. If there is actually an error that we have not clarified beforehand, we will take the defective goods back or reduce the price accordingly. Are new marketing opportunities on the Internet an advantage? I’m rather skeptical about that. We also buy some parts from private customers via the Internet and offer catalog data and other information on our homepage, but complex databases and their maintenance are too time-consuming and expensive for us. Each used part is unique due to its age or minor damage and should be described in detail. The price is negotiated in the specific case. This is best possible on site or at least over the phone. That way, misunderstandings can be avoided.

Motorcycle parts on the Internet

www.bike-teile.de More than 50,000 parts from dealer stocks. Components can be found using an input mask. For each item offered, clear index cards with all the data and the dealer address can be viewed on the screen. However, the photos are too small and therefore not very informative. A direct order via the online form is possible.

Motorcycle parts on the Internet

There is a lot of idealism behind this. Operator Mike Frison is a motorcyclist and hobby mechanic, so he knows the problems with finding parts. He used his own experience to program a well thought-out, lean PHP-MySQL database in which around 7000 parts from private customers and dealers are stored. Frison does not earn any money with his virtual warehouse.

Motorcycle parts on the Internet

www.ebaymotors.de The name »eBay« has meanwhile become a synonym for Internet auctions like »Tempo« for paper handkerchiefs. More than 30,000 new and used motorcycle parts from dealers and private sellers can be found on the special pages »ebay Motors«. Tip: Sellers should provide detailed photos and accurate descriptions. Convenient: interested parties can watch individual auctions in a targeted manner thanks to a special function.
