The Federal Statistical Office published statistics on road traffic accidents in 2018. Accordingly, there were more dead and injured compared to the previous year.

Three percent more deaths and 1.5 percent more injuries compared to the previous year: the road traffic accident statistics for 2018 do not read well at first glance. However, if you compare the statistics with those of 2010, at least the number of fatalities fell by 10.2 percent. Unfortunately, according to the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden, 3,275 people died in road accidents in 2018. Compared to the previous year, there were 95 more fatalities. 396,000 people were injured in traffic accidents in 2018. In 2017 there were 5,706 fewer injured road users. A total of 2,636,469 traffic accidents were recorded in 2018.

697 motorcyclists perished

Of the total of 3,275 fatally injured people, 697 were on a motorcycle. Compared to 2010, there is a slight decrease of 1.7 percent in the number of motorcyclists and moped drivers involved in accidents resulting in death. On the other hand, things don’t look so good with cyclists. Compared to 2010, the death rate has increased by 16.8 percent last year. According to statistics, 445 cyclists died in 2018.

Most of the road fatalities occurred in cars: there were 1,424 road fatalities in 2018. In 2010, this number was even worse. At that time, 22.6 percent more people died in cars than in 2018. 458 of the people who died in 2018 were pedestrians.

Urban areas, country roads, highways

According to the statistics, most of the accidents with personal injury occurred within built-up areas. 69 percent of the accidents are said to have occurred here. 30 percent of fatal accidents were also recorded within localities.
24.3 percent of accidents with personal injury occurred on rural roads. Over half, 57 percent, of the total of 3,275 road fatalities were killed in accidents on country roads.
The remaining accidents with personal injury, i.e. 6.7 percent, were recorded on the autobahn. In 2018, 422 people (12.9% of 3,275 fatalities) were killed there in accidents.
