Fans of the Royal Enfield brand, at least in Europe, have to do without completely new models. In principle, not much has changed compared to the 2019 model year – and despite this, motorcycles from what is said to be the world’s largest manufacturer of motorized two-wheelers over 200 cm³ are enjoying themselves. In the following overview we show which models will be offered in Germany in 2020.

Nobody would have thought a 400 cc single-cylinder travel enduro with 25 hp would sell better than a Honda Fireblade or a BMW R nineT Pure. But the concept of ‘utility before performance’ seems to be being accepted. Tried and tested in the eponymous mountains, the “Folding Spade on Wheels” (MOTORCYCLE test) offers a seating position suitable for long journeys, luggage storage options and the alternative to electronics and excess power in SUVs on two wheels.

Enfield would like to see the Bullet Trials as a homage to the machines of the “International Six Days Trials of the 1940s and 50s”. Handlebars with central strut, fork with bellows instead of metal sleeves, raised silencer, luggage rack, adapted fenders and studded tires as well as the color scheme with a red frame and silver paintwork are the changes to the standard bullet. The green frame with chrome-plated tank flanks costs 200 euros extra. Motor protection is available as an accessory.

In the wake of their descendants, retro fans also discovered the good old Bullet, which has been built since 1932, with brief interruptions and relocation of the production site from Redditch in England to Madras and Chennai in India. Bullet and Classic 500 are modernized classics, not modern classics such as the Kawasaki W 800 or Triumph Bonneville. The world’s largest manufacturer of motorized two-wheelers over 250 cm³ is busy quoting itself, in 950,000 units worldwide, to be precise. For comparison: BMW Motorrad is aiming for 200,000, also from a global perspective. In India, which is still the most important home market, ABS is also becoming mandatory, so three years ago the Bullet and Classic were also switched to Euro 4 by the way, with ABS and control unit with on-board diagnostics. That didn’t hurt the classic look any more than the rumble sound and the decelerating nature, everything will stay the same for 2020. After all, almost 400 buyers appreciated this in 2019.

The best-selling Enfield since its inception, the new twin-cylinder Interceptor, is a source of joy in many ways. It starts with the price, continues through optics and workmanship, the well-mannered engine with a dark, powerful tone without being annoying and loud, and it doesn’t stop with the nimble handiness. Criticism comes from the very bottom of the driver, because the seat on the long-term test motorcycle currently used turned out to be more of a training device for fakirs. On the other hand, the suspension struts are a bit underdamped, which can lead to rocky deposits after bumps in an inclined position. The long-distance test motorcycle has so far been spared technical defects, only the short maintenance intervals of 5,000 kilometers are no longer in keeping with the times.

The Royal enfield Continental GT differs from the Interceptor in that it has a different handlebar, tank, different seat and footrest position, which leads to a more front-wheel-oriented sitting posture. Plus that the footrests will scrape over the asphalt later when they are inclined.
