Insure a motorcycle
Safe through the motorcycle season

The weather is right, we can go on tour. But to make the trip a pleasure, there are a few things to consider – especially on longer tours. Preparation is required here, because the machine, helmet and protective clothing should be safe.

Prepare the machine

Regardless of whether it is a vacation trip, weekend trip or simply for a trip in between: First of all, the machine should be thoroughly cleaned of dirt. On this occasion you can check all lines and connections for tightness and the plug connections on the frame and under the bench for tightness. All bulbs and indicator lights should also do their job.

The battery is often a real weak point. She becomes limp, especially when she stands for a long time, especially when she is already a few years old. Modern chargers solve this problem. The air pressure in the tires should also be checked regularly.

A look at the brake pads reveals whether a change will soon be necessary or whether the brake can still be waited for until the next inspection. In addition, the brake fluid should be checked and replaced if necessary. The same applies to the oil.

If the motorcycle is driven by a chain, you can remove old grease and maintain it with chain spray. A slight re-tensioning may even be necessary. A final drop of oil on the joints of all levers makes the small maintenance unit perfect.

The right motorcycle protective clothing

After the motorcycle, the clothing is inspected. The helmet is the most important part of protective clothing. It should not show any visible damage and should be replaced after a fall and after a certain age. The visor should not be scratched and should be cleaned. Leather and textile combinations should be cleaned, greased or impregnated. The seams usually show whether everything is still in order. The life-saving protectors are very important. Are they seated correctly and are there no signs of damage? If a protector is damaged, it should be replaced as soon as possible. Safety always comes first. Good visibility is essential for motorcyclists at any time of the year. There are motorcycle or rain suits with reflective inserts. Motorcycle gloves and boots, and possibly a kidney belt, offer additional protection.

There are basically only a few regulations for motorcycle clothing, but you shouldn’t do without them even on hot days. A motorcyclist is legally obliged to wear a motorcycle helmet. The road traffic regulations stipulate that the drivers of motorcycles or open three- or multi-wheeled vehicles with a design-related maximum speed of over 20 km / h while driving “suitable” Have to wear a hard hat. This also applies to the passengers.

However, it should be remembered that the wearing of protective motorcycle clothing can be decisive in determining whether contributory negligence is responsible in the event of an accident. Contributory negligence on the part of the motorcyclist occurs even if the accident as such was not caused, if the injuries that occurred would have been reduced or even avoided by wearing protective motorcycle clothing.

Secured all around

Motorcycle insurance offers comprehensive insurance protection. The insurance takes effect, among other things, in the event of a driving error by the driver or if the manufacturer made mistakes in the design of the motorcycle. In the event of an accident, the accident victim and the insured person are first compensated by the motor vehicle liability insurance. Liability is compulsory insurance.

Extending it to include comprehensive insurance is a good idea, because it also covers damage to your own vehicle. The partially comprehensive insurance pays z. B. in the event of theft of the vehicle, fire or collision with animals. The fully comprehensive insurance also pays out if you are responsible for an accident yourself. At HUK-COBURG, for example, as the owner of a new bike with more than 125 cc, in the event of a total loss or loss within the first 24 months of the new registration, you even get reimbursed the new price in the comprehensive insurance. This is already the case if the repair would cost at least 80 percent of the new price. Incidentally, the protective clothing for the driver and passengers, such as motorcycle boots, motorcycle jackets or suits, as well as the helmet are also insured if there is also comprehensive damage to the vehicle.

Once the machine and protective clothing have been checked, you can start. But take it easy. Even experienced motorcyclists need a certain amount of time to get used to it, especially after a long break from driving, in order to automate the appropriate assessment of speed, road conditions and braking distance. The perfect handling of a motorcycle can therefore best be achieved through continuous training.

Have a good and safe journey!
