Second-hand advice: ABS bikes up to 4000 euros
Cheap ABS bikes

Most want it, but not everyone can afford it: ABS. Although more and more models are equipped with the helpful brake assistant, the range of inexpensive and really good used vehicles is manageable.

Thorsten Dentges

08/28/2008

A detective game: the search for cheap, attractive second-hand offers with the ABS feature. There are indeed numerous offers, but mostly they are old machines with sometimes very high mileage, which are only in good hands in experienced screwdrivers. Nevertheless: if you have a little patience, you will find honorable technology carriers of yore that have been lovingly cared for and maintained. As new vehicles they were almost priceless dream motorcycles, now they are available for less than 4,000 euros and well worth the money. Only motorcycle novices, for whom ABS is particularly recommended, do not find it easy with these comparatively clumsy old bikes, which are also often not available with 34 hp. The research shows, however, that in the price range up to 4000 euros there are now a growing number of modern representatives of the ABS guild, such as the Honda CBF 600 or BMW F 650 CS, which offer a 1a equivalent. Conclusion: Even with a narrow budget, ABS prospects are no longer slowed down.

BMW K 1100 RS

BMW K 1100 RS

Wedged by two almost overpowering models of success, K 100 RS and K 1200 RS, the K 1100 RS, which was built from 1993 to 1996, has a bit of a difficult time as a used car these days. Lover of “flying brick” – American journalists had the lengthways four-cylinder when the K 100 RS was presented in the early 1980s “flying brick” baptized – prefer the older, but hardly cheaper 1000s due to their cult status. And the decidedly more modern successor, the K 1200 RS, as a representative of a new generation of technology, also addresses interested parties outside of the narrowly defined BMW fan circles. But precisely because the 1100 is often not even on the bill, it is a hot tip: as a durable, very dignified former high-price touring machine (full equipment new price 1993: the equivalent of over 12,000 euros) with ABS at a fair rate. You can confidently enter into a long-term relationship with her. Their sober shapes are just as timeless as their qualities as a very comfortable travel chair. The somewhat rough four-cylinder engine is good for mileage well over 100,000 kilometers with good maintenance. However, the driver should pay close attention to the oil level: just a little too much oil in the reservoir increases the pressure to such an extent that in the long run the seals go to their knees. Otherwise, the 1100 with cardan drive, injection and good workmanship is not very susceptible to repair. The stable chassis takes the comparatively high weight calmly and allows sporty curve surfing, the ample payload of over 200 kilograms allows you to take a lot of luggage and pillion passengers. So there is a lot to be said for the 1100s. Significantly more pulling power than the K 100 RS makes it a more confident motorcycle and a noticeably lower purchase price than the 1200 a recommendation for bargain hunters.

plus
Weather protection very good
Ergonomics also fit on longer tours and trips
Only minor loss of value as used

minus
Running smoothness a bit rough, annoying engine vibrations
Comparatively high weight around 280 kilograms
Gear hooked

Market situation
With a manageable range of used K 1100 RS with ABS, with a little patience, dealers can also find some quite passable, inexpensive specimens. Vehicles for less than 3000 euros are actually only offered if they only belong in the hands of hobbyists with a clear conscience. Ten to 15 year old machines that are technically flawless for a mileage of 50,000 to 80,000 kilometers cost between 3,000 and 4,000 euros, depending on the maintenance condition. Since the demand for the 1100 is rather subdued, it is worth acting, especially with private sellers without a warranty obligation!

Data (year of construction 1993)
Water-cooled four-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, 1092 cm³, 74 kW (100 PS) at 7500 rpm, weight 281 kg, load 204 kg, tank capacity / reserve 21/5 liters, seat height 800 mm, top speed 219 km / h, consumption 4, 5 to 10.4 l / 100 km, great

BMW F 650 CS

BMW F 650 CS

The BMW F 650 CS, based on skiing too “Scarver” (for Street Carver) called, is as nimble as hardly any other. With the G-Kat, timing belt, optional ABS and bold design, BMW presented a really fresh innovation in the rather bland middle class in 2002. Poppy, fashionable, different – but nobody was really keen on it. The last Scarver rolled off the production line at the end of 2005, although the concept fits almost everyone: women and men with short legs are accommodated by the low seat height of 780 millimeters, young and older beginners have no stress with the handy and rock-solid machine, and experienced asphalt cowboys gallop with them wide road tires and the sufficient 50 hp research over any surface, no matter how bad the road surface – fun and sporty like on skis on the descent in Sankt Moritz. And also comparatively cheap, because in terms of maintenance and fuel costs, the CS is one of the cheaper representatives of its class. The reliable single-cylinder sweeper offers a top value second-hand, especially since it is usually much cheaper than the Enduro F 650 GS. Unlike many other used ABS machines up to 4000 euros, CS often have pleasantly low mileages of around 10,000 kilometers. So if you want the important ABS safety feature and if you keep your money together, then the Scarver is the right choice. Maybe even a few euros for new skis are easy enough.

plus
Consumption very low
Seat height also suitable for small pilots
Toothed belt drive saves maintenance stress

minus
Design takes getting used to, image rather mediocre
Main stand not available
Payload low

Market situation
Respectable: More than 6000 of the motorcycle, which was only built for four years, are registered in Germany. Used machines with ABS are advertised comparatively frequently, the demand is limited given the overall good supply. Offers start from around 3000 euros, usually the years 2002/2003 with around 30,000 kilometers. Little-used ABS scarvers (less than 10,000 kilometers) start from 3500 euros, for well-maintained, younger machines (built in 2004/2005) you should plan around 4000 euros. Dealer and private offers are roughly in balance.

Data (year of construction 2001)
Water-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke engine, 652 cm³, 37 kW (50 PS) at 6800 rpm, weight 193 kg, load 177 kg, tank capacity 15 liters, seat height 770 mm, top speed 180 km / h, consumption (country road) 3.7 l / 100 km, normal

Honda CBF 600

Second-hand advice: ABS bikes up to 4000 euros

Honda CBF 600

There is a fundamental difference between “cheap” and “inexpensive”. Take the Honda CBF 600 as an example: it is widely regarded as a cheap entry-level machine. This is wrong. The 600 series, introduced in 2004, is anything but a cheap number: complete stainless steel exhaust system, variable seat height, very neatly processed cast parts. As with the Silver Wing Roller, the ABS controls almost perfectly, the basic features of the chassis come from the Honda Hornet 600. The extremely reliable four-cylinder engine has proven itself for generations in the fine sports car, the CBR 600 F, since the only major facelift for the 2008 vintage is the work of the injection engine from the current CBR 600 RR, embedded in an aluminum instead of steel frame. The motto at Honda: build on what has been tried and tested. The production costs are kept within limits, which lowers the final price. In fact, there are only a few motorcycles around 7,000 euros for which the equivalent value is as high as the CBF models and which are also equipped with ABS. Space and ergonomics are good for long tours, the low-insurance 78 hp are perfectly adequate for country roads and motorways. The CBF 600 / S is really great, but it is still too expensive as a new machine for many interested parties. Used, on the other hand, it is offered for less than 4,000 euros: well-maintained machines with low mileage for half the value as new. At the moment you can hardly get a better, inexpensive ABS motorcycle. Which, by the way, is also easy to sell again. Dealers report that used CBF 600 with ABS usually find an interested party very quickly. Copies without the brake assistant, on the other hand, are difficult to sell – price dumping does not help, because cheaper would not be better in this case.

plus
Maintenance costs low, inspection every 12,000 kilometers
34 hp variant available
Consumption of less than five liters per 100 kilometers is possible without any problems

minus
Maneuvering a bit complicated, large turning circle (5.85 meters)
Image conservative, factual
Engine is a bit weak due to the design

Market situation
CBF is comparatively young, but as a bestseller it is already quite present on the used market – and in demand. When searching, make sure that it is actually the ABS version, because although the optionally available, additional safety feature is highly recommended, a small group of first-time owners (around ten percent according to Honda) decided against it. Most offers between 3000 and 4000 euros are built in 2004 or 2005 and they usually have less than 20,000 kilometers on the clock.

Data (year of construction 2004)
Water-cooled four-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, 600 cm³, 57 kW (78 PS) at 10500 rpm, weight 229 kg, load 175 kg, tank capacity 19 liters, seat height 770-800 mm, top speed 210 km / h, consumption (country road) 4 , 8 l / 100 km, normal

Tests in MOTORCYCLE
7/2004 (TT), 10/2004 (ABS-VT), 16/2004 (KV), 9/2005 (VT), 20/2006 (VT), 5/2007 (ABS-VT)

Yamaha GTS 1000 A

Second-hand advice: ABS bikes up to 4000 euros

Yamaha GTS 1000

That was a techno bang! The special features of the GTS 1000 hardly left anyone indifferent when it debuted in 1993. The obvious stub axle steering alone! Viewing habits from back then were based on well-known telescopic forks, and even nowadays the viewer can hardly avert his gaze from this exotic construction. The eyes wander further to the avant-garde “Omega” frame construction made of aluminum and steel, which still gives the motorcycle a futuristic look. The engine: the modified four-cylinder from the brute sports car FZR 1000, capped to 100 hp for sports tourists, but trimmed for more power. Petrol is injected electronically, and the residues of burned fuel are passed through a regulated catalytic converter. Hardly noticeable now, it was very progressive 15 years ago. Overall, the GTS was mostly a curious glare. This is borne out by the figures: up to the construction stop in 1996, only around 1200 units of the 1000 series had been sold. In practice, apart from the excellent brakes with a finely responsive anti-lock braking system, the rest of the technology could hardly meet the high expectations placed on the very demanding high-price segment. And the chassis had to take a lot of criticism due to its unfavorable tires – the wide 130 at the front causes a lot of unrest, which is why conversion (with a freely available parts certificate) to a 120 dimension is absolutely recommended. With second-hand GTS this is often already done, and the extravagant one Yamaha turns out to be a great touring machine – super comfortable and very reliable too. To get hold of more than just a fan item and currently for a course that allows access instead of just looking at it.

plus
Engine with G-Kat and pulling power fed up
Brakes flawlessly, finely regulating ABS
Generous payload, fully suitable for travel

minus
Weight very high
130 mm front tires cause unrest in the chassis
Consumption when driving on the highway is well over eight liters

Market situation
Used GTS are rather rare on the market. However, a slightly higher search effort will almost certainly lead interested parties to success after a while. The few used ones are more pleasing-
Usually at the dealer, private offers are mostly lovingly cared for machines with a checkbook. From 3000 euros
the technology carrier of yore can be got hold of as a good used one, but the interested party has to be prepared for mileage of at least 50,000 kilometers. At 4,000 euros, the machine should not have more than 40,000 kilometers on the clock and be technically absolutely fit.

Data (year of construction 1998)
Water-cooled four-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, 1003 cm³, 72 kW (98 PS) at 9000 / min, weight 279 kg, payload 221 kg, tank capacity / reserve 20/3 liters, seat height 790 mm, top speed 226 km / h, consumption (country road ) 5.6 l / 100 km, normal

Alternatives

BMW and ABS ?? now inseparable. The pioneer in the field of ABS offered the K 100 RS with the optional brake assistant back in 1983. Interested parties with a budget of a maximum of 4000 euros will inevitably come across various BMW models, as these are by far the most represented in the portfolio. Other manufacturers responded much later and mostly half-heartedly to the ABS needs of customers? Recommended specimens in this price range are rare, but it’s worth looking for.

BMW F 650 GS
The robust single-cylinder enduro advanced to become a mid-range bestseller. The large inventory includes some good second-hand offers with around 20,000 kilometers for around 3500 euros.

BMW K 75 RT
A work tool? not just for motorcycle cops. The loyal 750 was and is always at the service of countless kilometer eaters and frequent travelers and always ready for action with good care.

BMW K 100 RS
The “original” ABS bike. Has a solid group of friends and is rarely offered for less than 3000 euros for its age (last year of construction 1992). With good care, however, this value is retained.

BMW R 1100 RS
It was the first representative of the new generation of boxers with four valves per cylinder. Unlike the successful GS models, the RS can also be obtained relatively cheaply with ABS.

Honda CBF 1000
If you open the price window of 4,000 euros upwards by a few hundred, you will find a few used offers of the great, modern all-rounder with a perfect brake assistant.

Kawasaki GPZ 1100 ABS
Leads a wallflower existence and is therefore a real bargain tip (construction period 1995 to 1998; good deals around 3500 euros). The unpretentious motorcycle is great for touring.

Suzuki GSF 1200 Bandit A / SA
Around ten-year-old bandits with ABS are advertised for around 4,000 euros. The solid bestseller can easily handle the usual mileage of 30,000 kilometers.

Yamaha FJ 1200 ABS
Built from 1991 to 1996. The sales success was limited despite the laudable ABS. Good offers from these years can be found for less than 3000 euros.

Readers ask

After an accident, how can I prove that I actually braked even though there are no skid marks due to the ABS?

Michael Haumann, expert from TuV Rheinland:
It is not true that ABS braking does not leave any skid marks. When braking with maximum deceleration, ABS ensures that no more than 20 to 30 percent slip occurs on the respective wheel, because the deceleration values are greater in the area of static friction than in the area of sliding friction (locking). The controlled slip means that cornering forces continue to keep the motorcycle stable. In the event of an emergency stop, tire abrasion usually occurs anyway. Even if the braking tracks are significantly weaker than with conventional brakes because of the brake assistant, it can be concluded from this that the accident happened and the expert takes into account that it is an ABS machine.

Can’t I get just as good braking performance with driver safety training and racing experience? even without ABS?

Claus Schmitt, police officer and professional driving trainer:
During safety training or races, the driver is usually prepared for braking and recognizes the correct braking point. In road traffic there are usually surprising dangerous situations that require extremely quick reactions. If you get scared, things look rather bad with optimal braking. With ABS, at least an acceptable braking distance is achieved in such a situation, especially on loose ground or changing road surfaces. Another advantage of the system: the brake assistant allows you to approach the blocking limit by regularly braking into the control range and thus training better brake control ?? a valuable learning effect.

Does an anti-lock braking system actually age and what is the best way to care for it?

Jens Stanke, Technical Director at BMW Motorrad:
For the care and maintenance of ABS machines, as with motorcycles with conventional brake systems, it is very important to adhere to the change intervals for brake fluid in accordance with the maintenance plan. The other, ABS-specific components of the system mostly consist of maintenance-free components. Any deviations from the “target state” are recorded by the electronic event memory of the control unit and could be read out at the BMW dealer if there is any suspicion.

ABS conveys a false sense of security: ABS does not do anything in curves, and in the event of a system failure, nothing stops braking, right?

Karsten Schwers, MOTORRAD head tester:
In curves, motorcycles with conventional brakes hardly differ from ABS motorcycles, since excessive decelerations (up to the blocking limit) are not possible in greater lean angles. A strong erecting moment actually sets the machine upright at first. The situation is completely different when it is wet: Then the front wheel quickly tends to lock even in an inclined position? ABS can therefore be very helpful in this situation. Regarding the system failure: only in older BMW models with brake booster can the braking force to be applied increase in the event of a system failure, with other motorcycles it brakes almost normally even without a functioning ABS, just without control processes. Conclusion: Motorcycles with ABS do not convey false safety.

How do I know if the system is working properly on an older used machine with an anti-lock braking system?

Aaron Lang, spokesman for Honda Motor Europe (North):
You can confidently trust the ABS indicator light during a test drive. It goes out when the speed of the motorcycle exceeds ten km / h. If the indicator lights up while you are driving, it is better to stop the motorcycle in a safe place and switch off the engine. Restart the engine. The display should then light up and then go out again after starting up. The driver recognizes a malfunction when the ABS display flashes and remains lit. However, the brakes are ready for operation even in the event of a malfunction and ensure normal operation? It is therefore possible to continue safely back to the supplier or to a workshop, and a professional should then check the system thoroughly.
