Most of them in East Troy / Wisconsin, where recently around 180 employees put together a maximum of 60 machines a day – and unfortunately never really earned any money with it. In 2002, the XB series equipped with aluminum bridge frames replaced the tubular frame models that had been officially imported to Germany since 1997.

The combination of modern chassis technology and radical chassis geometry with a supposedly antiquated V2 engine drove the XB models to extremes: A frame serving as a fuel tank, combined with a swing arm that functions as an oil tank and a relentlessly inflated Sportster engine (which was completely supplied by Harley was), plus a stovepipe placed under the engine as an exhaust and a single, huge brake disc in the front wheel connected directly to the rim – this crazy combination was only available from Buell. The XB series started with the relatively easy-revving 984 cm? Engine, but the beefier 1203 fits the primeval character even better. Both twins ensure the legendary, very broad Buell grin.

While the owners of the tubular frame models have to have a certain ability to suffer in order to be happy with their sweetheart, XB owners can look forward to a noticeably increased suitability for everyday use of their machines (which the MOTORRAD endurance test over 50,000 kilometers has proven). The completely unsuccessful first tires (Dunlop D 207) installed from 2002 to 2004 should now be history. If not: hold price talks. They should also be waiting when rusting screws or a decrepit original exhaust are to be complained about – both typical XB quirks, which also include worn out brake floaters and frame damage concealed by carbon covers (falling over).

Very important: a complete service history, because Buell was happy to carry out recalls and updates during the regular workshop visits. If in doubt, have the Buell dealer look into the IT system, everything is recorded there – especially the tiresome subject of oil pump pinions. Keyword conversions: What should warn you to be careful with other used motorcycles is completely normal and harmless with Buells. The classics: rear, handlebars, mirrors, indicators and exhaust. Market situation

There are two extremes in the XB used world: The Lightning XB12S ranks at the top end. With the usual modifications and improvements, it is clearly the most popular XB model when used. The lower end of the popularity spectrum is marked by the Ulysses, which was already flopped as a new machine, regardless of whether it was a travel enduro blend XB12X or a tourer XB12XT hung with suitcases. the “small” Surprisingly, the XB9S is one of the more sought-after used vehicles and even ranks ahead of the “Special size models” XB12Ss (for long people) or XB12Scg (for short-legged people).

The XB12Ss equipped with the larger frame of the Ulyssses is the best tip for Buell newbies and / or “Normal”, because it offers the least capricious driving behavior with the larger wheelbase and the flatter steering head angle. In a direct comparison, the half-wired R models (Firebolt) are always a bit cheaper than the bare S (Lightning). At the moment some XB owners are switching to the 1125, so there are good trade-ins at some Buell dealers.
