1000, 1000 S, S2R 1000, S4R or S4Rs?

In 2003 the original monster was upgraded with a new engine, followed in 2006 by a new look with a single-sided swing arm and high-end exhaust. Is the 1000 two-valve monster the best monster ever? Our used check reveals that.

The key data of the 1000 monster from 2003 are just as archaic as the model designation. At a time when the power-naked bike genre is rapidly gaining traction, it works Ducati at first like a dusty relic of glorious days: air-cooled engine, 85 hp, tubular space frame from the late 1980s – has the lively jumping horse now said goodbye to the sanctuary? Especially since the Monster family has grown significantly since the first M900 from 1993, also in terms of performance.

For example the S4 from 2001 with a 100 hp, water-cooled 916 engine. Or the S4R, which appears at the same time as the Monster 1000 and with the super sporty 996 engine throws 117 hp into the ring. But for traditionalists, the air-cooled two-valve engine is and will remain the best engine concept for the Italian roadster. Connoisseurs of the scene swear by the 1000 L-Twin with completely rebuilt cylinder heads and dual ignition: no Ducati has marched out of the cellar as powerfully as this. 2006 attracts the same engine in the fresher S4R design.

sightseeing

What is it about a Ducati that frightens people interested in used? The regulars’ slogan “costs a lot to maintain”! What’s up Ducati screwdrivers describe the two-valve 1000 series as stable and reliable – assuming regular maintenance.

It is ideal if the valve clearance has been freshly adjusted and the timing belt has been replaced. As a rule, a 20,000 inspection, during which this work is pending, costs around 500 euros, the small service (alternating every 10,000 km) is significantly cheaper.

Occasionally the alternator cover may leak: watch out for oily dirt spots. The Simmerrings on the upside-down fork can also flounder: Check for streaks after the test drive. If the dry clutch rattles particularly loudly, the friction disks have smashed into the clutch basket. The basket is quickly unscrewed and checked. When looking into the service booklet, clarify whether recalls (strut redirection, oil pump screw) have been made.

The difficult exercise will not be to find a 1000 monster with double ignition, but to put together a small selection that is as close as possible to the original condition. The fact is: the naked Ducatis are hung often and abundantly. The following rule of thumb applies: the more previous owners, the more accessories! What doesn’t look very fresh after ten years or more given the very early years of construction of the Monster 1000. Ideally, the previous owner can still enclose the original parts such as license plate holders, indicators, mirrors, and exhaust neatly packed in a box.

Otherwise, you should think carefully about whether to put a custom bike in front of the garage – even if it is technically flawless (keyword: resale). But they actually exist: original enthusiast vehicles, technically and optically in top condition. The prices for an older Monster 1000 / S start just under 4000 euros, the mileage is mostly over the 40,000 mark. Introduced in 2006, the S2R 1000 with a single swing arm and “double barrel” silencer start at around 5000 euros with a mileage of around 20,000 kilometers.
