Kawasaki’s former model athlete, affectionately known by the fans as the “Neuner”, actually didn’t match the brand’s super-sporty image at all. The comparatively comfortable design benefits it today as a used bike.

When the ZX-9R succeeded the GPZ 900 R in 1994, it looked like it was from another planet in comparison. The first edition of the nine-ninja was exemplary in terms of driving dynamics and properties. They also liked the ergonomics, which are very comfortable for athletes. Which is why the older ninja years are now considered formidable sports tourers for soloists. The first series suffered from burning cylinder head gaskets, leaking water pumps and leaking gears. However, this damage should long ago have been repaired. In the second generation from 1998 onwards, the trouble started with fork-flapping. During hard braking maneuvers on undulating ground, various vibrations could overlap and trigger it. Not all machines were affected and the problem arose to very different degrees. The third generation from the year of construction 2000 also suffered from the flutter. This was remedied with less snappy brake pads. Only after a thorough revision in 2002 was the subject settled. If you don’t want to go to the racetrack, you can confidently access the older vintages, because fork flutter hardly occurs on the country road. In return, the drive can show its strengths there, combining elegant brawny acceleration at low and medium speeds with explosive power output at the top. The four-cylinder withstands high mileage without complaint, as it has proven in the 50,000-kilometer long-distance test carried out by sister magazine PS.

Kawasaki ZX -10R

Unlike the ZX-9R, the ZX-10R doesn’t compromise. Her motto: Praises what makes you fast. 175 HP at 198 kilograms with a full tank are the best prerequisites for this.

Even the test editor Ralf Schneider, who was never at a loss for detailed explanations, struggled for words when he came back from his first encounter with the ZX-10R. “Grim,” he just said. The meeting of 175 hp and 198 kilograms could hardly have been described more euphemistically. Because despite all the good-naturedness, which the ten ninja is quite ready, it should be clear that with impetuous gas inflation it mutates into an unguided floor-to-floor projectile. The first model often had engine damage caused by dying alternator bearings. Friends of the accelerated pace sometimes despaired of the shifting pressure point of the front brake. Affected machines were together with Kawasaki Germany provided a remedy through the dealer with individual measures. The ZX-10R survived the MOTORRAD endurance test over 50,000 kilometers largely unscathed. No wonder, as there is seldom an opportunity to really challenge the engine. On the country road, first gear, which reaches up to 150 km / h, is enough to be a pedestrian for life, and even on the racetrack, full throttle is rather the exception. Regardless of this, there was a completely redesigned successor after just two years of construction.

ZX-10R: inspection, market situation, data, tests, model maintenance

sightseeing
In the first model year, recognizable by the golden instead of red R in the type designation and a darker fairing bow, some examples had defective alternators that were replaced. The defect is announced by increasing vibrations. On all 2004 models, the front rim was replaced due to the risk of breakage. A few specimens also struggled with poorly separating clutches. If the shifting pressure point of the front brake, which also only occurs in some models, cannot be remedied, the installation of the brake system of the ZX-6R will help.

Market situation
Kawasaki brought the first ten among the maddening crowd around 4,500 times, the new edition from 2006 has a good 2,300 units to this day. The entry level for original, accident-free and well-kept copies is around 7500 euros. Even for less than 9,000 euros, there are plenty of copies with far less than 5000 kilometers on the clock. According to the seller, an amazing number of the decathletes have never seen a racetrack. Accessories are less reflected in a higher price, but rather serve as a decision-making aid with around 200 offers on the market. The enclosed original parts still support this.

ZX-9R: inspection, market situation, data, tests, model maintenance

sightseeing
Before the viewing, the interested party should be clear which model he would like to have, since, for example, a total of eight years of construction are represented in the price segment from 3000 to 4000 euros. The first generation occasionally suffered from defective cylinder head gaskets and leaky water pumps. The fork flutter began in 1998. The transmission requires special attention on a test drive. If the gears don’t click cleanly, hands off. The third series got duller brake pads to prevent fork flutter. Only the fourth edition from 2002 is considered reliable.

Market situation
From a total of 21,652 ninjas sold, the Federal Motor Transport Authority still had 16,359 copies on January 1, 2006. From this, a conclusion can be drawn about the robustness, after all, sports bikes are often used on the racetrack to promote wear and tear. Assuming regular maintenance, the rough-running four-cylinder is also available for six-figure mileage. Many fans seem to put the Kawa in the living room, because the mileage is noticeably low on many offers. The fact is: the range of copies of all series is sufficiently large that you do not have to buy the first occassion. Mileage and asking price are subject to very large fluctuations. It’s worth comparing.
