Puristic, muscular, timelessly beautiful naked bike
Second hand advice Moto Guzzi Griso

Since the Le Mans series, hardly any other Guzzi has struck the heart like this: puristic, muscular, timelessly beautiful and with a little bit of sport. In the ranks of modern naked bikes, the Griso comes across as pleasantly conservative.

The Griso designers had a clear idea: the exhaust should look like a turbine – express power, convey dynamism. When the 8V (large in the picture), so far the youngest Griso in the range, was presented in 2007, the silencer with a double-pipe cross-section symbolized the number eight – aha, borrowed from the two-times four valves that the 1200 model of the two-valve Griso 850 and 1100 (since 2005) should distinguish.

But when it comes to exhaust, Griso fans have only one thing to say: Down with the rocket launcher! The opinion of the majority among the Guzzi fans: The huge part mercilessly shoots the shape of the super beautiful motorcycle. And appearance is arguably one of the main reasons to buy a Griso.

Mainly, fans of the traditional Italian brand bought, but sales have so far been modest. Despite a five-year construction period (until 2009), the 1100er did not go away 1000 times, the dosed and somewhat flimsy 850er (2007/2008) was only sold in homeopathic doses. The lack of success is unfair, because the Griso is a simply knitted, but stimulating machine with a sporty chassis. Not suitable for long tours (too uncomfortable for that), but fast enough for entertaining country road games. Not overly expensive – certainly not second-hand – and relatively stable in value.

With its more powerful four-valve engine, the 1200 is unquestionably the better motorcycle, and with 110 hp it can keep up well in the league of naked macho bikes. From 2010 also with classic paintwork as a special edition model (see model upgrade), which, however, has a rarity status as a used one. A heart-and-soul motorcycle: powerful, dynamic, recommendable.

Moto Guzzi Griso 1100 Neatly finished and solid two-valve machine with a powerful 88 hp.

The two-valve models are considered to be particularly robust and, with proper maintenance, are good for more than six-figure mileage, as experts of these machines assure. The first 8V models (motor variant A5), on the other hand, can sometimes bother when they are subjected to heavy cold loads or when speed concerts are held. This can result in damaged camshafts. The repair is not particularly complex, but still costs around 450 euros per camshaft. It is therefore advisable to keep one ear to the valve train during the on-site appointment. Rattles what? Then it is essential to check the valve clearance; if necessary, it is better to stay away from the offer. Accessories are rather secondary – except for the exhaust. The giant original silencer has often been exchanged for a lighter and slimmer retrofit solution. Attention: With some systems, power is flimsy, up to 20 hp! The Termignoni exhaust works well (780 euros).

Moto Guzzi Griso 850 Same chassis, but less power: 75 HP.

The new 850 was not a bestseller – nor is it second-hand. Bargain? Well, from 5,000 euros they are in good condition with rarely more than 15,000 kilometers on the clock. Mostly these are trade-ins with traders who want to get rid of them like sour beer, but hardly achieve more than 6500 euros. The much more popular, because it is more powerful and more fun, the large two-valve Griso is available for this money with mileages of around 25,000 kilometers, and for a thousand more, the 1100 is almost as good as new (less than 5,000 kilometers). The more modern 8V in a similarly great condition with an odometer reading below 10,000 can be identified as a used vehicle from 8,000 euros. However, private providers can hardly ask for more than 9,000 euros, otherwise the machine will stop. Dealers offer new machines and daily registrations from 10,000 euros, some with zero percent financing. The Griso second hand offer is generally modest, so the prices remain relatively stable.
