The Honda CX models are among the best-selling motorcycles ever. However, good specimens in their original condition are now rare. It is particularly rare to see a CX 650 E, which nowadays only changes hands at collector’s prices.

Such a crap. As soon as I take a closer look at the privately advertised Honda CX 650 E, I’ve already been exposed. After less than five minutes. “Motor press, right?” Is the brief question from the owner, which is actually already a statement. He can’t help but smile mischievously. It was the phone number on the MOTORRAD reader’s cell phone display that gave me away ?? what a stupid rookie mistake.
In this case, however, there are no consequences because the price limit has already been set. “At the moment I don’t sell them for less than 3100 euros, I’m too attached to the CX for that.” After 13 years without any problems, this is an understandable point of view of the CX owner, which makes any further attempt at haggling in vain. Given the low inventory ?? According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), only 249 copies of the CX 650 E are permitted ?? is he sure that his 650 “will find a lover because of its good condition, for whom it is worth the price”.
Apart from a scratch on the right side of the tank and a few rust pimples inside the fuel tank, the 1987 Honda is actually in a neat condition despite the mileage of 43,000 kilometers and a total of five previous owners. Traces of use in the form of small scratches can be polished out without difficulty. Rust is practically undetectable, not even on the corrosion-prone exhaust manifold. The black paint of the engine is immaculately preserved, the V2 itself does not show the slightest trace of leaks. In keeping with the good visual impression, the technology also seems to be in great shape. A test drive of the shutdown machine is not possible, but the cold engine starts promptly, runs mechanically quietly, takes on the gas cleanly and makes a sound
with that typical, wonderfully sonorous bubbling like only the CX models
is own. Anyone interested in this very rare youngtimer should contact the owner on 0171/1738634.

Model overview

Model history Slurry pump. Just just slurry pump. Anyone who knows a little about the motorcycle scene knows immediately which bike is meant. Actually intended as a mockery of the Honda CX 500, this name from a Werner comic (Volume 4 “Eiskalt”) quickly became the nickname for the CX. Today, both concepts and motorcycles have long been a cult. That was out of the question when it was presented at the end of 1977. Testers and potential buyers turned up their noses at the idiosyncratic styling of the mid-range tourer. The smooth cylinders with their strangely twisted heads, the combination of the lamp and cockpit under a plastic cover, and the chubby design of the tank and seat deterred many aesthetes. Practically inclined contemporaries, on the other hand, accepted with enthusiasm. Word quickly got around, especially among touring enthusiasts, both the high level of comfort of the Honda and the outstanding qualities of the water-cooled V2 engine from a tourist point of view. The two-cylinder, which was designed to be easy to maintain, impressed right away with its reliability and stability, which were by no means the rule at the end of the 1970s. Even the initial problems with breaking timing chain tensioners in the first year of production as well as more frequent leaks on the water pump could not endanger the nimbus of indestructibility that was soon achieved. Hardly any oil consumption, low fuel consumption for the time, as well as the good-natured performance development weighed heavier on the travel clientele than the weaknesses of the chassis, which reminded of the undersized central tube frame and the spongy spring elements with a brisk driving style. Nevertheless, the CX 500 became a gigantic success for Honda with almost 25,000 copies sold. Of the models of the CX series launched on the market in the following years (see right), however, only the soft chopper CX 500 C (around 15,000 units) was able to record a similarly great success. The much more modern CX variants offered from 1982 onwards, on the other hand, did not sell as well by far; of the 650s, only 1,446 were sold. Taken together, the sales figures for all CX variants are truly impressive: Honda brought exactly 48310 pieces to the motorcycle population in Germany alone. According to KBA, 11200 copies of the original CX 500 have survived to this day. There is no shortage of used CX 500 Cs, an impressive 10,100 units are still registered. Less often you come across a CX 500 E (2070 pieces) or GL 500 (1650 pieces). The 650s are real rarities: 414 of the CX 650 C still exist, 293 of the GL 650, and the CX 650 E is only registered 249 times (as of September 2003). The owners of a CX 650 Turbo probably even know each other personally, as there are only 43 of them. These former technology carriers are likely to ?? if they are even offered? only to be had for a lot of money. However, it is much cheaper to buy one of the CX-500 variants. At the same time, used buyers have to reckon with a relatively high and stable price level, which in view of the age and the mostly high mileage of the machines will surprise many interested parties. While everyday vehicles with enormous mileage and corresponding signs of use and consumption are still reasonably cheap to have, well-maintained CX 500 in their original condition are hardly offered for less than 1300 euros, even if they have many kilometers on the clock. For top models from first hand with a proven mileage of less than 30,000 kilometers, the former new price is almost again being demanded today ?? a consequence of the cult around the slurry pump. Determining the value of a CX is not that easy, because the last units of the series were sold in 1987. There are practically no used vehicles on sale in the trade any more, and there are no longer any used lists for orientation purposes for private sales. Basically, however, it can be said that the original model that was once so vilified is particularly sought after. The 27 hp versions, which are not in great demand today, should be much cheaper to get, as dethrottling is quite expensive. How high the enthusiast value of a CX model ultimately turns out to be, the provider and buyer must negotiate individually. Depending on supply and demand, prices can vary considerably. ViewingThe reputation of being indestructible still precedes the CX models. Almost 20 years after production was discontinued, however, this has to be put into perspective. In addition to the problems with the timing chain tensioner and the leaking water pump seal, there were actually only a few model-specific weak points, such as the high susceptibility of the exhaust system and frame to rust. But due to the long time and the mostly proud mileage, most CX models nowadays show the usual wear and tear, such as seized bearings of the deflection lever on the Pro-Link models or brittle and hardened plastic and rubber parts. Anyone who is toying with the purchase of a CX should therefore contact one of the numerous interest groups via the Internet (highly recommended: www.cx500-online.de with numerous links to other IGs and clubs), whose members are usually as active as they are helpful. There you can find competent advice and help with all possible and impossible difficulties.
