Around 15 years ago, Japanese big bike burners brought a sizzling rush of speed. Today they can be obtained cheaply, including suitability for travel.

Madness: Saturday morning breakfast in Munich, lunch menu in Cologne, for coffee in Hamburg and in the evening in the disco in Berlin. The next day hungover from Prussia to Bavaria in one piece. Everything with the motorcycle, total biker jet set. It would not be just madness, but true masochism, if you actually did it.
In theory, however, it would be possible, because with the right machine under your bum, such a brutal tour on Germany’s well-developed autobahns could be realized. Motorcycles with steam are recommended as single-track ICE, which do not get nervous beyond 200 km / h, which comfortably accommodate their driver behind the windshield and fairing and which do not shake him up like a vodka martini with the smooth running of the engine.
You are now thinking of calibers like Honda CBR 1100 XX Blackbird, Kawasaki ZX-12R, Suzuki Hayabusa 1300 or Yamaha FJR 1300? Right, these are cannons that shoot you from A to B at the speed of light. “Beam me up, Scottie” is the announcement, provided the road in front of you is as smooth as the Pacific Ocean. However, financially not everyone can afford the first class ticket, as these hums are not exactly cheap to get even used.
Their older family members are completely different. Honda CBR 1000 F, Kawasaki ZZ-R 1100, Suzuki GSX 1100 F and Yamaha FJ 1200 were already plowing over the track at high speed when Hayabusa and the like were still slumbering on the drawing board. These motorcycles were only allowed in the late eighties and early nineties
not cranking up in Germany?
due to the power limitation to 100 hp. At the beginning of their careers, the big bikes tried their hand at sports. And hardly made a trick against equally strong, but much lighter 750 and 600.
Of course, many drivers circumvented the restriction by unthrottling their cars and with 30 to 50 more-
PS their weighty motorcycles die
returned due sovereignty. A reader wrote to MOTORRAD at the time after reading his ZZ-R 1100 first of all circumcised and then, after a minor intervention, returned to full performance potential-
could grab: »Nobody needs 150 HP ?? but it’s so awesome. “
Some of the Japan Big Bikes of this era are now available for less than 3000 euros. Hardly any other motorcycle genre offers so much motorcycle for so little money, or rather, so many horses
for so few euros. It would be unfair to classify these machines as pure motorway burners. After they gradually shed their super sports image and passed as sumo wrestlers at most, more and more buyers discovered the extremely good travel and everyday properties of the Far East four-cylinder.
Loaded with luggage and a passenger, the more than ten-year-old cars can still go on vacation stress-free today. Over expressway stages to the target area, unbuckle your suitcase there, and then off you go to the winding country road pleasure. The big bikes, which weigh more than five hundred pounds but are astonishingly easy to handle, are just as suitable
for everyday life and are about for commuters who are looking for a low-priced-
looking for a solid and comfortable base, extremely interesting.
There was and is little to complain about with the powerful four-cylinder in-line engines. Not just their running culture and potency,
but also the longevity is exemplary. Regularly serviced specimens easily put away 100,000 kilometers and more ?? especially when it comes to marathon kilometers, which ideally only come from one or two tour-oriented previous owners. On the subject of “full performance”: Not all conversions were
with TuV blessing, which is why you should pay attention to the performance information in the vehicle registration document when buying a used vehicle
should verify a test drive. If the machine is registered as throttled, but actually open, this can cause problems with the insurance company in the event of an accident. If necessary, bring the machine to the dealer for a check.
Spare and wear parts of the former top models of the respective manufacturers are usually easy to get due to the comparatively long construction times, and used parts are also not uncommon. The time-honored flagships
still populate our streets in large numbers and, with appropriate maintenance, can seriously compete with many of the current high-tech machines as a dignified, inexpensive Autobahn Express.

Model overview: Honda CBR 1000 F

Model history
»Yoghurt Cup« ?? this term coined the Honda CBR 1000 F together with her
little sister of 600. In 1987 they were the first series machines completely clad in plastic. The unobstructed view of the newly designed engine was blocked. When the cladding was dismantled, little aesthetic came to the fore: a high-tech unit with the charm of a nuclear power plant surrounded by hoses and cables.
The first CBR 1000 F (type SC 21) became a big seller, contrary to all mockery criticism. Which is not surprising, because apart from controversies about good or bad taste, the Honda revealed its qualities: excellent running smoothness and brakes, a comfortable but somewhat unwieldy chassis and a powerful engine, the ad
hoc passed MOTORRAD’s 40,000-kilometer long-distance test with ease. Success proves right, and the comfortable seating position for the driver and pillion made the yoghurt pot not only sporty heaters, but also touring riders into shopping friends. Despite so much disguise, pilots from 1.85 meters complained about a lack of wind protection? the front window was too small.
From 1989 the CBR 1000 F was called internally SC 24. Honda revised and revised the engine
the chassis and mounted wider rims. The 140 mm rear tire, which was extremely narrow even for the early nineties, gave way to a 170 mm, the front tire grew to 120 mm format. The previously criticized pushing over the front wheel when cornering quickly was a thing of the past. There was also a new, now angular fairing and a larger windshield ?? However, the CBR still did not offer perfect wind protection. In 1993 Honda introduced the compound braking system Dual CBS (Combined Braking System), the motorcycle gained around ten kilograms, apart from technical and optical retouching nothing else changed. In the spring of 1996, the Japanese presented their new, 164 hp top model, the CBR 1100 XX Blackbird. Since the open only 120 HP (MOTORCYCLE measurement) strong 1000s could not keep up, due to sluggish sales, the production was stopped after the model year 2000.

Buy recommendation
Many of the well over 10,000 vehicles registered are more recent and are sold well over 4,000 euros. Older models (SC 21), on the other hand, are available from 1500
Euros and can be an interesting alternative with good maintenance despite high mileage. A SC 24 is particularly recommended,
Year of construction 1991 or 1992. For 3,000 euros copies with around 40,000 kilometers are offered. It is best to have a garage vehicle that is in full service, then hardly any stress is to be expected. With a little luck and maybe two or three hundred euros surcharge you will find it
even a SC 24 with dual CBS, built in 1993, in similarly good condition.

Tips
Put your suitcase on and the CBR is ready for your vacation. Great, if you already have a luggage system and possibly a spoiler screen from
JF Motorsport, phone 06002/910391, or MRA, phone 07663 / 9383-0. Trim parts should be examined for cracks. The chassis is inherently good. For a sporty pace, however, it is advisable to use progressive accessory fork springs with more viscous fork oil.

Model overview: Kawasaki ZZ-R 1100

Model history
For top athletes, only performance counts.
Seen that way, she was Kawasaki ZZ-R 1100
when it appeared in 1990, it was great. 147 HP, at that time countless motorcyclists first left their mouths open, then ran
the water in it together. “Want to have it!” In the arms race, the ZZ-R
with the then new, performance-enhancing one
Ram-Air-System was one step ahead and would hold the leadership position for years to come.
The years 1990 to 1992 were called Model C (type ZX1100-C1 to C3). There is little to criticize about the successor to the popular ZX-10, whose engine provided the basis for the ZZ-R. Only the two petrol lights ?? two, in case one of them burns out? flicker clearly too early and often give the driver an unfounded warning to stop fueling. After all, with a civilian driving style, due to moderate consumption and a large tank volume, stages of well over 400 kilometers can be rewound.
Kawasaki reacted and missed the ZZ-R 1100 when switching to the Model D (1993
until 1997: ZX1100-D1 to D5) a fuel gauge and a reserve tap. Further changes: modified frame, 180 mm instead of 170 mm rear tires and an enlarged silencer volume. The G-model from 1998 to the last year of construction 2001 (ZX1100-G1 to G4) received a digital clock in the cockpit, a longer overall translation and new cladding-
fastenings. The four-cylinder remained unchanged in the eleven years of construction, because it was fed up with power and it is also robust. He survived the 50,000 test kilometers of the high-speed riders of the MOTORRAD sister magazine PS without complaint. only camshafts and rocker arms showed slight signs of wear.
When driving on moderate country roads, load change reactions of the drive interfere, but the greatest strength of the ZZ-R 1100 lies in the freeway sprint, which can easily expand to a marathon distance. The overall concept fits: At that time, the Kawa was the only one in its class to come up with a sporty aluminum bridge frame. Aggressive design, a sufficiently sta-
Bile chassis and a comfortable seating position did the rest to make the ZZ-R 1100 the winner for almost a decade.

Buy recommendation
In the case of the older models, at first glance, the D version from 1993 onwards appears to be more attractive. However, these vehicles are sold at a comparatively high price and are usually well over 3000 euros. So either let the negotiating skills play or look for a well-maintained model with high mileage (over 60,000 kilometers). It is better, however, to focus on the lower-priced C3 model (built in 1992). With mileages between 30,000 and 40,000 kilometers in good original condition, this is offered much cheaper. It is ideal when expensive wear parts have already been replaced.

Tips
The shock absorbers in the rear wheel, which become obsolete after around 25,000 kilometers, are not exactly durable. The fork seals rarely last longer than 30,000 kilometers, so should
keep an eye on it when visiting. Progressively wound ones are good
Fork springs from the accessories trade, as the Kawasaki ZZ-R 1100 is tuned too soft at the front as standard. Further information and tips can be found on the Internet at www.zx10.de.

Drivers between 1.70 and 2.00 meters. In the open version, the powerful engine surprises even the spoiled speed freaks of today.

Model overview: Suzuki GSX 1100 F

Model history
The GSX 1100 F left the hunt for lap times to its big bike sister, the GSX-R 1100. She herself, on the other hand, was supposed to go to the sports tourism warehouse to attract customers. The start went wrong, however, because the first copies delivered in Germany in autumn 1987 suffered from considerable chassis problems. Suzuki responded promptly and gave the machine, internally known as the GV 72 C throughout the construction period, progressive fork springs and a new shock absorber in 1988. A year later, the frame was reinforced, and a 25 millimeter longer swing arm and a flatter steering head were supposed to ensure better straight-line stability.
Now the F could keep up. Not from a sporting point of view, but there was a lack of lean angle, the fork was still too soft and the brakes were poorly controlled. But for the standards of the time, it was able to score with modern tourers thanks to the facelift. The electrically adjustable screen may be dismissed as a gimmick by some, but in any case it provides good wind protection. In spite of the weight, an astonishingly light footedness, which is due to the tire dimensions, is positive. Even if these were no longer up-to-date at the beginning of the nineties: The combination of 16-inch models with a width of 120 millimeters at the front and 150 millimeters at the rear
Generates pleasantly little tendency to stand up when braking in an inclined position. However, some drivers complain that the motorcycle is wobbly in tight corners.
The engine remained beyond all doubt during the almost ten-year construction period of the F. With an open power rating of 136 hp, it was an attack on the autobahn and on country lane straights, and the GSX driver could easily blow off thoroughbred tourers. The 1100 was never a big seller, but it still successfully defended its raison d’etre. After the sale in 1997, a total of 4700 vehicles were registered, but the current inventory still contains around 4000 units.

Buy recommendation
At the time of going to press at www. mobile.de a Bavarian private seller his 1992 model: 38150 kilometers, first hand, long distance, summer garage vehicle, accident-free, tank bag, battery and brake pads new. 2350 euros, basis for negotiation. A test drive is definitely worth it. For around 500 euros more, two years younger models with a similar number of kilometers can be found on the watch. The Schwacke list
recommends for a 1995 model with approx
50,000 kilometers mileage 3120 euros as the sales price. Since the GSX 1100 F since 1990
technically remained largely unchanged, should
Second-hand buyers tend to pay more attention to the mileage, the general maintenance condition and useful extras such as a suitcase set and less to the year of manufacture of the vehicle.

Tips
Wear-prone clutch friction disks are a weak point. If the idle is difficult to find, the gears will crack during
The discs have to be replaced if the car is sluggish during a test drive or if the clutch slips in the last gear. Be careful if any suspicious noises (from a light click to heavy grinding) come from the cylinder head. This could be the result of a lack of oil in the valve train. An F (have the service booklet presented!) That is regularly serviced in the workshop will probably not be aware of these problems.

Model overview: Yamaha FJ 1200

Model history
Outwardly, the FJ 1200 cannot (and does not want to) hide its origins from the eighties. Its massive half-shell, a front spoiler, compared to the sleek yoghurt cup bikes from the early nineties, looks as stylish as a crochet sweater or pleated trousers. Anyway, the fairing offers excellent wind protection, and since fashionable customs tend to return as a retro look, the look of the Yamaha is quite acceptable again these days.
In any case, the predecessor FJ 1100 was right on trend in 1984, and not just in terms of its appearance. With a drilled out engine and a modified fairing, the 1200 was launched in 1986. Admittedly with few sporting ambitions, because customers didn’t want to roast around the corner with her as quickly as possible,
but travel as far as possible. The FJ, type 1XJ, still chauffeurs the kilometer collectors everywhere as long as the tires are rolling on asphalt. The seating comfort is second to none, but the chassis is too unstable when cornering quickly. Seems almost indestructible

However, the air-cooled four-cylinder leans
Strong vibrations in the medium speed range.
In 1988 the facelifted 3CW came along with a 17-inch instead of the antiquated 16-inch front wheel, digital ignition and four-piston brake calipers from the super sports car FZR 1000, and the superfluous anti-dive system on the fork was omitted. In the 3YA model from 1991 onwards, Yamaha mounted the engine and the passenger footrests in elastic rubber, which was not conducive to driving stability. The strut grew
Stroke from 40 to 48 millimeters, but Yamaha also changed the adjustment mechanism that was so practical up to now, so that the damping and spring base were now extremely difficult to adjust. Since the 3YA, the fork had to do without adjustment of the damping. The FJ 1200 has been available with ABS since 1991 for an extra charge. However, the buyer’s interest declined, in 1996, after ten years of construction, the last FJ 1200 rolled off the assembly line.

Touring with an express surcharge. The FJ 1200 is comparatively expensive, but it already has cult status. In this way, the neatly processed motorcycle will probably retain its value. Those who travel more often and only rarely want to speed are well served.
