Not necessarily sensible

Those who hesitate don’t need to read any further. The motorcycles presented here are not necessarily sensible and, above all, require a strong hand. But if you manage to curb it, you have fun. Even gigantic ones!

Thorsten Dentges

08/03/2015

Nothing against dainty machines, against super athletes trimmed for ultra-light, against chopped minimalist motorcycles or lively city fleas. They all have their place. But don’t speak to everyone. Some are more into the rustic, like the large format and love the wow! Effect. Or the feeling of being able to control a machine that seems irrepressible at first glance. Still others, as riders, are so equipped with their body size and circumference that too slim and small motorcycles simply do not look good on them. It often looks silly when a 1.90-meter giant folds up on a 190-kilo 600-meter.

Now it doesn’t have to be a machine from the Guinness Book of Records, there are interesting and recommendable models that are particularly large in almost every motorcycle category. We have selected a total of 19 machines in XXL format, which can easily be found on the used market. Not always superlatives, but each one is worth a test drive.

Honda Gold Wing

Honda

Honda Gold Wing

Compared to current luxury tourers, 118 hp seem a bit sparse at first. But 167 Newton meters of torque are a word, and in general: the size of the 1800s shows primarily through the mighty cladding with top wind protection, opulent seating for driver and pillion as well as a richly equipped cockpit that could compete with the Jumbo jet and Airbus 380. The Goldwing is a cult vehicle – not least because of the legendary reverse gear that you won’t find in conventional motorcycles. After all, weighing over 400 kilos, the load with its six-cylinder boxer engine and stiff aluminum bridge frame can be moved almost vibration and stress-free not only on dead straight highways (for which the motorcycle was originally designed), but is also suitable for winding country roads. Older GL 1800 (from 2001) often have over 100,000 kilometers on the clock. Signs that they were used for XXL trips.

Triumph Rocket III

Triumph Rocket III

Fat! Above all, the torque of 200 Newton meters is unrivaled. The Rocket III is impressive when it is in motion because you feel like the boss of the country road if you only indicate brief commands with the right hand throttle and thus propel the seven hundred pound motorcycle with elemental force. That is fun. Maneuvering is less fun, but the machine doesn’t want to ingratiate itself with little girls, it requires gripping male hands. Beginners are not well served with the three-cylinder mega-machine, especially in city traffic and on narrow, mountainous country roads, an experienced driver should do the trick. Although the stoppers with double discs and four-piston fixed calipers at the front and an eight millimeter thick disc at the rear are adequately dimensioned. The Triumph, which is technically sound, was first offered in 2004 for a good 19,000 euros and is now often available in the four-digit euro range used, rarely with more than 30,000 kilometers. The touring variant from 2008 with 108 hp, suitcases and a windshield is also of interest to travelers.

BMW K 1600 GT

BMW K 1600 GT

The fact that BMW also uses six cylinders for its touring flagship could be seen as an attack on Honda’s evergreen Goldwing. You could, but you don’t have to, although the K 1600 GT should certainly secure benefices for the Bavarians on its debut in 2011 on the American market, where Honda is strong. The performance of the seven-hundredweight bike is always fascinating: in around three seconds to 100, 250 peak, enormous 175 Newton meters of torque. In terms of fuel consumption, however, the machine is rather modest, and the braking distance is also extremely tight thanks to a well-functioning ABS of 38.6 meters. Surprising: As a supertourer, the 1600 is quite nimble, almost sporty.

Kawasaki VN 2000

Kawasaki

Kawasaki VN 2000

Here is not spilled, but padded! The “block” of Motor is indeed a real eye-catcher and certainly the main reason for many interested parties to specifically target this motorcycle. The key data of the largest production V2 are impressive: the block weighs 136 kilos, the cylinders have a stroke of 123 millimeters, and the monumental torque is 177 Newton meters at 3200 rpm. The two-liter cruiser offered from 2004 to 2010 is not available on every corner due to the small number of vehicles (only a few hundred registrations).

Honda Crosstourer

Second-hand advice on XXL bikes

Honda

Honda Crosstourer

The V4 engine replaced Honda’s less popular Varadero in 2012 and was to usher in a new era. However, the concept of combining a motorcycle designed for asphalt tours with a little adventure flair did not quite work. A bestseller is that Crosstourer at least not so far. For tall people over 1.85 meters, it is certainly a good alternative to the luxury VFR 1200 F touring bike – if you prefer to sit upright when traveling. The Crosstourer (tight 126 Newton meters of torque!) Really starts moving over 5000 rpm and then makes most of the other maxi travel enduros look old.

Moto Guzzi Stelvio NTX

Second-hand advice on XXL bikes

Moto Guzzi

Moto Guzzi Stelvio NTX

Ready for long-distance travel: ABS, traction control, engine protection bars, additional LED headlights, hand protectors, aluminum cases and luggage racks. The NTX, which has been available since 2009 (purchase tip: 2011 and later, because a modified 8V version) is all series. With this lavish equipment, the Guzzi weighs a fat 290 kilos. Oha. The terrain will end quickly. The sheer mass not only intimidates off-roaders, but also any viewer of this mighty vehicle when it is parked in front of the ice cream parlor. Just a look at the enormously thick manifold pipes, or just look at how wide and high the 35-liter tank is – who can safely master such a thing? In addition, the bassy, pithy sound of the air-cooled V2. NTX owners are then seized with pride when they are viewed as the conquerors of such a beast. But smiling quietly, they know that the well-balanced one is on the move Stelvio a very obedient philanthropist. Rare as used, but worth the search.

Suzuki DR Big

Suzuki DR Big

In the environment of other (more recent) off-road thick ships like a GS Adventure, the Suzuki looks almost petite and light as a feather. But it is also an XXL bike, because there is still no thicker series single cylinder. When it made its debut in 1988, it was still rolling towards Dakar under rally champion Gaston Rahier as a 750 cc, but as a competition machine it did not win a flower pot. In 1990 the “Big” became the 800, but only the revised type SR 43 B (one-piece 24-liter tank, two silencers, stronger brakes and more stable fork) from 1991 captured the hearts of many enduro globetrotters who loved the smooth running of the engine and the appreciated the comfortable chassis. The shirt-sleeved charm of this giant stew, which was built until 1999, is hard to resist today. The driver is enthroned above and enjoys big beats. Good, well-kept specimens can be found under 2000 euros.

BMW R 1150 GS Adventure

BMW R 1150 GS Adventure

If one speaks of a “fat cow” with this machine, it should not be taken disrespectfully. The BMW boxer machine was considered a milestone in the history of the touring enduro model, because it weighed almost 300 kilos due to the lavish equipment with suitcases, protective bars and other weighty attachments – and still passed as an off-road vehicle. Because world travelers like the Scottish actor Ewan McGregor or desert photographer Michael Martin and numerous less prominent motorcycle globetrotters have proven that this colossus with over 20 centimeters of suspension travel and plenty of ground clearance, similar to a Unimog or military truck, can get through anywhere. In the program from 2002 to 2005, there are now hardly any machines on offer with less than 30,000 kilometers.

BMW K 1300 R.

Jorg Kunstle

BMW K 1300 R.

Sporty naked bikes often have to appear as compact and filigree as possible as a figurehead. The BMW K 1300 R (since 2009) doesn’t give a damn about it and comes across as an edgy, heavy hum. Long stretched with a wheelbase of almost 1.60 meters and the stately weight of more than five hundred pounds with a full tank, the four-cylinder engine is not exactly a handling miracle, but when driving it conceals the pounds quite well. The optional ESA II electronic chassis supports brisk country road journeys at the push of a button on the handlebars, nine different settings are possible. Attention prospective buyers: without ESA, the resale value drops enormously! The characterful engine with a powerful 137 Newton meters of torque goes like Hulle, from zero to 200 in 7.9 seconds. That is very impressive!

Suzuki B-King

Second-hand advice on XXL bikes

Jorg Kunstle

Suzuki B-King

It looks wide and expansive, especially when you look at it from behind B-King approach. The massive rear with voluminous underseat rear silencers is impressive. It goes without saying that there is no little engine at work here, but rather a displacement giant. In fact, the 1300 in-line four produces 184 hp and pushes 146 Newton meters. A turbine-like engine like this one does not come across every day, but despite pressure-and-thrust orgies, the B-King does not come across as too brutal or aggressive when driving, is tame. The Suzuki runs as smoothly as cream, the translation is quite long, just like the wheelbase with 1525 millimeters – there is no risk of rollover when accelerating violently. Good motorcycle, but was only on the market from 2008 to 2012 and is now barely 2000 times in stock. The used offer is still quite good, around 7000 euros there are little-used treasures.

Ducati Diavel

Rossen Gargolov

Ducati Diavel

She is a little different from the playmates. But in which circle does she even play? Cruiser? Nope. Dragster, muscle bike, streetfighter? More likely, because it needs sporting challenges Diavel not to be afraid. Sprints to 200 in under ten seconds, which is hardly surprising given over 150 hp, 128 Newton meters of torque and a fighting weight on the level of sports touring. But the Ducati doesn’t really want to do club sport, is more of a loner. I prefer to look good and sound great – the motorcycle wins almost every prize in these disciplines. This makes it the first choice when you return to the city on the boulevard after a dynamic shore excursion. It arouses desire, is considered a luxury item – and costs a lot when used.

Yamaha MT-01

Jacek Bilski

Yamaha MT-01

The 3500 units sold from 2005 to 2012 Yamaha belongs to the kind of “misunderstood motorcycle”. Or, to put it more precisely: “A motorcycle that was understood (too) late”. After it was thrown out of the program, the demand for this used vehicle increased and the prices are now noticeably stable. At the time, she was perceived as a heavy athlete (at least 270 kilos!), But not considered to be an ultra-dynamic cruiser. However, once you’ve done a lap on it, you can hardly escape the rustic and somewhat coarse look. the MT-01 shakes a huge 100 Newton meters of torque from its almost 1700 cubic meters at just over 1000 rpm – extremely entertaining! Something like that goes down well with just-riders who don’t care about genres and who immediately understand this motorcycle: massive, but easy to control, classy, but not elegant. Simply a very nice motorcycle for great emotions.

Kawasaki ZZR 1400

Kawasaki

Kawasaki ZZR 1400

This motorcycle needs a clear path, i.e. ultra-wide roads and as little traffic as possible. German autobahns with no speed limit, on a Sunday morning on a dry day – under such circumstances you can ZZR 1400 more than just tickling. Because when the four-in-line really lets the pig out above 5000 rpm, it is a test of courage even for very experienced motorcyclists. But also an experience. In one breath to 100, a few seconds afterwards to 200, and then steer straight ahead to 300 km / h – that’s a thrill. Because the speed frenzy is only brief, and top performance in the speed bumpers segment will soon be topped by successors and competitors, such machines will probably lose their appeal more quickly – and prices will fall. In 2006, the 260 kilo speed bike was launched on the market for a good 14,000 euros; vehicles of the first series (in a visibly used condition) are now available for less than 5,000 euros. The equivalent then fits: The ZZR 1400 is very durable. The fun doesn’t go away quickly.

Great beginners

Most 125cc are light, petite and are small – so they are exactly the opposite of XXL. But there are machines with which even young motorcycle beginners can really show off.

MZ 125 SM

Second-hand advice on XXL bikes

manufacturer

MZ 125 SM

The water-cooled single-cylinder engine with two overhead camshafts and four valves delivers a real 15 hp. He is considered extremely reliable. MZ is dead, but the 125cc Supermoto will live on for a long time as a used car from 800 euros, especially since the supply of spare parts is not a problem. The SM was offered from 2000 to 2009 and is still well represented in the portfolio. Even cup races on asphalt / gravel circuits were held with it, no less sporty than the big ones.

Honda Varadero 125

Honda Varadero 125

Little Varadero is not small at all. Not as bulky as its big 1000 sister, but it looks almost as mature as a middle-class travel enduro. Even tall riders over 1.85 meters don’t look silly on the 125, and successful ergonomics and the best seating comfort enable long tours. Workmanship and reliability are excellent, mileage over 30,000 kilometers is no problem. the Varadero 125 (2000 to 2012) can be found in the advertisements from 1300 euros.

Hyosung GV 125

Second-hand advice on XXL bikes

manufacturer

Hyosung GV 125

As long as this 125cc is not next to really fat cruisers like one Kawasaki VN 2000 parks, it cleverly conceals its actual identity as a light motorcycle. The new Korean motorcycle costs a little over 3000 euros, but the second-hand GV 125 Classic, which was first introduced in 2007, is available from 800 euros. Lots of chrome, a decent V2 with 13.5 hp, front disc brake, comfortable driver’s seat (seat height: 665 mm) – the equivalent of this entry-level cruiser is great.

With maximum comfort

Scooters are considered uncomplicated and comfortable and are therefore often considered as a practical means of transport for the city. The maxi scooters shown here do more than that.

Aprilia SRV 850

Second-hand advice on XXL bikes

Aprilia

Aprilia SRV 850

We’re still waiting for a 1000 mega scooter, but this one Aprilia is already close. So far the most powerful and displacement series scooter with a full 76 hp, powerful acceleration (from 0 to 100 in 5.9 seconds) and a top speed of almost 200 km / h. Wow! Well, the part weighs an impressive 280 kilos with a full tank, but the stable chassis and gripping brakes keep the 16 and 15-inch bullet safely on course. The 850 with V2 engine has been in the range since 2012, ABS is optional, traction control has been available since 2013. The seating position: relaxed, but not too passive. Consumption is within a reasonable range of five liters per 100 kilometers. The new Aprilia, which costs around 11,000 euros, is available pre-owned from 6500 euros.

BMW C 600 Sport

Arnold Debus

BMW C 600 Sport

The GT version of the BMW C 600 (on the market since 2012) offers better comfort and, above all, more storage space on tours, but “Sport” is simply more popular. Probably because it looks sleeker and simply better. The same 60 hp parallel twin works in both versions, and the tubular steel frame cannot be disturbed even on brisk stretches of the motorway with a speed of 160 and faster. In the city, the BMW maxi scooter easily flattens luxury sedans from the same company at the traffic lights, which ensures good entertainment. It also beats almost any car when it comes to maintenance costs. In the 30,000-kilometer endurance test, MOTORRAD determined an average consumption of 5.2 liters / 100 km, and there were no expensive repairs. Without any loss of value, 14.8 cents per kilometer were incurred. The new BMW costs over 11,000 euros. Used: from 6000 euros.

Suzuki Burgman 650

Second-hand advice on XXL bikes

Suzuki

Suzuki Burgman 650

The Burgman 650 is almost a veteran among large scooters, after all, it has been on the market since 2002. 56 HP from 638 cubic meters, 160 peak, but also almost 280 kilos in weight. With these values, you can travel and touring very reasonably and stress-free, especially since the Burgman has plenty of storage space, shelves and a great windbreak. The driver sits back and relaxes and can either switch gear at the push of a button or leave this task to the automatic. It is stable on the road up to a travel speed of 130, after which it begins to oscillate slightly. The XXL equipment with ABS, on-board socket, handle and seat heating, electrically adjustable window and immobilizer is beyond any doubt. While Suzuki’s flagship scooter now costs five digits, used ones can be found from 2000 euros.
