Second-hand super sports car: Suzuki GSX-R 600

In the merciless arms race in the 600 super sport class, the little Gixxer has so far been able to assert herself well. Second-hand, it is even top-class.

Thorsten Dentges

It is well known that supersporters like to duel in a closed circuit, where you can let it rip. As the youngest and fittest 600 series at the time, the Suzuki could have bought off rivals such as the Honda CBR 600 or the Kawasaki ZX-6R right from its debut in 1997. But it doesn’t. Too lame on the slopes, too unevenly the power delivery, too uncomfortable for public road traffic, where, in contrast, many other super athletes turned out to be likeable country road sprinters. After the facelift in 1998, it could at least keep up on the racetrack, and after the renovation for 2001, the small GSX-R moved up the popularity scale in the wake of the extremely successful 1000 sister. A great guy with an engine (115 hp), top chassis – a real attack motorcycle.

The Suzuki technicians continued this clear line with further model updates GSX-R 600 even more manageable and stable (2004), missed their bearish brakes, an extremely sensitive, balanced chassis and 125 hp (2006). Amazingly, the GSX-R 600 impressed from 2008 with all-round qualities, although these should only be allowed in direct comparison with classmates. But of course, over the years the Suzuki has developed – and positively. However, the initial unsuccessfulness gave her a reputation as an eternal second, third or even fourth. Nevertheless: Even without many test victories, she was able to convince enough young supersport beginners who like to duel on the circuit – or at least dream of it when they are on the boulevard. Little Gixxer is just right for this.

sightseeing

The 600 feels right at home on the racetrack, and many owners actually pursue this call for competition. During the inspection and test drive, it is essential to look for damage from a fall and watch out for unusual running noises from the engine and gearbox! Also look under the full fairing to see if the engine is tight and no oil is leaking anywhere. Check the steering stop for damage, check the play of the rocker arm, deflection lever and wheel bearings and check whether the brake discs are still OK. If all points are okay, the previous owners probably did not put too much strain on the motorcycle and did all the maintenance work or, better still, had it done by a specialist workshop, because semi-skilled hobbyists should keep their hands off complicated high-tech four-cylinder engines and injection systems. Popular, except for the WVCE type because of the popular series exhaust: sporty silencers (for example Akrapovic, Leovince, Bos). Important for beginners: A subsequent 34 hp throttling costs around 250 euros.

Market situation

An enormous number of private sellers are trying their 600 Suzi. to sell, it is often a question of machines with few kilometers (up to 20,000), some of them first-hand, which are mostly younger than eight years. They should usually cost from 3500 euros, the bargain density is high here due to the large range. Even for well-maintained, no more than three-year-old models with less than 10,000 kilometers, private customers can hardly expect more than 6,000 euros, because in the price league around 5,000 euros, dealers often have better offers – including warranty. Older GSX-R 600s built up to 2000 with a few previous owners and many kilometers (more than 40,000) as well as clearly visible signs of use, but at least accident-free machines, can be found from 1,800 euros. Younger beginners with a sports penchant are looking for it. The likelihood of acquiring a rotten egg is, however, relatively high.
